Chennai techie murder: Was it a case of love gone wrong?

In a disturbing incident, 26-year-old Vetrimaran lured his friend R Nandhini, employed as a techie, to a lonely spot, tied her up, slashed her many times and burnt her alive in a suburb of Chennai. The cops say the accused was obsessed with the victim and acted out when she refused his advances

Chennai techie murder: Was it a case of love gone wrong?

Love can be deadly. Even as people celebrated Christmas and are enjoying the festive season, here’s a horrific tale of a woman techie being chained, slashed and then burnt alive by her former classmate in a southern suburb of Chennai.

The police has arrested 26-year-old Vetrimaran alias Pandi Maheswari, who underwent a sex change operation for the unthinkable torture and murder of R Nandhini. They have revealed that the crime stems from the fact that the accused seemed to be over-possessive.

Here’s what we know of the case – believed to be a love story gone awry.

Murder most foul

On Saturday (24 December), 26-year-old Vetrimaran alias Pandi Maheswari under the pretext of throwing Nandhini a surprise birthday party, lured her to a lonely place in Ponmar in Thalambur police limits and blindfolded her.

According to the police, the transsexual man then chained Nandhini’s hands and feet as a “surprise,” slashed her neck and wrists, emptied a can of petrol and torched her before fleeing from the spot.

Gowtham Goyal, DCP Pallikaranai said, “Around 7:00 to 7:15 pm, he took her to a vacant plot near Ponmar Road. As per the preliminary investigation, he would have blindfolded her under the pretext of presenting a gift. After that, he chained her arms and legs before cutting her wrists and ankles. After that, he poured kerosene on her and left her immolating.”

Investigations reveal that Nandhini and Vetrimaran were old friends and, in fact, studied together while they were back in Madurai. The police investigation states that Nandhini chose to remain friends with Vetrimaran even after Vetrimaran underwent a sex-change operation. Both of them were employed by a private IT firm in Thoraipakkam, which led to a further intertwining of their lives.

Authorities believe that the murder arises from Vetrimaran’s obsession with Nandhini. Vetrimaran, it is believed, had begun arguing with Nandhini if he saw her talking to other men.

Reports state that on 23 December, Vetrimaran called up Nandhini to say that he would not quarrel with her and asked her to meet him as he planned “a surprise” for her birthday. Nandhini agreed to meet Vetrimaran, not knowing what would come next.

The police have revealed that the crime was well-planned and he had plotted the murder for a week.

The incident came to light after locals noticed smoke coming from an old building near Ponmar near Thalambur in Chennai around 7.30 pm on Saturday. When the locals saw smoke emanating from the vacant plot, they went closer to investigate and found a woman lying unconscious with her hands and feet tied and her body burnt with petrol. And even though they immediately rushed into action, calling the ambulance, she succumbed to her wounds in the hospital.

Notably, when Nandhini was rushed to the hospital, she was able to utter a phone number and when officials dialed it, Vetrimaran answered the call and said he was her friend. A police official said, “He came to the spot and helped the police take her to the hospital. It was only later during interrogation that he confessed to his crime.”

The authorities further added that Vetrimaran displayed no signs of remorse for the act he had perpetrated. In fact, in his statement to the police, he said that he was upset over Nandhini refusing to be in a relationship with him. Vetrimaran had gone through a sex-change process at a private hospital a few years back, however Nandhini told him that they had no future together.

Old friends

Nandhini and Vetrimaran’s friendship went way back. They were friends in Madurai since Class I.

After school, Vetrimaran began identifying as a man, owing to which many people cut off contact with him, but not Nandhini. Nandhini’s family reveal that she did not want to hurt her friend and chose to remain in touch with him.

Amudha, Nandhini’s elder sister was quoted as telling the DTNext , “Whenever Vetrimaran would visit Madurai, he would visit our home. I’ve often fed him with my own hands.”

In 2019, Vetrimaran underwent a sex-change operation and left Madurai. Around eight months ago, Nandhini, a BSc graduate in information technology, had got a job in Chennai and had moved to the metro where she and Vetrimaran worked together.

