Flotilla Holidays Sailing Vacations

Flotilla sailing vacations — colgate sailing adventures®.

Steve and Doris Colgate sailing near the coast of Yugoslavia in 1989, pioneers in flotilla sailing adventures.

Doris and Steve in Yugoslavia 1989

In 1972, Steve and Doris Colgate introduced “flotilla cruises” to the United States market. After leading more than 70 flotilla sailing cruises worldwide with Offshore Sailing School alumni participating, the Colgates started a program called Colgate Sailing Adventures®. They turned the flotilla cruise helm over to longtime cruising sailors Heather and Nate Atwater. Since 2016 the Atwaters have hosted and led most Colgate Sailing Adventures® flotilla sailing holiday cruises in Italy, Greece, Croatia, Thailand, the Seychelles, Tahiti, Bahamas, Belize, British Virgin Islands, and all over the Caribbean. Read diaries from previous flotillas on our Blog here .

Offshore Sailing School encourages everyone who loves to sail, especially those who have earned US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification, to purchase a cabin as a single or couple and join these hosted sailing trips. It is important to realize, however, that the boats you sail on are not cruise ships. There are no elevators, medical facilities, and captained launches that take you to shore and back. You will sail with others on 40′ to  50′ monohulls and catamarans that require a certain level of physical ability and the desire to participate in handling the boat. Check out our Flotilla Cruising FAQs , and note these points below:

  • Flotilla cruises are hands-on activities that require unaided mobility, getting on and off boats, dinghies, and docks.
  • All participants must complete a Sailing Resume before being confirmed for the trip.
  • A Skipper and Mate are assigned to each boat based on the completed Resumes. In certain countries, each Skipper must have the International Proficiency Certificate, which is easy to get if you have US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification. Learn more about the IPC here .
  • All participants are expected to trim sails, steer, anchor, dock, pick up moorings, cook, and clean up.

Everyone shares the fun and sailing on one of the best sailing holidays. In the evenings, stories and laughter abound as you relax under a canopy of stars while dining al fresco in the cockpit. Each morning your Cruise Leaders make the rounds to discuss the itinerary and navigation. On a Colgate Sailing Adventures® flotilla, all the boats follow the same route and rendezvous in an anchorage or harbor designated by the Cruise Leader that day.

  • Aegean Flotilla

Assisted Flotilla

Saronic islands, aegean.

Ocean Elements’ Aegean Flotilla will cruise the very best of the Saronic islands from our base at Nautica Bay Beach Club , Porto Heli, in the heart of the Greek Riviera. It’s a popular choice for two week Stay Sail holidays where you can relax and enjoy the hotel facilities in week one, before cruising the islands on your yacht for week two

We’ll stop at some of the best islands and ports in classical Greece to visit cultural hotspots, clear water bays and sandy beaches aplenty; and of course, we’ll be getting lots of great sailing in too. We offer two routes which offer a superb one week cruise or a two week, ‘complete Saronic’ cruise. The sailing is rated level 2-3 , so you’ll need to be a confident RYA Day Skipper to take part.

Assisted flotilla

Assisted Flotilla is much like a Classic Flotilla, but with a smaller group of 4-6 yachts. You have a very experienced skipper on one of the larger flotilla boats (like our Oceanis 51 ) who will accompany the cruise and be on hand if needed. We still cruise in company, have evening meals together, take care of the planning and (if you need) help you moor up at the end of each day.

It’s a less ‘full-on’ style of flotilla in terms of entertainment; and it suits more experienced skippers who like more freedom to change their itinerary. If you like a smaller group of sociable sailors, lovely cultured stopovers and a lead skipper to help you have a great week, then you’ll like our Saronic islands Assisted Flotilla.

Nafplion Route

Our Nafplion cruise will give you a taste of classical Greece as we visit cultural highpoints, like the caves at Franchthi, (the oldest human dwelling in the world); the ancient city of Nafplion with its intense Medieval atmosphere; and Kaparissi, dubbed one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of Greece’. You’ll have plenty of time to explore archaeological sites as well as the finest clear water bays and sandy beaches in the area; whilst getting lots of great sailing in too.

