Boom tent great product..

Posted by Unknown on 19th Dec 2022

I got the 6' x 9.5' for my 21' boat. I got the UV resistant material I had it up while i was working on the cockpit and what a difference. I was cool and relaxed usually the sun beats down on me and gives me a headache even with a cap and screen. this time I had no cap and was great. The material, stitching, and grommets are top notch. There are grommets all the way around so you can switch the L and W to better suite you needs.

Exactly What I Needed

Posted by John Harkness S/V Moondance on 6th Dec 2021

I ordered the large boom tent for my C&C 110 to help keep my dodger and cockpit area clean and dry. I just cannot bring myself to put a plastic tarp on my boat! Lee Sail Covers delivered the boom tent very quickly (in a time when everything is backed up) and it was exactly what I needed. The quality exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Lee Sail Covers to anyone looking for canvass for their boats. Thank You Lee Sail Covers!!

Our Original Boom-Tent Sailboat Winter Cover

As one of the premiere designers of the Boom Tent Sailboat Winter Cover we have spent a great deal of time upgrading and perfecting our present-day product. We protect your sailboat, its precious wood toe rail, and the Awlgrip / Painted Hull, or teak decks from the elements be it tropical UV damage to harsh snow & ice accumulation and wind. Protect your investment with a custom made winter cover.

About our Sailboat Winter Covers

In brief, Leon Canvas Inc is designed for mast-up winter storage. It can either cover your sailboat down from the boom to inside the toe rail OR over the toe rail by 6-8 inches. Based on your geographic location and how you winter your boat (in water or on land) we have the perfect solution for you.

We use nothing but the best and toughest materials. We use "Top Gun" fabric, a marine-grade polyester woven fabric with a rubberized finish. This fabric is entirely water resistant but our cover design is NOT air-tight so the shrink-wrap-moldy-swamp-effect come spring-time is not an issue.

For ease of installation, this cover comes in 3 sections. The forward section gets securely tied to the bow and terminates at the mast creating the perfect pitch for liquids to sheer right off. The "Mid-Section" has a mast collar not unlike a main sail cover. This middle section extends to and terminates somewhere mid-boom where the zippers align with your life line gates for easy access port and starboard. Additionally, in the third and aft section, we provide a stern access zipper from topping lift to transom for easy aft entry. Whether you just cover your boat to inside the toe rail or over, we have collared cutouts for all your boat's shrouds, and stays. Every cover is a custom-made cover and we will work with you to accommodate your boat's variances be it davits, radar poles or ladders etc.

Product Description

The Capri 14.2 boom tent was designed at our sail loft in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Our Capri 14.2 boom tent cover is equipped with bungee and hooks attached along the edges to hook securely to your rub rail. The boom tent style cover is used for a variety of reasons, one of which is to keep water out and sun off of the boat. Our boom tent has a mast collar that ties and three twist snaps that run down the front of the mast as well as a #2 spur grommet to secure the aft section of the cover to the boom. We also use 12 aluminum hooks coated in Plastisol to protect the gunwales and secure the boom tent to your boat.

We offer this cover in three different fabric types, look over the fabrics in the drop down chart below.

Tecsew Boom Tents are an effective way of offering Cockpit protection when in the harbour. Our Boom Tents can be bespoke or more conventional designs.

Windows (perhaps with blinds and access zips) can be incorporated to increase the functionality of your Boom Tent.

The rear can be left open, or closed. It can extend to cover the back of the  Sprayhood , the hatch or all the way forward to the mast.

If your Boom does not extend far enough back into the Cockpit, we can design your Tent to extend further aft to the backstay, or a line tied between twin backstays.

If you have a  Stackpack , we can usually develop a design that secures either under the Boom or alternatively, zips to the sides.

If you do not find inspiration from the pictures below, then please look at our  Deck Covers  for more ideas. These can fully cover the decks and because they are usually manufactured in three zip together sections, the middle and aft section can be used independently as a Boom Tent.

Boom tent what to look for?

sailboat boom tent covers

I tried a light colored mesh shade. It did not provide enough shade for summer conditions on the Chesapeake. I've had better success with sunbrella that just reaches over the top lifeline.

