Cruising Australia: Everything you need to know about sailing Down Under

From stunning coastal routes to unmissable sailing events, Janneke Kuysters shares her top tips for cruising Australia

“It doesn’t matter where you choose, you can’t go wrong in Australia. There are so many wonderful cruising grounds,” says Hank Rosendal, a Dutch-Australian sailor. His Amel 53 Tempest is currently moored in Albany, West-Australia. And he’s right: you could sail a lifetime around Australian shores and still not see everything.

So for a foreign cruiser there is a difficult choice: how much time do you want to spend in Australia and what can you do and see? Classically, on a trip around the world , cruisers sail from the islands of the South Pacific to New Zealand for the cyclone season: a tough crossing but with the rich rewards of New Zealand hospitality and boat maintenance facilities.

From New Zealand many go back north to Vanuatu or New Caledonia and then on to the Indian Ocean. For those a short pitstop in Australia in either Cairns, Thursday Island or Darwin is logical. Visits to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef will add the wonderful experience of tropical Australia.

Australia is a vast country: don’t underestimate the distances you’ll sail. From Bundaberg to Sydney is a little under 500 miles; add 628 miles for the trip from Sydney to Hobart. If you go from Hobart to Perth across the Bight, you’ll be adding another 2,250 miles.

East coast cruising

But in the past decade more and more cruisers have viewed Australia as a destination in itself. And that opens up a whole new perspective. The tough 1,000-plus miles crossing from the Pacific Islands to New Zealand is no longer necessary – a downwind cruise of around 700 miles from New Caledonia to the east coast of Australia is much more comfortable.

The boat can be safely left in Australia while you fly home, or you can keep sailing. The most important thing to consider is to stay below 30°S; the official cyclone belt lies to the north of this latitude. Instead of having to wait for the cyclones to pass, cruisers can sail on and explore Australian waters.

There are myriad choices to make depending on the distances you are willing to cover. Two popular options are to make landfall near Brisbane in Queensland and sail south to Sydney and back, or to continue sailing to Tasmania .

South African cruiser Brent Grimbeek has chosen this second option: “I love the diversity that the Australian east coast has to offer. Most of the distances between ports are short, so we daysailed our Lagoon 44 Impi from port to port. Crossing Bass Strait is always a challenge, but the effort is richly rewarded by the stunning nature and landscapes of Tasmania.”

His wife Ana adds: “There is the annual Go West rally between New Caledonia and Australia. Although we have made this crossing a few times now, we enjoy participating in the rally: it makes entry into Australia easier and it is fun to meet like-minded people.”

British solo sailor Thom D’Arcy sailed his Vancouver 28 Fathom along the east coast from Bundaberg to Sydney and back up north, all the way to Darwin. “I’m very pleased I took Fathom to Sydney. The sense of achievement on entering such an iconic port is fantastic.”

For those with a taste for speed and endurance, sailing south along the east coast of Australia can be ‘spiced up’ by entering the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race . Paul Billingham, Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia explains: “We encourage foreign yachts to participate in ‘the Hobart’ as part of their trip around the world and extend all the necessary help and support to make it happen for them.”

There is also a lesser used track to cruise around the south of Australia and up the west coast. After studying the weather patterns closely, we saw that the tough westward crossing of the Great Australian Bight is feasible in the summer months of February and March.

A succession of high-pressure systems chases the prevailing south-westerly winds away and makes for periods of four to seven days of nice easterly winds. A cruise ‘along the bottom’ of Australia not only gives the opportunity to visit Tasmania’s lesser known cruising areas on the wild west coast, but also puts cities such as Adelaide within reach.

Bruce Roach, Commodore of the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron, says they welcome visiting cruisers. “The south coast of Australia is a very rewarding cruising ground, from Adelaide to the natural beauty of the Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf with its many anchorages,” he adds.

