Sea Trial: Pershing 9x

The Pershings are the ultimate lush rush.

They are 40-plus-knot performance delivered with rooster-tail ostentation. They’re for blasting over to the best spot for lunch ahead of the pack. For going a bit farther, faster, to reach the best diving. For being the last yacht to leave the bay on a Sunday evening and still getting back to the dock first.

And the Italian builder’s 9x is pure Pershing . A pair of 2,638 hp 16V 2000 M96L MTUs hooked up to Top System surface drives deliver massive punch and a plume that can top 30 feet. Pershing says the maximum speed for this 92-footer is 42 knots, although during our test off La Spezia, Italy, we managed a knot more at something approaching half-load: 11 people, one-third fuel, one-half fresh water, and empty black and gray tanks, but a full garage. Conditions were close to perfect, with still air and flat-calm seas that we couldn’t wait to tear up. The only imperfection was an outside air temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit, which, with a backdrop of snow-capped Apennine Mountains, probably seemed more brisk than our reality. Certainly if you were outside when she was wound up, you noticed the wind chill, but thankfully her interior was a constant 66 degrees F, so I can vouch for the heating system, although I would rather not make a habit of it. I’m British and prefer yachting weather to be like my tea: hot.

Handling is as fun as I can imagine with 165,000 pounds or so of yacht. She feels every bit as precise as smaller Pershing models, running on a hull developed from Pershing’s 92, which in turn evolved from the 90 and 88.

Must-have options, based on my time aboard, include twin Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizers for comfort at anchor, and a Xenta electro-hydraulic joystick control system for close-quarters maneuvering. At speeds faster than 8 knots, skippers can cruise the yacht using the joystick, a trick that I found immensely satisfying in the big seats down below as well as on the flybridge. Altering course required nothing more than a slight twist of my thumb and index finger.

At a 38-knot cruise, our 9x’s motors were turning 2,250 rpm and burning 110 gallons per engine, which, allowing for a 10 percent reserve, equates to a range of almost 370 nautical miles. At full chat, those diesels are sucking up 2.2 gallons per minute, or 6.3 gallons per nautical mile. Setting the throttles to bumble, which I deem to be around 750 rpm, sees the 9x settle into a 10-knot cruise for around 900 nautical miles.

Pershing interiors are crisp, reflecting youthful tastes. Our test yacht, Najati, fused a satin-gloss ebony and whitened oak sole, along with furnishings from Poltrona Frau and cushions by Fendi Casa. I was convinced that some of the cupboards were sheathed in snakeskin or exotic printed leather, until I realized the material was a silvery fabric. It’s a nice vibe.

Owners can choose a three- or four-stateroom layout. Najati has the master amidships, the VIP forward with a diagonal berth, and two guest staterooms in between (their berths can convert from twins to doubles). The companionway belowdecks is off-center, which means the starboard stateroom is a little beamier than the one to port.

The chaise lounge in the owners’ stateroom is the biggest touch point on the yacht. I tried it with enthusiasm, but actually, as is, it isn’t quite right for my 6-foot-6-inch frame. I found it more comfortable when I was sitting the wrong way around, with my back to the bulkhead, although I’m quite sure Pershing’s engineers would sort that one out for me in a flash if I asked.

The yacht’s galley doubling as a crew mess is also on this deck, reached by a dogleg staircase from the portside corner of the main salon.

A garage under the stern sun pad is big enough for a tender and a toy. Najati has the largest Williams RIB that fits, a Turbojet 385, as well as a Sea-Doo.

Following our sea trial, Najati faced a long voyage south as a large piece of deck cargo, on a transport ship bound for Africa. Her owner was taking delivery in Angola, where mining and oil resources have created one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies — growing almost as fast as the Pershing 9x flies.

Coming Soon: Super Pershings

The first Pershing 140 is under construction at the Ferretti Group’s facilities in Ancona, Italy. As with all Pershings since 1985, Fulvio de Simoni designed this new flagship, which has a snub nose. The 140 is also the first all-aluminum Pershing, the first to have a raised pilothouse, and the longest hull to date, besting her next-closest sistership by 25 feet. Features will include a beach club with three fold-down sides, and a covered hot tub on the foredeck.

Fabrication began in early 2017, and Hull No. 1 is expected to launch by September, when she’ll be delivered to Asia as Chorus Line. She has the more powerful of two propulsion options: four MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls and four Marine Jet Power water jets, with a projected maximum speed around 40 knots.

Pershing recently released renderings of an even bigger trideck design, the 170, which would combine aluminum and carbon fiber in its construction. The builder says that a few clients are interested, and that a second Pershing 140 is scheduled for delivery in late 2019.

