The women of superyachting

As the world honours international women’s day, we revisit interviews with female superyacht owners….

marae sailing yacht owner

In celebration of International Women’s Day, I dove back into the archives here at The Superyacht Group’s HQ, to uncover conversations with some of the most interesting female superyacht owners, who shared their experiences and allowed us a sneak peek into their world.

Mary Shores, owner of the 33m S/Y Marae , believed that a motoryacht was never truly on the cards for her and her husband, Mark.  “We did give a brief thought once to a motoryacht, but knew deep down that a sailing yacht was always what we wanted.” The couple, who have spent their lives on the water, growing up around the USA’s Chesapeake Bay, wanted to make the leap from their smaller vessels but were waiting for perfection, which came in the form of the sloop built in 2004 by Alloy Yachts.  “We looked at a number of sailing yachts over several years, but when we saw Marae for the first time we were so struck by her beauty that we were left speechless,” she remembered.

Not afraid to get her hands dirty, Sherron Hemsley spoke to The Superyacht Owner about the refit of her and her husband’s 30m Feadship La Mascarade , launched in 1997. The duo consulted with a number of refit experts, consultants and designers, but after the initial shock of their advice (“Common sense just seemed to go right out the window,” recalled Hemsley ), they decided to manage the project themselves. “I loved the refit process. I enjoy having lots of things to fit into a space and making it all work, like a puzzle,” she added.  This autonomy continued after the refit was completed, as the couple still manage the busy charter vessel themselves.

“I loved the refit process. I enjoy having lots of things to fit into a space and making it all work, like a puzzle.”

The inspiring work of the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) is due to the co-founder of the project and owner of M/Y Phoenix , Regina Catrambone. Catrambone, alongside her husband Christopher, have rescued nearly 15,000 migrants from the Mediterranean using their 40m refitted vessel, built in 1973. “The law is rather straightforward in that it is everybody’s obligation at sea to help somebody else in distress,” explained Catrambone. “Equally important is the moral obligation and the age-old tradition to save lives at sea no matter what, but many just don’t know what to do.”

The husband and wife team are dedicated to helping migrants in the region, but also enabling captains, owners and other vessels to assist in their endeavors. “Many captains and crew end up in tears because they don’t even have enough water to give to these people. I’ve heard them many times on the radio,” she said. “We want owners to enjoy the sea. I understand their frustration and fear of encountering migrants in distress. Their holidays will be ruined in a way – there is no shame in that.” Catrambone exemplifies the breed of yacht owner who believes that they have an important part to play in using their vessel, influence and means to make the world a better place. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that you’ve participated in saving the life of someone else, particularly young children who could now have a better future ahead of them."

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know that you’ve participated in saving the life of someone else, particularly young children who could now have a better future ahead of them.”

Managing a refit for a yacht is a tricky process for any owner, but tackling the iconic, classic 1986 Feadship The Highlander , must have been a fairly daunting task. But, for Joanne de Guardiola and her husband Roberto, the prospect was too tempting to pass on. “I had seen the boat and decided it was too good an opportunity to resist: it was both a Bannenberg and a Feadship and had a steel hull, which makes life on board a lot more comfortable and the yacht sit so well in the water. We went and looked at her and decided to buy her with a significant refit in mind.”

Using her extensive design experience, including three refits of her previous vessel the 49m Audacia , de Guardiola had a vision to preserve The Highlander ’s history, but give the yacht a fresher, modern look, as well as adding in features for a modern family. “We love swimming and water sports so taking off the back end of the boat was really about making it for the family. Now we have a swim platform that lifts out into the water and a toy garage underneath.” De Guardiola also focused on the realities of family life, not wanting an interior that was impractical or uncomfortable for those on board. “I don’t want silk or satin or tassels: I want it to be good-looking and stylish but also very practical. I certainly learned that some things lasted better on Audacia than others; I was able to see what holds up and what doesn’t. I ended up using a lot of indoor/ outdoor fabrics for Highlander ,” she recalled.