During our cruise around the south of Australia we experienced this warm hospitality first-hand: the generosity of the Australians to visiting yachts is one of the rewards of sailing off the beaten track in such a vast country. Once across the Bight, Western Australia offers a whole new cruising experience. Long reefs stretch along the coast, so careful navigation is needed.

Cities like Perth and Fremantle offer all possible facilities to visiting yachts, and from the west coast of Australia there are two options: start crossing the Indian Ocean as early as possible after the cyclone season or sail north to Indonesia.

Coastal sailing

In Australian sailing vocabulary, ‘cruising’ doesn’t mean bluewater cruising, but is mainly coastal daysailing from port to anchorage. Coastal sailing in Australia therefore comes with lots of interesting options, often seen as luxuries by foreign cruisers, such as streaming internet up to 25 miles offshore and ample provisioning (around every corner there is a supermarket and an ATM).

We joked how cruising the east coast is ‘sailing with a watch in your hand’, as a lot of the entrances are river mouths with sandbars across them, requiring careful calculation to cross the bar at the turn of the tide. The navigational challenges can be roughly summarised in three words: current, depressions and sea breeze.

First the current. Along the east coast of Australia there is a southbound current of up to four knots which makes for fast sailing to the south, but rather tedious work when sailing up north, unless you use the countercurrent close inshore. Along the south coast the Leeuwin current flows east at a rate of 0.5 knots. On the west coast the Leeuwin current is stronger and flows south at a rate of about one knot.

The second challenge is the depressions. They flow in a steady succession from west to east, bringing troughs and fronts. The quality of the available forecasts is high, so you can make good use of the wind the depressions generate to propel you in the right direction. Going against the prevailing winds makes for tough conditions though, because in the shallow coastal areas steep wind-waves build up very quickly.

Australia’s hot interior generates sea breezes. Again, if you study them and use them to your advantage, it can make for some fine passages. But you need to be careful. Sea breezes can easily last for 12 hours and reach over 25 knots on top of the prevailing winds.

Timing and distances

The cruising season in southern Australia is at its best in January, February and March. That means that you can sail to Australia from, for instance, New Caledonia in September. This gives you the time to cruise at leisure down the coast and make some trips overland too. We went to Ayers Rock/Uluru.

You can spend the summer in Tasmania and sail back up in March, to be in time for the end of the cyclone season by the time you reach Queensland again. If you decide to go along the Bight, you need to leave Tasmania at the end of January to time your crossing of the Bight in February or March.

Entry in Australia

Australia has the reputation of being a tough country to enter. In reality, if you prepare yourself and your boat, there is no need to worry. The process is fairly straightforward and all necessary information is easy to find on the government websites.

Before arriving in Australia, every crew member needs to have a visa. There are two types. The e-visitor visa which is valid for three months. It is free of charge and can be extended. The other type is valid for one year (multiple entry) and costs AU$140. Both can be applied for online.

When you have been in certain countries in the Pacific for more than three months, you will need to have a chest X-ray before you arrive in Australia. Check the online forms carefully for the conditions.

For your boat there are two important steps. First, the cruising permit. This is issued on arrival and is valid for one year, with the option of extending it to three years. With this cruising permit as proof of being a ‘yacht in transit’, buying parts for the boat or having repairs done is exempt from sales tax (GST in Australia).

The second step is the biosecurity inspection. Fresh fruit, meat, dairy and eggs are not allowed. Importantly, the boat also needs to be without any pest infestation, such as fruit flies, termites, or growth on the hull. Australian agri- and aquaculture is strictly protected and the inspections are thorough.

At AU$60 per 15 minutes increments, it pays to prepare the boat in the port of departure, cleaning and making all surfaces accessible makes for a quick inspection. On average, the cost is AU$300 for the inspection.

Where to enter? There are roughly three options, depending on your cruising plans. If you want to do ‘Australia light’, the port of Bundaberg is the best. It is just below latitude 30°S, so you can wait for the cyclone season to pass north of you before you head to Cairns or further north.

If you want to cruise the east coast, ports further south such as Brisbane, Southport or even Coffs Harbour are attractive. If your focus is on Tasmania, you could even choose to enter in Sydney.