The Pershing 9X may be as fast and fabulous as ever but it now has the polished manners to match its outrageous performance

Back in the 90s supercars used to be big, brash noisy things that were brutish to drive and more than a little intimidating. If you overcooked it on a corner or backed off the throttle at the wrong time there was a real danger of stacking your Ferrari F40 or Lamborghini Diablo into a hedge. The same was true of fast, surface-drive boats. Alan Harper tells a salutary tale of the time he barrelled into a turn with too much trim and sent the whole shooting match into a violent spin that sent fellow journalists scattering around the cockpit. It wasn’t until the advent of the Honda NSX that people started to realise you could still enjoy all the speed, style and grip of a mid-engined sportscar without feeling like you’d just survived three rounds with Mike Tyson. Of course some old dinosaurs bemoaned the fact that supercars had lost their edge now that anyone could jump behind the wheel and give it some stick, but the steady rise in sales of supercars that were faster and prettier than ever but easier to drive soon shut them up. I mention this only because when Pershing announced last year that it was going to start fitting IPS drives and Seakeeper gyros to its latest offering, you could almost hear the ghosts of powerboat racers past spinning in their graves. To dyed-in-the-wool purists it must have sounded like Ducati was going to start fitting stabilisers and shopping baskets to its latest range of superbikes. I’m about to find out if their concerns are justified.

Baying superboat

The Pershing 9X I’m sitting at the helm of still looks and feels like a red-blooded superboat. The Fulvio De Simoni styling is as sleek and aggressive as ever. The carbon-fibre decks and superstructure show no expense has been spared in the quest for performance, and it’s powered by a pair of massive 2,638hp MTU V16s, with razor-sharp surface-drive propellers glistening under the bathing platform.

Only the small joystick jutting from the armrest of the main captain’s chair and a pair of Seakeeper MG9 gyro stabilisers tucked into the engineroom suggest there’s more to this set-up than meets the eye. Pershing calls it the Easy Set system and as the name suggests its purpose is to demystify the dark art of berthing and driving a powerful surface-drive boat. It had better work because my experience of driving such craft is slimmer than a stick insect’s waist and I’m about to unleash the full fury of those V16s on a very trusting crew. Perched high up on the innermost of the three captain’s chairs with the distinctive single-spoke wheel an arm’s stretch away in front of my knees and flanked by ZF’s stainless steel throttles on my right and the aforementioned joystick on my left, it feels more like the command station of the starship Enterprise than a regular boat helm. Three tall touchscreens dominate the view forward while a pair of deep windscreen mullions on either side block out a chunk of my peripheral vision. I take the decision that in a boat this fast it’s what’s in front of me that counts and ease the throttles decisively forward.

Somewhere behind me I can hear the pitch of the engines rise but it’s strangely muted and remote like the rumble of distant thunder. It takes a few seconds for the propellers to find their bite – the inertia of a 68-tonne boat takes some shifting – but a glance behind me reveals the water has turned from glassy blue to boiling white. Then it starts to happen, slowly at first but with a sense of impending inevitability that comes from having 5,276hp at your disposal.

The transition onto the plane is almost imperceptible as the Easy Set system adjusts the trim to compensate but once the turbos kick there’s no hiding the sheer immensity of the forces at work. The boiling mass of white erupts into a full-blown rooster tail, the water releases its grip on the hull and the 9X starts to skim across the surface like a smartly-thrown pebble.

Strong, silent type

The strange thing is that from where I’m sitting it all feels remarkably chilled. We’re reeling in the horizon at 42 knots in a 92ft cruise missile but without the speed over ground numbers flashing up on the Simrad MFD, I really wouldn’t know how fast we are travelling. The engines are so smooth that we can chat without raising our voices, the seals on the doors and windows block out any wind noise, and the Easy Set system means there’s nothing for me to do except decide how much throttle to use and point the bow where I want it to go. I try to induce some drama with an armful of lock. The fly-by-wire steering has an odd, artificially weighted feel that self-centres when you release it and sure enough the computer interprets my intentions, adjusts the trim and feeds in the rudders so that the boat traces a smooth steady arc that would barely ruffle the surface of a G&T.

Of course there’s a lot more to the 9X than simply getting to the best bay ahead of the chasing pack in order to grab the prime anchoring spot. You want to enjoy the boat when you get there and that’s where Pershing has also taken major strides. The tender garage has a drop-down ramp that makes launching the Williams 385 and PWC a doddle. The foredeck seating area and cleverly concealed sundeck up top provide a number of different options for guests to hang out in the sun, while the clever drop-down patio doors create a seamless flow between the cockpit and saloon. And of course those two powerful Seakeeper stabilisers ensure it remains rock steady even in a Mediterranean swell.

Inside information

Personally, I found the interior decor of this boat a little too cool and clinical for my tastes but at this level customisation is a given so you should be able to specify a look that meets your needs. The master suite has 6ft 5in of headroom throughout, a totally flat floor and a large walk-in wardrobe in addition to a lavish ensuite bathroom.

The forward VIP is a little more unusual with its offset bed and asymmetrical hull windows making it seem a little less welcoming than the smaller but brighter guest double. The fourth cabin follows up the rear with a pair of narrower single beds. The crew area occupies a similar footprint to the master cabin but houses the ship’s galley as well as two ensuite crew cabins.

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed.