As the prominence of ultra-high-net-worth women continues to rise , the number of female superyacht owners is set to grow in the coming decades. Something definitely worth celebrating.

Mike Lynch yacht: The Bayesian's owner was close to billionaire and cost an enormous sum

British entrepreneur Mike Lynch is still missing following the capsizing the yacht he was on near Sicily.

While the billionaire has yet to be found , at least one person is confirmed dead from the accident while six are reported missing. Fifteen have been rescued, including Lynch’s wife , Angela Bacares.

The luxury yacht “suddenly sank” from what’s thought to have been “terrible weather conditions”, according to NBC. Lynch, 59, is the co-creator of the software corporation Autonomy and established Invoke Capital.

  • Missing billionaire Mike Lynch cleared of fraud just months before superyacht sinking in Italy

How much is the yacht 'The Bayesian' worth?

The Sun reports the 56-meter sailing yacht, called Bayesian, is worth £14 million, about $18 million. The average cost to buy a super yacht, which is a yacht between 37 to 60 meters, starts at about $10 million, according to Galati Yacht Sales .

Forbes said the cost to charter the Bayesian is $215,000 for one week. The yacht was listed for sale earlier this year, though it is no longer, according to BOAT International.

Who owned the Bayesian?

The yacht is legally owned by Lynch’s wife Bacares, Forbes reported. It was built in Italy in 2008 by renowned boat builder Perini Navi.

BOAT International reports the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier. It was originally known as Salute until 2016 when it was retrofitted and renamed Bayesian.

When it comes to length, Bayesian is in the top 5 percent in the world. It can accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms, and it has room for 9 crew members.

It is also one of the world’s tallest, with a single mast reaching 75 meters.

The average cost to buy a super yacht, which is a yacht between 37 to 60 meters, starts at about $10 million

Superyacht sinks latest: Hopes that air pockets offer slim chance of survival; divers form strategy to enter wreckage

Search efforts have entered a third day for six tourists missing after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily. Experts hope air pockets may offer a chance of survival, while divers have warned a "world of objects" stand in their way. Listen to a Daily podcast on the search as you scroll.

The divers' priority is to reach the cabins, where the missing tourists may have been sleeping at the time of the storm, says news correspondent Ashna Hurynag.

But they have been hampered by the amount of debris and furniture in the boat.

Search and rescue teams speculate some of that furniture was dislodged as the yacht capsized, blocking doorways and preventing people from escaping, says Hurynag.

" They're really being hampered by the amount of furniture, the amount of debris that is underwater within that vessel.

"The yacht is also in a complicated position. It's tilted on its side."

She adds: "They're having to work under very tight conditions and in searing heat."

Equipment has been shipped to the east coast of Palermo to aid their efforts, including an underwater remote-controlled search vehicle.

" People are expecting perhaps to see the hull of the ship being lifted up, the vessel itself being lifted out of the water: That's not going to be anything we're going to see for a very, very long time," says Hurynag.

" The priority is to try and preserve its position as much as possible because it is intact, and try and access it from outside."

As the search operation continues, investigators are attempting to figure out how the boat sank.

The captain will be key to this investigation, says Hurynag - as well as questions over the design of the boat and the weather -  but he "was in an incredible amount of shock" when he spoke yesterday.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it has developed a plan to enter the wreckage of the yacht.

Nineteen divers have been going down in groups of three and attempting to open a passage at the stern, La Repubblica reported.

This involves breaking through a glass window in the lounge area of the main deck to access the interior of the 56-meter yacht.

But efforts to reach the cabins are still obstructed by a "world of objects", fire department diver Marco Tilotta told Reuters news agency.

"So, getting inside and descending into the compartment below from the stairs that are narrow and going into all of the cabins is a really hard and difficult job.

"We are not stopping. We have resources, manpower and means."

The Italian coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

That the vessel sank at speed and remains intact on its side "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside", said Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer of mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University.