Fiji Navy patrol boat runs aground on maiden voyage, months after being donated by Australia

A Pacific patrol boat has run aground on its maiden voyage in Fiji, just a few months after it was handed over by the Australian government.

Fiji's Navy confirmed on Tuesday that the RFNS Puamau hit a reef on Fiji's remote Lau group of islands on Monday, midway through its first two-week long patrol.

No injuries have been reported but the accident is a major embarrassment for Fiji's Navy which commissioned the high-tech vessel less than a month ago after it was gifted to Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at a Perth ceremony in March.

In a statement, Fiji's Navy said its first priority was "the safety and welfare of all crew onboard and safely recovering the vessel".

"A crisis management team has been assembled to oversee the situation, with emergency support crews en route and secondary support arrangements underway in collaboration with our partners," it said.

Australia is helping with the recovery operation, with Fiji's Navy deploying another patrol boat to the stricken vessel and scrambling to pump water out of the engine room to ensure flooding is controlled.

It's not yet clear how seriously it has been damaged, but the ABC has been told that any delays in salvaging the vessel could exacerbate the damage.

A local witness told the ABC that the passage where the RFNS Puamau ran aground was known to be treacherous, and that there were strong easterly winds at the weekend.

They also said that most commercial ferries don't attempt to enter the area.

The Guardian-class patrol boats are popular with Pacific Island governments, which use the Australian-built high-tech vessels to survey their vast maritime zones and track illegal fishing.

Nineteen boats have so far been handed over to Pacific nations under the Pacific Maritime Security Program.

But the program has also been plagued by issues — with Pacific Minister Pat Conroy revealing not long after taking office that the patrol vessels had several defects including potential problems with the exhaust system.

Multiple patrol vessels have also been damaged in recent years, due to mishaps or natural disasters.

Australia handed a new Guardian-class patrol boat to Samoa late last year after the police ran aground the $30 million Nafanua II in October 2021, damaging it beyond repair.

Two other patrol boats — Tuvalu's HMTSS Te Mataili, and Vanuatu's RVS Takuare — were also badly damaged by the twin cyclones that hit Vanuatu in March last year.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced earlier this year that Australia would "fast track" a replacement Guardian-class Patrol Boat for Tuvalu.

A defence spokesperson told the ABC that the RVS Takuare was currently in Cairns being repaired.

"Australia remains committed to being the security partner of choice for Pacific countries," they said.

"Our view, shared by Pacific leaders, is that security in the region is best provided by the Pacific family."

The ex-partner of Kylie Jenner rapper Travis Scott allegedly told police “it’s Miami,” after he was arrested in the US for disorderly intoxication and trespassing.

The 33-year-old rapper was booked for allegedly causing a “disturbance” on a charter boat at the Miami Beach Marina, in Florida, early on Thursday morning, US time.

Scott – who has two children with Keeping up with Kardashians ’ star Jenner – was getting off the boat when the boat owner told him to leave, TV station 7News Miami reported.

A fight reportedly broke out on the yacht.

The boat owner reportedly didn’t want to press charges but did want him away from the vessel.

After leaving, Scott allegedly then walked back towards to boat and became “erratic” and began yelling, ignoring multiple police warnings to stay away from the vessel, reported The New York Post .

“He was drunk, causing a disturbance, and asked to leave multiple times,” Miami Beach Police Department officers told the network.

Officers said Scott “became irate screaming profanities, left, and returned to disturb some more”.

Scott was arrested at 1.17am (3.17pm AEST) and booked at 4.35am at Miami-Dade County Jail.

He allegedly told police “it’s Miami,” when he told them he had been drinking.,

He has posted bond, which was set at $500 ($A750) for trespassing and $150 ($A225) for disorderly intoxication, reported the US Sun .

Scott – real name is Jacques Bermon Webster – was seen looking sombre and bleary-eyed in his mugshot.