Nandhini’s family, who is grief-stricken by the entire incident, said they couldn’t believe that Vetrimaran had perpetrated such a crime. Nandhini’s father told DTNext , “My daughter had continued the friendship with Vetrimaran on a humanitarian basis. We, as a family, did not have any problem with that.”

He also said, “If Nandhini had told us there was a problem here, we would have definitely helped her in sorting it out. Being empathetic and supportive cost my daughter’s life.”

The accused, Vetrimaran, is now in judicial custody and has been charged with murder. In the meantime, the police also released Nandhini’s body to her family on Sunday. Nandhini’s family is inconsolable. One of them was even quoted as saying, “We saw her burnt body with hands and legs being chained. Is that a way to die? It’s difficult to come to terms with the way her life ended in such a cruel way.”

Accused murdered Chennai techie out of jealousy, say police

Preliminary probe has revealed that vetrimaran was apparently jealous that the victim was getting close to another colleague, said a police officer.

CHENNAI: A Madurai woman, was chained, slashed with a blade and set afire allegedly by her childhood friend as he was “jealous that she was talking to other men”, police said on Monday.

R Nandini, a 26-year-old software engineer, was assaulted and set on fire by Vetrimaran, said police

R Nandini, a 26-year-old software engineer, was assaulted and set on fire by Vetrimaran, who had undergone a sex reassignment surgery.

The 27-year-old accused — known as Pandi Maheshwari before the surgery — and the victim went to an all-girls school together and worked at the same company in Chennai.

The accused has told police he went through a sex reassignment surgery with the purpose of marrying the woman, officers said.

Preliminary probe has revealed that Vetrimaran was apparently jealous that the victim was getting close to another colleague, said a police officer, asking not to be named. “The accused underwent a sex reassignment surgery a few months ago with the sole reason to marry the victim but she did not reciprocate his feelings,” the officer added.

On the night of December 23, Vetrimaran called Nandini for a meeting to a secluded place in Ponmar, located about 15 km away from Chennai, on the pretext of giving her a birthday surprise.

The victim was later chained up and slashed with a blade, before she was set on fire.

Locals found Nandini with burn injuries and informed police, who rushed her to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, an officer familiar with the matter said.

“When we reached the spot, she was conscious and gave us Vetrimaran’s contact number... Initially, he came to identify Nandini but later disappeared,” the officer added.

He was nabbed on Sunday from Tambaram and produced before a local court which remanded him in 15-day judicial custody.

Another senior police officer familiar with the probe said: “Vetrimaran became over-possessive when he noticed Nandini talking to other male friends. The two also had an argument over this.” “He has confessed to the murder and showed us the weapons and the vehicle he used to commit the murder,” the officer added.

TN: Transgender friend kills woman after she rejected advances

Police investigations reveal that the accused, vetrimaran, playfully suggested binding the victim's legs and hands, assuring her it was 'just for fun'. then, he slashed her throat and burned her alive.

Photo of News Desk

A 25-year-old software engineer was chained and burnt alive by her transgender friend in Chennai, police said.

The victim, Nandhini, was murdered on the eve of her birthday (December 23) by 26-year-old accused, who was identified as Vetrimaran, at Thalambur near Kelambakkam. Born as Pandi Maheshwari, Vetrimaran underwent a sex reassignment surgery after finishing MBA.

A sex reassignment surgery is a medical procedure that changes a person’s physical characteristics from one gender to another, aligning their physical appearance with their gender identity.

Nandhini and Vetrimaran studied in the same girls’ school in Madurai and were close friends, a Times of India report quoted police. They kept in touch even after Vetrimaran’s sex-change surgery.

After completing her studies, Nandhini started working in a software company in Chennai. She was staying with her uncle. During the period, Vetrimaran developed feelings for Nandhini, which was rejected by the latter. However, the two remained friends.