"This is obviously highly speculative and impossible to predict accurately."

Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of missing Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, told the BBC his fingers were crossed.

"It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

David Tabizel, who established software company Autonomy with missing British tycoon Mike Lynch, told Sky News: "I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur.

"If anyone has the resilience to survive this - he does. And I hope he's found an air pocket."

Dr Souppez said a sign the rescuers may be looking for is a "banging noise at regular intervals".

"This is common practice on submarines and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year."

Yesterday, Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian coastguard said the missing were unlikely to be alive.

"Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not."

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Bayesian shipwreck, as the search for six missing tourists, including four Britons, enters its third day.

Still unaccounted for are British tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Divers spent Tuesday struggling to enter the cabins of the superyacht on the seabed off the Sicilian coast, after confirming the bridge was empty.

Italian authorities said their working theory is the missing are still inside the boat, as search crews cut a hole in the hull in an attempt to gain access.

An engineer who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia in 2012 warned rescue divers entered a "critical" 24 hours yesterday.

The coastguard confirmed a body found after the yacht sank yesterday was that of chef Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national who was working on the Bayesian superyacht.

And the captain of the Bayesian spoke for the first time on Tuesday, saying of the storm: "We didn't see it coming."

We're pausing our coverage for tonight but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Six people are still missing after the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht, with rescue teams searching off the Sicilian coast for survivors;
  • The Italian coastguard confirmed that the body found after the yacht sank yesterday is that of chef Recaldo Thomas;
  • The coastguard also named more survivors - Leah Randall, Katja Chicken and Leo Eppel;
  • An engineer who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia said rescue divers have entered a "critical" 24 hours;
  • The captain of Bayesian spoke for the first time, saying: "We didn't see it coming" in reference to the storm that sank the boat.

Images are emerging of emergency crews working near the site where the yacht sank in Porticello.

Search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results and experts have said we are in a "critical" 24 hours.

Bayesian was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time yesterday.

A friend of Recaldo Thomas, the chef who was killed as the yacht sank, has described him as a "calm spirit" who had a "smile that lit up the room".

Gareth Williams, who grew up with Mr Thomas in Antigua, told the BBC : "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Mr Thomas was also a Canadian citizen. The country's foreign ministry said it was "aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died" and that consular officials were in contact with local authorities.

Mike Lynch "lost the last 12 years fighting a ridiculous case", his co-founder has told Sky News.

David Tabizel, who founded the software company Autonomy with Mr Lynch - the sale of which became the subject of the US fraud case - said he was a "legend" and that he had a "very soft spot for him".

"I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur," he said.

Mr Tabizel said Mr Lynch's "resilience" and "importance to British economy cannot be overstated".

"Now he has passed through this great trauma we were hoping he would lead a new national revolution to help Britain out of its current moribund state," he said.

Mr Tabizel added: "He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing."

Mr Lynch sold Autonomy to US computing giant Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£8.6bn).

He was accused of conspiracy and attempted fraud over the sale to HP and an intense, multiyear legal battle in the US ensued.

He was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after more than a year under house arrest.

CCTV footage showing the yacht moments before it sank has been released.

We reported on separate footage earlier, shot from a villa 200m away from the site of the disaster in Porticello.

The owner of the villa told outlet Giornale Di Sicilia the shots showed the boat sinking in 60 seconds: "You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. It disappeared in a very short time."

Experts have said we're in a critical 24 hours in the search for survivors.

Earlier, Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia, said survivors might be trapped in air pockets, but that time was running out to save them (see post at 12.50pm).

Now Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Aston University, has said the speed at which the vessel sank (a few minutes, according to accounts) and the fact that it remains intact "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside".

While the formation is "highly speculative", he says, there are records of survivors found in such pockets.

"A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals: this is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year," he says.

"But whether air pockets formed on the Bayesian is simply impossible to predict."