He appeared to address the arrest when he posted “LOL” on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.

“There was no physical altercation with anyone,” a source familiar with the incident told The Post.

“This was a rowdy party and Travis was already bailed out for a few hundred dollars. He is already home,” they added.

Scott is eight days away from his European tour, Circus Maximus , which kicks off in Arnhem, Netherlands on June 28.

His arrest comes after he was allegedly involved in a fistfight with Jenner’s other ex Tyga at a party in Cannes.

Several videos showed several people, including Scott and Tyga, in the brawl in May.

It began behind a DJ booth at a party hosted by promoter Richie Akiva and nearly spilled out into the crowd.

The fight also involved Cher’s boyfriend, Alexander “AE” Edwards, and producer Southside

Before the altercation, rapper Richie announced to the crowd that both Scott and Tyga were in the room – which reportedly angered Scott.

He snatched the microphone out of Richie’s hand, threatened Tyga’s security, and stormed offstage, entertainment website TMZ reported at the time.

Southside and AE started to fight when Scott brought Southside to the stage, The New York Post’s Page Six reported.

It was reported that security broke up the brawl and no one was severely injured.

Scott and Tyga have both dated Kardashians star Kylie – although sources insisted their mutual ex wasn’t the cause of the disagreement.

Jenner began dating Tyga when she was 17 and he was 24 in 2014.

They split in 2017 and Jenner began dating Scott the same month that they broke up.

WJAR produced first live broadcast of America's Cup race

WJAR made television history in 1983 in the waters off Newport. We produced the first live telecast of an America's Cup race.

It was the seventh and deciding race between the Royal Perth Yacht Club's Australia II and the New York Yacht Club's Liberty.

Broadcast live worldwide, everyone was eager to see if the Americans' 132-year win streak would end.

Australia II won the race, with credit given to a secret keel design that was not revealed until after the race.

Reluctantly, the U.S. handed over the trophy.

"According to the wishes of syndicate head Alan Bond, the trophy, no matter what turf it rests on, will still be called the America's Cup," NBC 10's Beverly Schuch reported.

American teams have since won back the cup, but the marquee race has never returned to Newport.

"The Boys in the Boat," "The Marvels" and more movies arrive on streaming this week

January is in full swing and we have some great new movies coming this week on Netflix, Hulu, and other major streaming services .

One streaming service we won't see on this list though is Disney Plus . That's because " The Marvels " is hitting paid video-on-demand streaming services rather than Disney's subscription streaming service. It's a bit of an eyebrow-raising move, but Disney quietly put the past two Marvel movies on PVOD streaming before Disney Plus as well. Seems like CEO Bob Iger has made some changes behind the scenes when it comes to the streaming strategy.

Aside from the latest from Marvel though, we also get George Clooney's newest directorial film "The Boys in the Boat." And the movie "Dumb Money" starring Paul Dano is one of a few movies hitting Netflix this week.

Some of these titles are newly available via digital release, so you can purchase them for a premium price, but for others, all you need is the right streaming subscription. So without further ado, here are the top new movies streaming this week.

'The Boys in the Boat' (PVOD)

Based on the true story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team, "The Boys in the Boat" stars Callum Turner as Joe Rantz, one of the members of the men's eight (eight rowers in the boat) team at the University of Washington. This team of inexperienced rowers led by coach Al Ulbrickson Sr. (Joel Edgerton) not only would beat some of the most prestigious programs in the U.S. but would go on to compete in the 1936 Summer Olympics.

The critical consensus is that director George Clooney doesn't manage to make anything groundbreaking, but does produce a well-crafted inspirational sports movie. Audiences seem more than satisfied with that, as the audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is an astonishing 96% "fresh."

'The Marvels' (PVOD)

Another movie where critics and audiences disagree, " The Marvels " is the latest Marvel movie from Disney and the follow-up to both the "Captain Marvel" movie and the "Ms. Marvel" TV show. Returning Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau (previously seen in "WandaVision") and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, this movie has the three superheroes fighting the next threat from the Kree — when they're not accidentally switching places across the galaxy.