Murder fueled by rejection

Police investigations reveal that on December 23, the eve of her birthday, Nandhini met Vetrimaran for a few hours. During that period, he reportedly bought her new clothes, took her to an orphanage near Tambaram, and made a donation there, Outlook reported.

He then offered to drop Nandhini home. While on their way back, Vetrimaran requested a few photos, which she accepted. Playfully, he suggested binding her legs and hands, assuring her it was ‘just for fun’.

Subsequently, Vetrimaran slashed her neck with a sharp object and then proceeded to burn her alive. As she called for help, he fled the spot.

Her screams attracted passersby who rescued her and immediately took her to the government hospital in Chromepet. However, she succumbed to her injuries.

Vetrimaran was arrested the following day. Confessing the murder, Vetrimaran said he was upset by Nandhini’s rejection. He had undergone the sex change at a private hospital, but Nandhini told him they had no future together, police said.

A case has been filed and further investigations are on. Vetrimaran is currently under police custody.

Woman techie tortured, burnt alive on birthday eve by classmate who underwent sex change to marry her

vetrimaran alias pandi maheswari

Chennai: On the eve of her birthday, a 24-year-old software engineer in Tamil Nadu was chained, slashed with a blade and burnt alive by her former classmate who had undergone a sex change operation to marry her, police said today.

The disturbing incident unfolded in Thalambur near Kelambakkam, a quiet southern suburb of Chennai. According to police reports, 26-year-old MBA graduate Vetrimaran, formerly known alias Pandi Maheswari, under the guise of a birthday surprise, blindfolded 24-year-old R Nandhini and subjected her to an unimaginable ordeal involving chains and petrol.

The suspect and the victim, Nandhini, shared a history of friendship, having studied together in the same girls' school in Madurai. The arrest followed Nandhini's rejection of Vetrimaran's proposals, leading to strained relations between the two. Despite the fallout, they maintained some degree of communication over time, sources said.

Eight months prior to the murder, Nandhini, after completing her BSc degree in information technology(IT), secured a job in Chennai and was living with her uncle in the city. On the fateful day, Vetrimaran contacted Nandhini, inviting her to spend time together.

During their meeting, the transsexual man gave her new clothes and took her to an orphanage near Tambaram, where they made a donation. The seemingly normal outing took a horrific turn later on.

He suggested that he will drop her home and stopped at a remote Ponmar location on the way.Vetrimaran requested Nandhini to pose for photos in the lonely region. He then took the chains from his bike and tied her hands and feet while assuring her it was just for fun. Despite her protests, he later refused to release Nandhini. He used a knife to slit her neck and arms before pouring a bottle of fuel on her and setting her on fire.

Vetrimaran fled the crime scene after committing the heinous act. Locals discovered Nandhini, fighting for her life, and immediately contacted the police. In a desperate attempt to save herself, she provided Vetrimaran's contact number to those who found her.

When the police reached out to him, Vetrimaran shamelessly arrived at the scene, falsely claiming that Nandhini was his friend. He accompanied the police and locals to transport Nandhini to Chromepet's government hospital, all while concealing his monstrous actions. Nandhini succumbed to her severe injuries late on Saturday. However, by the time of her death, Vetrimaran had already disappeared. He was then tracked down and apprehended by the police on Sunday.

In his statement to the police, he revealed that his horrific actions were driven by resentment over Nandhini's refusal to enter into a relationship with him. Despite undergoing a sex-change process in the past, Nandhini had made it clear that they had no future together.

According to the police, she had just grown close to one of her colleagues, which prompted Vetrimaran to murder her. The accused is in judicial detention, and an inquiry is currently underway.

Kasaragod Quran teacher names the next Skoda SUV Kylaq, to be first owner in 2025

vetrimaran alias pandi maheswari

Kasaragod: Mohammed Ziyad, a 24-year-old Quran teacher from Kasaragod, Kerala, will be the first owner of Skoda's upcoming SUV, set to launch in 2025. The reason? He named the vehicle "Kylaq." Skoda India revealed the winning name and its creator in an Instagram post, congratulating Ziyad and announcing that he would receive the first model of the sub-four-metre car.