Hydra Route

Our Hydra cruise can be taken before or after our Nafplion route for a complete two-week tour of some of the best islands and cultural high points in the Argolic gulf.

For our Hydra route, we’ll visit places like the typically Greek Ermioni and the famous islands of Spetses and Hydra, both of which are rich in local art and cars are banned from Hydra - so donkeys rule the road.

Our Yacht fleet

Our Aegean holidays are available for a small and exclusive fleet of Bareboat cruising yachts, between 36 and 51 feet. They are also available for our luxury  skippered cruising yacht, the Ocean 51.1

Ionian flotilla holidays

Ionian flotilla holidays provide the first taste of flotilla sailing for many. The gentle sailing around islands like Lefkas, Ithaca and Meganisi is ideal for families and less experienced crews. For those wanting longer windier sailing, the Kefalonia flotillas take you into more open seas.

Easy Ionian Flotillas

Gaios: The pretty town square and quay

Many Ionian flotilla holidays start from the Lefkas area and head south around the islands. Ports vary from bustling holiday towns, to fishing villages where the few visitors almost all arrive by sea. From Corfu there are option to sail nort or south.

To sail your own yacht you need experience to ICC or RYA Day Skipper level. With some flotillas, there’s the option to gain a certificate during your holiday. The Ionian flotilla holidays can also be combined with a beach club holiday. In truth, I still think the Peloponnese flotillas are better for beginners. However the numbers going to the Ionian suggest I’m in a minority.

Kefalonia flotillas

These Ionian flotilla holidays reach as far south as the island of Zante. They’re aimed at those with some previous experience who want the Ionian charm but a bit more wind. It’s the same mix of small towns and villages but taking in some quieter less visited destinations.

Ionian flotilla choices

  • 1 Week Flotillas
  • 2 Week Flotillas

Take your pick from the following

About the Faraway flotilla

The 1 week Faraway flotilla explores the region north of Corfu. It’s an easy flotilla, an ideal introduction for the less experienced.

Base:Gouvia Easy Corfu
Flights from: Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle
Qualifications:to sail yourself: minimum ICC or RYA Coastal Skipper Practical
Other options: Skippers available.
Includes:Outboard (larger yachts), transfers
Extras:Outboard (smaller yachts), towels

The flotilla reaches up to Greece’s most northerly islands, the Diapontia Islands, which translates as the Faraways. Along the way you will visit bays, villages and towns on Corfu and the mainland.

It’s a good mix of tranquil anchorages and livelier stops. There are countless swimming opportunities and the chance to try some watersports. For the culture vultures there are monasteries and archaeological sites to visit.

The Faraway flotilla also offers a range of cuisine from traditionally Greek to Corfu’s top quality tourist fare and Kassiopi’s traditional English breakfasts!

More about the Ithaca flotilla

The flotilla sails from Sivota. Unusually, the flotilla starts on Sundays. This is to suit the UK charter flights.

The nearest airport is Preveza . Preveza is served by direct flights from Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester. The flotilla operator offers optional transfers between the airport and the yacht base.

The associated sailing school offers RYA recognised skippering and crewing courses. You can have an instructor on board your yacht, or you can share a Tuition Yacht with others.

The operator also has a Beach Club nearby; the Nikiana Beach Club . You can combine a week on flotilla with a week at the Club. The Club offers extensive dinghy and windsurf options. Paddleboards and kayaks are also available and equipment hire is free.

About The Kefalonia Flotilla

The Kefalonia flotilla explores the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca. It’s an intermediate level flotilla.

Efimia Easy Argostoli

First stop is the popular yachting hub of Vathi . Then it’s back to Kefalonia for a visit to Fiskardo. A stop at Assos gives the chance to take in the spectacular scenery of the less visited west coast. The peninsula there is almost an island. It’s held to the mainland by just a narrow isthmus.