"The Marvels" may not be the next great superhero movie but it is by many accounts a fun, enjoyable movie. Plus, at just 105 minutes, it's refreshingly brief compared to the trend of two-and-a-half to three-hour epics that has taken over Hollywood. You'll be forgiven if you wait for it to hit Disney Plus, but the movie does seem worth a watch.

'Next Goal Wins' (PVOD)

"Next Goal Wins" is based on the true tale of the world's worst soccer team. The movie stars Michael Fassbender as journeyman football club manager Thomas Rongen, who after being dismissed from his position as head of the U.S. Mens National Team U-20 team, becomes the head coach of American Samoa. At the time, American Samoa is a team most famous for its 31-0 loss to Australia — the worst in international football history.

This Taika Waititi movie is another example of critics and audiences disagreeing. While the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus pans the film for missing the mark, audiences agree that, while not groundbreaking, this comedy about a band of misfits led by Fassbender is an enjoyable, heartwarming sports movie.

'Invisible Beauty' (Hulu)

Model. Activist. Pioneer. All three words could be used to accurately describe Bethann Hardison, one the first major Black models in the high fashion world. In 1973, she would be one of 11 Black models to feature for American designers at the Battle of Versailles Fashion Show, which would become a landmark moment for the industry. Since then, Hardison has gone on to be an activist for Black models, whose work is considered essential in ensuring diversity in the field.

Originally, Hardison — fittingly — did not want "Invisible Beauty" to be about her. In an interview with CBC Radio , she said that she wanted to initially make a film about the fashion industry but was told time and time again the film should be about her instead. Ultimately, she realized that to make a documentary that shared the message she wanted about Black representation in fashion, she needed to tell her story.

Stream on Hulu starting Jan. 18

'Fallen Leaves' (MUBI)

Starring Alma Pöysti as Ansa and Jussi Vatanen as Holappa, two working-class Finns who against all odds try to build a relationship, "Fallen Leaves" is the latest in director Aki Kaurismäki's Proletariat series of films. It's also entirely in Finnish, though don't let that stop you. It's one of 15 films shortlisted for a Best International Feature Film nomination at this year's Academy Awards. 

Full disclosure, the split between critics and audiences on this one is fierce, at least on Rotten Tomatoes . Critics almost universally love the film, but audiences ... not so much. Many still like it, but many also find it to be boring and fail to connect with the film. Still, it's tough to pass on streaming an Oscar contender when it comes to streaming.

Stream on MUBI starting Jan. 19

'The Kitchen' (Netflix)

In this version of dystopian London, the city has eliminated all social housing. However, some residents refuse to leave their homes, forming an unsafe zone known as "The Kitchen." The movie stars Kane Robinson as Izi, one of The Kitchen's residents and Jedaiah Bannerman as Benji, who seems to be Izi's son based on the trailer. Early reviews for the first film from directors Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya (yes, that Daniel Kaluuya) seem to be promising, so check out "The Kitchen" once it hits Netflix this week.

'Dumb Money' (Netflix)

Remember when GameStop and the WallStreetBets subreddit dominated the conversation during the COVID-19 pandemic? Well, the people behind "Dumb Money" do, because that's exactly what this movie is about.

In this Craig Gillespie-directed film, Paul Dano stars as Keith Gill, the YouTuber who started the trend of buying GameStop shares. That trend goes supernova when people like Jenny (America Ferrera), Riri (Myha'la Herrold), Harmony (Talia Ryder) and Marcos (Anthony Ramos) start buying the stock too, making them all millions. This causes hedge fund managers Steve Cohen (Vincent D'Onofrio), Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen) and Ken Griffin (Nick Offerman) to start hemorrhaging money, and they start using their influence behind the scenes to stop the bleeding. Also starring Pete Davidson, Shailene Woodley and Sebastian Stan, this loaded ensemble cast is worth watching, regardless of the story.