"Congratulations to Mr. Mohammed Ziyad from Kerala for winning the all-new #SkodaKylaq. He will be the first owner when it is launched next year," Skoda India wrote. The contest saw participation from around 200,000 people, all vying for the chance to name the new SUV. In another post, the company explained that "Kylaq" is derived from Sanskrit, meaning "crystal," and is inspired by the word "peak."

Ziyad, who holds an English degree from the University of Calicut, has been teaching at the Najath Quran Academy in Kasaragod for over two years. Despite his modest background, Ziyad’s dream of owning a car seemed out of reach—until this opportunity arose. "I don’t have a passion for cars, but I’ve always wanted to own one. However, my family’s financial situation didn’t allow it," Ziyad shared.

When he encountered Skoda's contest to name their next SUV in February, Ziyad decided to give it a try. The only requirement was that the name should start with a "K" and end with a "Q."

"I spent several days thinking it over, jotting down potential names, and eventually settled on 'Kylaq,'" Ziyad explained. His journey in education also includes a seven-year Islamic studies program at al Marjan Institute for Hafazath al Quran in Malappuram district and a one-year Islamic degree at Jamia Yamaniyya Arabic College in Kozhikode.

How wife’s reel video obsession led to brutal murder by temple staff just 8 months into marriage in Udupi

reelvideo.jpg

Udupi: What began as a new chapter filled with promise and dreams ended in unthinkable tragedy on Friday night in Karkada, near Saligrama in Brahmavara taluk of Udupi district. Jayashree, a 31-year-old woman who had hoped for a fresh start after her first husband's death, was found dead, allegedly at the hands of her second husband, Kiran Upadhya.

Jayashree, originally from Donagapura in Bidar, was married to Kiran, 41, an assistant cook in temples and a resident of Gundmi, Sastan. The couple had tied the knot just eight months ago, seemingly looking forward to building a life together. However, beneath the surface, their relationship was fraught with tension and conflict.

Jayashree was reportedly passionate about creating reel videos for social media. Her videos often featured herself, and sometimes, her husband. To the outside world, these clips portrayed a loving and playful couple, but behind the camera, the couple struggled with growing disagreements and frustrations.

Kiran found it increasingly difficult to cope with Jayashree's online habits. Her addiction to making videos was accompanied by an equally consuming passion for online shopping, which drained the couple's finances. She would often spend large sums on items they didn't need, adding to the financial strain on their young marriage. Jayashree also dreamed of a life filled with luxury—a big house, a fancy car, and more—demands that Kiran, with his modest income, could not meet.

Coming from a family of temple priests in the Panchamasali community of Bidar, Jayashree had seen her share of loss and hardship. Her first husband, a man from Mangaluru, had passed away, leaving her to rebuild her life. In Kiran, she saw a chance at stability, but their dreams soon turned to dust. After just two months of marriage, they moved into a rented house in Karkada, owned by an acquaintance. It was there that their disagreements over money and material possessions reached a boiling point.

On Thursday night, the situation escalated into a heated argument. In a moment of rage, Kiran allegedly attacked Jayashree with a sickle, ending her life. The landlord, who lived downstairs, was away in Mangaluru, leaving the crime unnoticed until it was too late.

In a state of panic, Kiran tried to cover up what he had done. He initially planned to bury Jayashree's body in a cow dung pit but quickly changed his mind. Desperate, he called friends and relatives, claiming his wife had fallen from the first floor and was unresponsive. Sensing something was amiss, they urged him to take her to the hospital.

At around 5:30 a.m., Kiran called for a Jeevan Mitra ambulance and rushed Jayashree to the government hospital in Udupi. Sadly, it was too late—doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Returning home, Kiran attempted to clean up the evidence of his crime, but by then, the neighbors were suspicious. They noticed his strange behavior and immediately contacted the police. Authorities arrived at the scene, took Kiran into custody, and began their investigation into what had led to such a devastating outcome.