Back to Ithaca, you’ll get to visit the sheltered bay at Port Polis. You will see it at its best once the day tripper boats have left.

Then you have a night to go where you will. There’s plenty of choice, including a chance to visit the south of Kefalonia.

The 1 week Paxos flotilla explores the area south of Corfu. It’s an easy flotilla, an ideal introduction for the less experienced.

The flotilla takes in a variety of towns and villages, both islands and on the mainland. There are plenty of beaches to enjoy and the opportunity to try some watersports. There are some good walks too.

You will visit ancient settlements and newer developments. Plataria dates from the 2nd century BC whilst Petriti is only about 50 year old. You’d be hard pushed to tell though – it looks much older.

The Paxos flotilla stops at some less visited places where traditional food will predominate. Elsewhere, you will find some anglicisation of menus – this is after all a popular tourist area.

About the Zante flotilla

The Zante flotilla is the most southerly Ionian flotilla. It runs down to the popular holiday island, returning via the Peloponnese mainland.

As well as visiting Zante Town itself, the flotilla stops at Agios Nikolaos . This little fishing village is in stark contrast to the bustle of Zante. There’s also the chance to call in at the scenic Shipwreck Bay.

There’s also the chance to visit the towns of Poros and Sami. From Sami, you can visit the Melissani and Drogarati caves. If you prefer somewhere quieter, the long beach at Kato Kastelios is sparsely populated and a great place to relax.

It’s a good mix of tranquil villages and livelier stops. There are countless swimming opportunities and the chance to try some watersports. For the culture vultures there are monasteries and archaeological sites to visit.

Sailing Holidays in Greece

Experience the magic of sailing in the Ionian Islands on your sailing holidays in Greece. The Ionian Sea, with its roots in Greek mythology and its border with Albania to the north, welcomes you to explore its fantastic beaches and picturesque ports and marinas.

The Ionian Islands, including Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos, create an ideal backdrop for your sailing adventure. This “other Greece” offers a unique charm, distinct from the Aegean islands, running parallel to the western Greek mainland coast.

For those who are seeking to charter a sailing yacht in Greece, the Ionian Sea is a true gem. With fairways shielded from strong winds and numerous secluded anchorages, some accessible only by yacht, it’s not just a haven for classic bareboat yacht charters but also a perfect destination for flotilla holidays. Whether you’re a novice, a family with children, or an experienced sailor, the Ionian Sea promises a memorable experience.

Our fabulous route for summer 2024

Our routes are 1 week long itineraries and explore the beautiful central and southern Ionian islands from our yacht base in Kefalonia.

Our yacht fleet and prices are the same for both itineraries, and both have minimal mooring fees along the way  (10-20 euros per week).

Sheltered line-of-sight sailing and an easy itinerary with short island-hopping distances make this cruising area perfect for those looking for a less demanding sailing holiday. An abundance of stunningly clear water inlets, protected bays to anchor in and quaint harbour towns to explore.

About the local area

Kefalonia is one of a group of islands on the western side of Greece in the Ionian Sea. It is the largest of the Ionian islands and boasts the third-highest mountain range in Greece. Parts of the island are now national parks, home to wild horses, golden eagles and other protected flora and fauna.

Arrival Day

  • Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base in SAMI is about 1 hour. Our yachts are ready for boarding at 3pm on arrival day. Our team will be on the quayside to meet you. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town you’ll be left to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. Everything begins the next morning at about 10am.

Yachts anchored in the Ionian near Fiscardo

Day 1 (12NM):

  • We’re northbound with a short hop up the strait between Kefalonia and Ithaca. It’s the first day on the water and we spend time practising mooring techniques and boat familiarisation.
  • Our destination is Polis Bay , a stunning, secluded bay on the North West corner of Ithaca. After mooring up on long lines, there’s a walk to the nearby taverna and some stunning views of the bay.

Yachts moored on the quay in the Greek harbour

Day 2 (12NM):

  • We continue North and sail up to Sivota on the south-east coast of Lefkas island. Verdant hillsides join seamlessly with rocky coves and sandy bays to create a picture postcard setting. The harbour is beautiful, with a small flotilla of colourful local fishing boats found lining the shore. Shops, tavernas, cafes and mini markets are all close by.

