Sail the 1000 Islands and Lake Ontario

Cs36 “finisterre”.

This 1985 CS 36 is a great charter boat with sleeping for 6.  Powered by a 30 HP Westerbeke diesel engine, gives you lots of power to get to where you are going should sailing not be favourable.  Refrigeration and shore power available.  Galley is fully equipped, charts and chartplotter and a PORTS guide to help with your sailing plans.

Access Instructions: “Finisterre” – CS36 is located on the Breakwall dock number 13. These are the docks where the flags are closest to the water. Ample FREE parking near the main entrance of the building. Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, 53 Yonge St, Kingston, ON.

C&C30 “Tankard”

This 1976 C&C 30 has been well maintained over the years to give her a clean and comfortable appearance.  Room for a family up to five with a double V berth up forward, an interior table that converts to a double bed and a single berth on startboard.  The 21 HP Volvo Penta gives lots of reliable power when the breeze is not co-operating.  On board refrigeration with ample battery capacity and 200 watts of solar will ensure you keep all provisions cold on your charter, no need to go looking for ice.  Dinghy available. Access Instructions: When you enter the harbour drive to the right towards the water.  Ample FREE parking near the main entrance of the building.  You will see a red fixed mast stepping crane next to the fuel station, the dock next to this is “A” dock.  Walk down this dock and you will see the boat about half way down on the left side.

Bareboat Sailing Experience

We look for experienced sailors that have either owned or chartered a keelboat in the past, have knowledge of chart reading, rules on the water, aids to navigation, VHF Marine Radio operation.

All boaters from Canada are now required to carry a Pleasure Craft Operators Card, so please ensure you have one and bring it along on your charter. Non-residents may demonstrate proof of competency by providing proof of competency from their own country or by completing a Rental Boat Safety Check List. This checklist will be provided by Ahoy Rentals and will be reviewed with you when we do the check out of the boat at the start of your charter.

Once you have completed the “Sailing Resume” and we have determined that you have sufficient experience, we will confirm availability.

Wait, Don't I Need a License to Rent a Boat? 

Worried about having the right license and all the right paperwork? Don't! Getting your pleasure craft operator card is easy and affordable. Go to the BOATsmart! website and you can be licensed in just a few hours !

Although it is strongly recommended, you do not need a pleasure craft operator card to rent a boat in Ontario. There are specific requirements for a person without proof of competency who want to rent a pleasure craft fitted with a motor. This includes the completion of the Rental Boat Safety Checklist with the rental boat/outfitter representative; understanding the knowledge and skills given by the rental boat/outfitter representative; signing the Rental Boat Safety Checklist; and carrying onboard the co-signed section of the Rental Boat Safety Checklist as proof of competency for the duration of the rental. It's also recommended that you be aware of the rental operator’s responsibilities.

We specialize in captained charters for 1/2 day, full day, multi-day excursions, and our most popular sunset charter. Want to learn to sail? Sail Ontario is a professional certification facility, an American Sailing Association Affiliate school, teaching ASA 101, 103, and 104 courses. And when you finish that, we have boats available to take out on your own. Choose from our fleet for your  next rental and enjoy sailing the lake on your own.

Sail Ontario is pleased to offer several “stay and sail” packages where  you can pair a night or two on the boat with a charter, a lesson, and even a rental. If you want to enjoy the fullest sailboat experience, bring sleeping bag and a pillow and stay aboard before and/or after your sailing excursion.

Locally owned and operated, Ahoy Rentals was founded in 1997 by Andrew Kelm. What started out modestly renting a few sailboats and bicycles has now grown into fleet of over 50 watercrafts and bicycles.

We have Kayaking, Stand UP Paddle boarding, Canoeing, Cycling and Sailing Rentals all in one location. We assist you with route suggestions, whether you wish to bike along the waterfront trails or be more adventurous and visit Big Sandy Bay on Wolfe Island. LONG WEEKEND WRAP: Boat crash kills 3, injures 5 on lake north of Kingston

Three people are dead, and five others injured after a speed boat and a fishing boat collided Saturday night on Bobs Lake, north of Kingston, Ont.

OPP say the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the Bucks Bay-area of the lake.

They say two women, ages 21 and 22, and a 23-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene, reported the Canadian Press.

Five others, between the ages of 21 and 44, were transported to a local hospital with a range of injuries.

Police say one boat was described as an open-bow, fishing-style boat and the other as a speed boat.

OPP spokesman Bill Dickson says an investigation is underway but did not provide further details.

MAN SHOT IN SCARBOROUGH

A man is in hospital after a Saturday night shooting in Scarborough.

The shooting happened at 2:50 a.m. on Cotton Ave. in the Danforth Rd.-Kennedy Rd. area.

Toronto Police say there was a dispute outside the house.

A man was shot and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

COPS HUNTING MALE SUSPECT AFTER AJAX SHOOTING

A man is wanted by police after a daylight shooting in Ajax.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded to the Lankester-Drake Lanes area on Saturday at about 4:20 p.m. after reports of gunshots. “Numerous” shell casings were found at the scene, but no victims were located.

“It is believed … there was a dispute between a group of males and a lone male,” Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss said in a news release. “The lone male fired numerous shots at the group in response to the altercation.”