Luxury yacht sinks off Sicily, leaving U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 Americans among those missing

By Anna Matranga

Updated on: August 20, 2024 / 7:47 PM EDT / CBS News

Rome  — Six people, including two U.S. nationals, a British technology entrepreneur and one of his daughters, were still missing Tuesday after a large luxury sailing yacht sank off the coast of the southern Italian island of Sicily during a violent storm. The 184-foot Bayesian had been anchored about half a mile off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, with 22 people on board — 10 crew members and 12 passengers.

The vessel sank at about 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. Eastern, Sunday) after being hit by a possible waterspout spawned by the storm. Italian media said the winds snapped the boat's single mast, unbalancing the vessel and causing it to capsize.

Fifteen of those on board managed to escape the yacht and were rescued by a Dutch-flagged vessel that was anchored in the immediate vicinity. They were brought ashore by Italian Coast Guard and firefighters.

One body — an unidentified male — was recovered, but six people remained missing, including British software magnate Mike Lynch, once described as Britain's Bill Gates.

Lynch was acquitted in June of fraud charges in the U.S. that could have landed him with a decades-long prison sentence. In an unusual twist, Lynch's co-defendant in that fraud case, who was also acquitted, died Saturday after being hit by a car while out jogging in England.

Lynch's teenage daughter Hannah was also among those missing, along with Lynch's American lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant district attorney in New York, and his wife Neda. British banker Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, was also still missing Tuesday.

Among the survivors was a 1-year-old British girl who was being treated at a nearby hospital along with her parents. They were doing well, according to Italian media.

"For two seconds I lost my child to the sea, then I immediately was able to grab her again in the fury of the waves," the girl's mother, identified only as Charlotte, was quoted as saying by Italy's ANSA news agency. "I held on to her tightly in the stormy sea. Many were screaming. Luckily the life raft opened up and 11 of us managed to get aboard."

"It was terrible," she told ANSA. "In just a few minutes the boat was hit by a very strong wind, and sunk soon thereafter."

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Dutch vessel that came to the rescue, told ANSA he had been anchored near the Bayesian.

"When the storm was over we noticed that the ship behind us was gone, and then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position and we found this life raft drifting, and in the life raft was also a little baby and the wife of the owner."

Recovery efforts were back underway Tuesday, with speedboats, helicopters and divers continuing to search for the missing — as well as for answers, as to how a state-of-the-art superyacht could disappear in a flash.

According to Italian media, Fire Brigade divers reached the boat and saw bodies trapped inside some of the cabins, but they had been unable to recover any of the victims from inside the vessel by Tuesday, due to obstructions. The Bayesian appeared to have sunk in an area with a depth of about 160 feet.

Witnesses said the boat sank quickly.

"I was at home when the tornado hit," fisherman Pietro Asciutto told a local news outlet. "I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I suddenly saw it sink... The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes."

The director-general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, confirmed to CBS News partner BBC News  that three of the six people still missing Monday were British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, whose company Autonomy Corporation PLC was acquired in 2011 by HP ; one of his daughters, Hannah Lynch, who is believed to be 18; and the boat's chef, Ricardo Thomas.

CBS News has seen corporate documentation showing a company called Revtom, solely owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who was among those rescued from the accident, as the owner of the yacht that capsized off Sicily.

While the yacht was a privately owned pleasure boat, the waters around the island have claimed many lives over the last decade.

Dozens of migrants have died attempting to reach Sicily and smaller Italian islands in the region. Sicily sits only about 100 miles from the east coast of Tunisia in north Africa, and the Mediterranean crossing has been a frequent site of both nautical rescues and disasters as smugglers routinely send small boats overloaded with desperate people into the sea.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far:

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

Who is missing?

A collage of three men

Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include:

  • Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
  • Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
  • The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued?

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

  • Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
  • Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
  • Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
  • New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
  • A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

Two boats in the sea

This picture taken on Sunday shows the Bayesian (left) and the Duch sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell anchored off the coast line.   ( AP: Fabio La Bianca/Baia Santa Nicolicchia )

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.