Aerial view of yachts on the quay in Kalamos

Day 3 (16nm):

  • Kalamos is probably our favourite little place in the Ionian. Honestly, time has stood still here. An abundance of bays to anchor in along the way, perfect for snorkelling and exploring. Stern to on the quay if there’s space, if not a long line ashore. Grab a beer and watch the yachts coming in with the brilliant harbour master “George” taking charge!

Small harbor in the Greek Ionian islands

Day 4 (14nm):

  • A really easy day today. A short sail around Kalamos and then head North West, towards the captivating little harbour of Vathi on Meganisi island . Pastel-coloured houses huddle on the clifftop overlooking the deep blue bay below – where you happen to be moored up. Wander around the old harbour and village and discover another world and some brilliant tavernas. Great swimming, great food and quite simply heaven on earth. You’ll never want to leave here.

Busy harbour in Greece

Day 5 (24nm):

  • We head South today, sailing from one Vathi to another: Vathi Ithaca – the home of Odysseus in Greek mythology. Once in Vathi, there is plenty to see with a gorgeous harbourfront area to explore.

Kefalonia island harbour of Sami

Day 6 (18nm):

  • The last leg of our flotilla today as we return back to Sami with a nice easy run past the southern tip of Ithaca. If there is time on route, Antisamos beach is well worth a stop.
  • Check out is by 10am the following morning. Our local team can assist with arranging onward travel.

Qualifications required

What qualifications do i need.

To charter a yacht in Greece as part of a flotilla or independently you will need a qualified skipper on board, and a competent crew member.  The ICC  ( International Certificate of Competence ) is probably the best ticket to have as it is widely recognised by the authorities here on the islands. This, or the  Day Skipper  practical certificates are the minimum required.

Feeling a bit rusty?

Many of our guests sometimes feel their skills aren’t quite ship-shape when they arrive for their flotilla holiday. After the morning briefing on day 1, there is the opportunity to practise your mooring skills under the guidance of our brilliant crew.

Skipper on Board

If you think you would like some further assistance for your first day of sailing, then an instructor can join you on board for the day and help you ease into the sailing.

Skipper on board is £165 per yacht  (subject to staff availability)

Experience the Sailing… and the food!

You’ll experience some amazing Greek food whilst on a flotilla, from classic Greek kitchen dishes cooked by local chefs, seasonal salads, mind-blowing tomatoes and freshly grilled sardines, pork chops and club sandwiches – the food in Kefalonia and the other Ionian Islands on a flotilla holiday is delicious and very reasonably priced.

yacht flotilla holidays

When it comes to wine, there are 48 varieties of grape grown locally and some very fine internationally recognised wines to try, along with some fantastic Hellenic beers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

Wander along from your mooring and you’ll be sure to find coffee and fresh pastries for breakfast, plus pop into one of the great little mini-markets to stock up your yacht fridge for some lunchtime treats on anchor somewhere.

Both our yacht bases in Sami and in Lixouri have an excellent selection of mini-markets, bakeries and other shops available for buying provisions at the start of your flotilla week. If you happen to be in Lixouri, be sure to pay a visit to I-Scream Ice cream parlour on the left-hand side of the town square – you won’t be disappointed!

Evening Meals

Part of the joy of Flotilla Sailing is sitting down to a Greek feast at the end of a fantastic day of sailing. For the first evening, we arrange a group meal at a local restaurant  (not included in the holiday price)  and then for the rest of the evenings, the choice is yours.

Whether you’re moored at anchor and rowing to shore to a beachside taverna or simply stepping onto the harbourside, your Flotilla Skipper and 1st Mate will let you know the best options for where to eat. In the busier harbours, there’ll be many fantastic options to choose from. In the quieter locations, it might be just one or two.

For some of our harbour stops, there will be the option of a complimentary mooring for dining in a particular restaurant, but you are still free to eat where you like!