She said the police are looking for a Black male suspect with a medium build who was wearing black clothing and a black mask.

IMPAIRED DRIVER HITS FIRE TRUCK

A 29-year-old Brampton man is facing impaired driving charges after a vehicle hit a fire truck.

The OPP said the fire truck was protecting the scene of another collision when it was hit at 2:26 a.m. on Saturday on Hwy. 403, at Aberdeen Ave., in Hamilton.

There were no injuries.

HATE MOTIVATED MISCHIEF

Toronto Police are looking for a suspect after outer glass doors and windows were damaged at a synagogue.

Police describe the vandalism, which happened Friday at 3:30 a.m. the Bayview Ave.-Fifeshire Rd. area, as an act of suspected hate-motivated mischief.

The suspect, who fled the area, was wearing a blue hooded jacket, black pants and back shoes.

Police urged anyone with information to call 416-808-3500.

PROVINCAL WATCHDOG INVESTIGATES DEATH

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a 28-year-old woman who died in police custody on Friday morning.

Barrie Police Service officers arrested the woman Thursday night for outstanding warrants. She was taken to the station and held in a cell.

On Friday evening, an OPP special constable transported the woman from the Barrie Police Service station to Central North Correction Centre.

The woman was unresponsive in the vehicle and taken to hospital in Midland, where she was pronounced dead.

Geneva City Council chooses Woodward Rentals for kayak, paddle board services

People visiting Lakefront Park in Geneva will soon have a unique opportunity to rent kayaks and paddle boards from a local vendor.

The Geneva City Council unanimously selected Woodward Rentals at a special meeting on May 13 to provide the service this summer.

Woodward Rentals, rebranded as Seneca Shore Kayak & Paddle Co., was chosen from three businesses that responded to the city’s request for proposals.

The team at Woodward Rentals noted that while Seneca Lake presents some challenges, her team is prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all customers.

CRA ‘does not expect’ tenants to withhold rent from foreign landlords

After weeks of confusion, the federal revenue minister has clarified that individual tenants do not have to withhold 25 per cent of their rent from foreign landlords.

"I want to reassure Canadians that the Canada Revenue Agency does not intend to collect any portion of any non-resident landlords’ unpaid taxes from individual tenants. It is incorrect to state otherwise," Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a statement to The Trillium on Friday, following reports it went after a Montreal man for failing to do just that.

In April, the Globe and Mail reported that the Canada Revenue Agency pursued a case against a tenant after he didn’t remit 25 per cent of his rent because his landlord was a non-resident. 

The tenant was responsible for paying when the CRA couldn’t collect from the landlord, according to a Tax Court ruling in 2023.

That case "was an extremely rare situation," Bibeau said. "This law has existed for nearly a century, and there is not a single instance of an assessment made to an individual tenant in the last decade."

"The CRA does not expect individual tenants to withhold 25 per cent of the rent from their landlords."

Bibeau added that she's working with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland "to provide absolute clarity on the law and to ensure that tenants have the certainty they need and deserve, but I can assure Canadians that it does not, and will not, apply to them."

The 25 per cent remittance rule only applies when the landlord and tenant have a “business relationship,” the CRA said in a separate statement. The agency didn’t immediately respond to a request to clarify what that means.

The Montreal tenant lived in a residential unit, but paid his rent via a company that he held shares in.

“In most situations involving rental income, the CRA’s practice is to engage with the landlord rather than the tenant. However, to ensure tax fairness the CRA would engage directly with a tenant where there is a business relationship between the tenant and the landlord,” it said.

“These are exceptional and rare circumstances.” 

Nevertheless,  tenants across the country were spooked and Ontario politicians took note. 

Ontario Housing Minister Paul Calandra wrote to Bibeau on Thursday asking her to fix the law. 

“Our government firmly believes these actions, which are permitted under federal legislation, are unfair to tenants and ought to be prohibited. If landlords refuse to pay their taxes, then the CRA should be going after these landlords, not their tenants,” Calandra wrote. 

Calandra’s letter followed a missive from NDP housing critic Jessica Bell earlier in the week. She called on the federal government to change the “un-Canadian” rules so the CRA would no longer be allowed to collect unpaid landlord taxes from tenants.

After  The Trillium asked the CRA to confirm that tenants should proactively withhold 25 per cent of their rent if their landlord is a non-resident, an agency spokesperson said on Wednesday that they should — as long as a property manager or agent is not doing so already. 

“The responsibility lies with the tenant to withhold and remit. If the non-resident fails to remit, the tenant is responsible for the full amount,” spokesperson Sylvie Branch said in a statement two days ago.

The agency pointed to a federal web page that appeared to affirm its position, noting that “if you receive rental income from real or immovable property in Canada, the payer (such as the tenant) or agent (such as the property manager) must withhold non-resident tax of 25 per cent on the gross rental income paid or credited to you.”

On Thursday, the Trudeau government gave no indication it planned to change the rules.

It took until Friday for CRA to provide the “additional clarification” that without a tenant-landlord “business relationship,” the 25 per cent rule doesn’t apply.

“We understand that it is important for people to feel safe in their homes and this government will continue to ensure that the tax system is both fair and efficient for all Canadians,” Branch said.