Use the cheap tarps to learn how to maximize for your use. Sissors, duct tape, tape measure, twine Get creative, think it out Might want a 100d sun shade thats cut different than a 600d rain awning...etc Then make some good ones

That is what I just did. I had a winter cover tarp that i had cut up to try to fit the mast up situation of storage. It was pretty ragged, so I squared it up as best as possible and used double sided tape and a grommet tool. Eventually i will likely end up with a sunbrella something but it is too expensive to work with until I get back into sewing and know I can make it nice enough to work with such expensive material. Some interesting designs from Sailrite. It would save in material and storage. For now waiting on better skills before I cut expensive fabrics.

I have a tent - awning which is big rectangle of Sunbrella with grommets at the 4 corners and mid way on each side. I don't recall the dimensions but it's probably 10' x 10' or so. I rig it as follows: center grommet on the forward end gets the halyard clipped to it. The aft center grommet is clipped with a carbine to the backstay (it has a block so it doesn't slide down. 4 corners have light lines tied to the grommets which are tied to the life lines at a stanchion or the pushpit. I also have a long line in the forward center grommet to tie to the mast to put tension in the top of the inverted V. Simple... it works... easy to deploy and stow. Keeps the cabin 10° cooler and cockpit dry and sun off when we are in the cockpit at anchor.

Spend some time with your mock up and imagine all that will affect it..and what it will affect You can find good dwr polyester fabric for 1/4th the cost of branded sunbrella...and last many years Rarely is the first design your final keeper

sailboat boom tent covers

On our last boat we started with a blue tarp that went the length of our boom, and was wider than the beam of the cockpit. We used lengths of 3/4" pvc pipe as ribs to make an "African queen" (old guy reference) style cover that projected straight out the sides. The end of each rib was tied to the lifelines. It provided great shade while still being open and airy. If the weather took a turn all you had to do was cinch down the ties. That would bend the pvc ribs into a curved arch, making more of a "chuckwagon" (another old guy reference!) cover that withstood wind and rain pretty well. I cut the pvc pipes in half, and then re connected them using couplers. That way the whole thing could be folded in half and rolled up on the half length pipe pieces making a tidy bundle. Once we refined the design we made version 2.0 out of a generic sunbrella knockoff fabric. We got a lot of use out of that setup in all weather for many years. Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk

If you are at anchor, and you tie the tarp a little higher at the mast, you will have a little more room below, and it will create a funnel shape. The wind accelerates a little going through. Without setting a lot of rigging, the boom tents tend to be a little cramped at the sides. You can create a simple rectangle tent with two poles that are about as long as your boat is wide. Sew a sleeve into each end for the poles. The poles will keep the tarp up high at the edges to give you more headroom, and let more breeze through. These are available commercially, too.

You can use tubular webbing to create pockets Personally, i would use a low stretch fabric...and pull it tight tight

That is a good idea for the tubular webbing I even have some on hand. Just got to figure out the right glue for it. For now I am using a tarp because it is white, free and on hand. My order of zippers arrived today from a July 18th order. The primary purpose is for sun but on the version 1's maiden voyage we were stuck in the boatyard during a thunderstorm. It was awesome to finish the days work with a beer in hand watching the storm while sitting dry. If the final product is not fully waterproof I will have to have at least one for this purpose.

If you are going to make the final version out of sunbrella, you will want to sew it. It would only take a few minutes to sew pockets into a test tarp (although it takes me a long time to remember how the sewing machine works). Any regular sewing machine should be able to handle a few layers of this fabric. If you have other projects, you may want to look into a more robust machine.

For a trial you can simply knot the webbing on both sides of a grommet As long as the pole is inside the webbing pocket you can set any angle desired. Guyline to grommet

Not to familiar with J24 I raced on their speed models 70, 105, 111, 120. The phrf are pretty low. ( 50-100) The J24 is around 164. Your S 7.9 at 167 would be a good match. Here in Annapolis that would not qualify as a racer. But perfect for where you sail. It’s fun racing a similarly rated boat. P Haleakula at phrf 127 and the S2 9.1 at 132 are pretty equally matched. I have retired our C&C 35 MKIII racing. she is adorned with davits, dinghy, Radar pole and has been the cruiser side of the racer cruiser for 10 years now. we see always somewhat competitive with the J because of our centerboard, but they are truly racers. The dodger and bimini never slowed us down and was always present. The side panels which make full enclosures are only used occasionally, mainly in foul weather. They were designed to zip into the bimini in 3 minutes. Essentially we designed all panels including the front strata glass on the dodger to zip out so we are left with wide open ventilation and two bimini. Without them you die in the sun and heat in July and August here.