In the local area

Here are some options to check out in the local area:

  • A sunset meal at one of the best beaches in the Greek islands is also a must. Petani beach and taverna “Erasmia“. Only a 15 – 20 minute taxi ride from the club this place is incredible – get there early for a swim and settle down for a wonderful eating experience.
  • Head into town and Lixouri square, 5 – 10 minutes in a taxi from the club (1 taxi for 4 people is ~€10 one way). A wonderful place to watch the world go by with countless cafes, tavernas and bars. Whatever you do, don’t miss the best ice cream in the world at “I-Scream” – it’s divine and we love it!

Getting there

Our yacht base in Sami is quick and easy to get to, with a reasonable flight time of 3hrs from the UK and many regional departure airport options direct to Kefalonia airport. The transfer is approximately 70 minutes.

Thursday changeover day

Transfers are not included but can be easily arranged via our website. Bookings are made with our recommended transfer partner, Kefalonia Taxi Transfers.

On arrival in Kefalonia airport make your way to the arrivals gate exit and your pre-booked taxi will be there ready and waiting for you. It’s a 60 minute journey to flotilla base in Sami.

Drop us a line if you can’t find your answer…

What qualifications do we need to be able to go on Flotilla?

We require a minimum IYT Flotilla Skipper, RYA Day Skipper Practical, or an (ICC) or equivalent experience as skipper of a similar size boat in tidal or non-tidal waters. If you have never sailed in the Med before we strongly recommend our refresher course (staff availability dependent) to go over specific harbour and mooring techniques used here or take our ICC test out here in Greece.

Where does the flotilla depart from and return to?

For 2021, our flotillas are operating from SAMI, Kefalonia which is on the eastern side of the island. Sami is a great little harbour with a beach just over the harbour wall from where your yacht will be moored. In town there are also plenty of tavernas and restaurants as well as supermarkets for getting provisions

Previously our yacht base was up the coast in Ag. Efimia, however a number of factors led us to switch locations for 2021

What extra costs are there when we are out in Greece?

Flights to and from the UK, transfers, and personal expenditure.

The following must be paid in Greece:

  • (For yachts 38 foot or under) Non refundable damage waiver of £99 per yacht per week paid as part of you final balance
  • (For yachts over 38 foot) a £2,000 / 2,330€ Yacht Security Deposit per yacht
  • Fuel used (approx 70€ euros per week),
  • Mooring fees (approx 30€)

There is also the option of adding a skipper on board (If available) for £165 per day)

What is the deposit/damage waiver for?

For yachts 38 foot or under on flotilla:

There is a non-refundable damage waiver of £99 per yacht per week. This helps cover the excess premium that we take out with our marine insurance company and means that you are not liable for any big bill at the end of the week. The waiver is payable as part of your final balance.

For yachts over 38 foot on Flotilla:

There is a refundable security deposit of £2,000 which is to cover any loss or damage to the yacht whilst under charter. It covers the excess premium that we have by our marine insurance companies. This can be paid by credit card.

For All Charter Yachts:

There is a refundable security deposit of £2,500 which is to cover any loss or damage to the yacht whilst under charter. It covers the excess premium that we have by our marine insurance companies. This can be paid by credit card.

How much does it cost to moor each night?

Not a lot. Only Sami (on Kefalonia) uses a tariff system that can cost approx 8-10 euros a night. Other places are normally only a few euros if anything.

How much is yacht fuel each week?

We charge fuel at the pump rate when re filling at the end of the charter. This has varied dramatically over the last few years and is approximately €1.5 per litre.

Do you supply charts and pilot books etc?

Yes, we supply the relevant charts and local pilot books for you. However, many guests bring their own as a keep sake. (Ours tend to get dropped in the water 100s of times.)

What about yacht cleaning at the end of the week, bed linen and towels?

Yacht cleaning is included in the holiday price, along with yacht linen. We do not provide towels.

Is there a hairdryer on board?

There are no hairdryers on any of our yachts, so you will need to bring your own. Please note that you will only able to use your hairdryer when it is plugged into a mains socket in a building. The shore power connection for our yachts is normally low voltage, so a high power item like a hairdryer can blow the fuses for the entire pontoon!

How much is the transfer to the yacht base in Sami?

Taxi prices can be found on our  Transfer Booking Page.

How many people can a taxi take?

All taxis are licensed for 4 passengers,  no exceptions . For larger parties, you will need to take either 2 taxis or a small minibus.

We are doing a 2 week flotilla Holiday. What happens on change over day?

You will return to Sami with the flotilla for two nights, with the Thursday spent all day in port. A great chance to explore Sami and the surrounding areas or somewhere else on Kefalonia.

Enjoy a UK Flotilla Sailing Holiday

Why choose a uk flotilla sailing holiday.

Sunsail’s UK sailing flotilla breaks are perfect for experienced sailors or novice sailors, perhaps seeking the next step up from your day skipper course. With the security of a lead boat on hand, they are a fun and safe way to gain some sailing miles, experience different types of location and build confidence as you navigate along the UK’s stunning south coast.

Everyone can enjoy some stress free sailing in good company, without the hassle of airplanes, flights or disrupted travel plans.

How does a UK flotilla work?

Each day there's an itinerary for all the flotilla yachts and a daily briefing for everyone with our lead skipper and host.

The briefing is an opportunity to discuss the navigation plan for the day so that you’re really confident and happy. However, sailing with the flotilla is totally flexible. You choose whether to sail in company or venture off on your own  towards the days final destination. It is very much a personal choice.

Equally, there’s no requirement to join in the social elements of the flotilla but a pontoon party is always great fun! And it’s great to share your experiences at the end of the day: reliving the thrill of a perfect sail or the sighting (if you’re lucky) of dolphins and seals.

Even the most experienced sailors can sometimes worry about bringing the boat into the marina at the end of the day. Arrive knowing your lead skipper will be there before you to take your lines and help you in. And, if you don’t feel quite ready to take charge of the yacht, remember we can provide a skipper or an instructor for all or part of your holiday.

Our Sunsail 41.0 flotilla yachts

You’ll be chartering one of our stunning Jeanneau Sunsail 41.0 yachts . Roomy and beautifully appointed, each boat has three cabins and can sleep up to 9 people. Perfect for a family sailing adventure or for a group of friends.

Our boats have a spacious cockpit with an easily accessible swim platform for launching a paddle board or diving in for a relaxing swim. These are handy for mooring stern-to in the marina as well and make stepping aboard easy.

Cruising area

You will cruise around the Solent and enjoy places of really unexpected beauty. Highlights might include anchoring in Newtown Creek with its colony of seals and population of sea eagles. Or sailing past Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyards with a close up view of warships old and new.

Beaulieu is another hidden gem buried in the New Forest, with a delightful pub and access to the famous motor museum if you want to spend some hours ashore. Cowes, Yarmouth and Lymington are some of yachting's finest destinations and each one is different. There’s no thrill like arriving in a town from the sea!

Typical flotilla itinerary:

Arrive at Port Solent Marina the night before to collect your yacht. You'll receive a thorough handover from our Prometheus Sailing base staff and be introduced to the other members of the flotilla. Following an overnight stay at the marina on board your yacht, the group will set sail in the morning to Cowes.

Please Note:

  • this itinerary is subject to changes
  • day sailing times and distances are a guide only, based on average routes and wind speeds
  • these are subject to actual course sailed, weather and tides on the day

Portsmouth (Port Solent) to Cowes

Approx 11 Nautical miles  2.5 hr Sailing time *

Not too many miles to cover on the first day sailing to Cowes Harbour.

Stop for a swim at Osborne Bay with its well known ice cream boat. Or a sail round one of the three Napoleonic forts in eastern Solent.

The flotilla will head into Cowes to stay for the night. This legendary home to the yacht sailing has many excellent eateries and watering holes.

All our flotilla guests will also get to enjoy a special Mermaid Gin & Tonic drinks party on the pontoons in Cowes Yacht Haven.

For celebrity spotters it’s always worth trying to catch a glimpse of a famous sailor or two…

Cowes to Lymington

10 Nautical miles 2 hrs Sailing time *

Day 2 starts with the group meeting for the daily yacht briefing held by the lead crew, before setting sail to Lymington. There are lovely places to explore on the way – Newtown, Beaulieu and Alum Bay are all possible lunch and swim stops.

Lymington Yacht Haven itself has won many awards and the shower facilities are spoken of by the sailing community in hushed and reverent tones. The Haven Bar is charming and friendly and you can easily spend a very happy evening without straying far from the yacht. This would be a shame, though, as Lymington Town is delightful and the Town Quay is a great place to sit and watch the world.

Lymington to Southampton

20 Nautical miles 4 hrs Sailing time *

Day 3 heads to the hustle and bustle of Ocean Village Marina in Southampton.

A 4 hour sail across the Solent and up Southampton Water will allow you some fantastic sailing time.

You will moor up in the stunning Ocean Village Marina, surrounded by 5 star hotels, thriving bars and a wide range of restaurants.

Why not visit the amazing HarBAR on the 6th floor of the 5 star Southampton Harbour Hotel. Enjoy sky-high chilled-out vibes in this atmospheric rooftop bar and lounge. Featuring panoramic views across the Solent and the bustling marina below, it’s the place to be and be seen, cocktail in hand and enjoying amazing dishes and sharing plates with friends.

Southampton to Yarmouth

After the daily briefing day 4 is a sail back across the Solent to the beautiful seaside town of Yarmouth.

The busy harbour bustles with ferries and the lifeboat. Many sailors stop here before leaving for France or further afield and it is often the first port of call on return. The cheerful harbour staff are on hand in their boats to guide you into the right berth. This pretty town has several excellent bars and restaurants. Treat yourselves to supper at The George or the funky Salty's Bar .

There's some lovely walks round some of the Isle of Wight’s most beautiful coastline or across to Freshwater Bay. There always seems to be spectacular sunsets and sunrises at Yarmouth. It's worth getting up to enjoy the dawn.

Yarmouth to Portsmouth (Port Solent)

Today the fleet has a lovely voyage back east before heading up to Port Solent Marina.

With five day’s experience and confidence behind you, it's a chance to really enjoy Portsmouth’s legendary naval history as you sail through the harbour. Passing the spectacular Spinnaker Tower and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard .

Up at Portchester Lake there is an astounding view of Portchester Castle with its Norman Keep. This English Heritage gem has been home to a fort of some sort since about 268BC. The history associated with it is well worth a read.

You’ll arrive back in plenty of time to sit back, relax and take in the many shops and restaurants located on the Port Solent Marina boardwalk.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Ionian Flotilla in Greece

Lighter winds and shorter passages make the Ionian ideal for a relaxed flotilla sailing holiday in Greece, popular with families and less experienced crews.

Explore these beautiful Greek islands and experience gentle afternoon breezes, warm seas and friendly harbour-front tavernas. This flotilla is ideal for couples and families with children seeking a relaxed sailing holiday.

The sheltered waters of the Ionian offer an unlimited number of tranquil bays and enchanting fishing harbours. Navigation is straightforward with no tides, currents or other hazards. There are good sailing breezes late morning through the afternoon, but winds rarely exceed Force 5. Anchor in picturesque bays or moor up in bustling fishing harbours.

We don't believe in 'regimented' flotilla sailing. You're free to plot your own course during the day. The flotilla skipper is on hand to give you advice and support - from sorting out a snarled anchor to reserving you a table for dinner on the quayside.

Less experienced skippers will appreciate his help with mooring "stern-to" or "bows-to" on the quayside at the end of an enjoyable afternoon's sail. And if you are an experienced sailor you can choose to leave the flotilla for a few days, joining up for the barbecue evening or other social event.

Those new to sailing or looking to brush up on their skills can take advantage of our  learn to sail on flotilla  option. Ask the sales team for more details.