Udupi Additional SP S.T. Siddalingappa, DySP D.T. Prabhu, Brahmavar Circle Inspector Divakara, and other police personnel visited the crime scene to gather evidence. Meanwhile, Jayashree's family, who were expected to arrive in Kota on Saturday, are left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of their loved one.

Locals have since revealed that Kiran's actions were premeditated. He reportedly purchased a new sickle from the local market on Thursday evening and had spoken ill of Jayashree to friends and family in the days leading up to the incident, hinting at a darkness that would soon shatter both their lives.

In the end, what was meant to be a new beginning for Jayashree and Kiran became a heart-wrenching story of a love that could not survive its struggles, leaving behind grief, questions, and an irrevocable loss.

Choreographer arrested for sexually assaulting college girl in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The HSR Layout police in southeastern Bengaluru swiftly arrested a 24-year-old choreographer named Mukeshwaran on charges of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman early on Sunday morning.

Between 1:00 AM and 1:30 AM

The victim, a third-year degree student and daughter of an Army officer, was returning to her flat in Chandapura near Anekal after attending a dinner party in Koramangala. She was driving a friend's car when it collided with two auto-rickshaws near Nexus Mall. An altercation ensued between her friend and the auto drivers.

Shortly After the Incident:

Anxious over the collision, the woman stopped an auto-rickshaw and got into it. After a while, she got down and sought a ride from the suspect, Mukeshwaran, who was on a two-wheeler.

Detour and Assault:

Instead of taking the woman to her designated location, Mukeshwaran took a detour to a deserted area near Hosur Main Road, where he sexually assaulted her.

Emergency Alert:

During the assault, one of the victim's friends received an emergency message and location from the victim's phone, which then became unreachable. The friend quickly informed another friend, who reached the location and found the victim in distress.

Suspect Flees:

Another friend of the victim also arrived at the scene. Both friends reported seeing an unknown man, later identified as Mukeshwaran, wearing only trousers with visible scratch marks on his face. The suspect fled when confronted.

Immediate Police Response:

Sarah Fathima, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast), said that five teams were formed to trace and apprehend the suspect. The arrest was made based on the victim's statement and CCTV footage analysis. Fathima noted that the suspect had been intoxicated and partied that night but had no prior criminal record.

Ongoing Investigation:

The police are continuing their investigation, and the victim is reported to be in stable condition.

'Incensed' trans man burns alive childhood friend

A transexual man who burnt alive his childhood classmate -- a software engineer -- in a gruesome manner was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, police said on Monday.

vetrimaran alias pandi maheswari

The suspect identified as Vetrimaran, a trans man who had changed his name from Pandi Maheswari, blindfolded, chained and burnt R Nandhini alive, under the pretext of surprising her on her birthday eve on Saturday, at Thalambur near Kelambakkam, Chennai's southern suburb, they said.

The victim, a 25-year-old software engineer from Madurai and working in Chennai, did not suspect his intentions, as Vetrimaran said he wanted to surprise Nandhini ahead of her birthday.

Nandhini has been residing at her relative's house in Chennai.

Police indicated that 'being empathetic' appears to have cost Nandhini her life.

Vetrimaran made her believe that he would give her a surprise on her birthday eve on Saturday and convinced her to accompany him to a deserted place in Ponmar in Thalambur police limits.

He then blindfolded her and chained her hands and feet as a 'surprise', slashed her neck and wrists, emptied a can of petrol and torched her before fleeing from the spot, said police.

Hearing her cries, a few passers-by alerted the police.

However, before she was rushed in an ambulance to the Chromepet Government hospital for treatment, Nandhini gave out the mobile number of Vetrimaran, police said.

"Initially, he came to identify Nandhini and had accompanied her to the GH but later disappeared," a police officer said.

He was however, nabbed on Sunday and later remanded in judicial custody.

Investigation revealed that Pandi Maheswari, 26, studied with Nandhini at a school in Madurai.

Nandhini had continued her friendship on humanitarian grounds even after Maheswari changed her name to Vetrimaran.

The two had worked in a company in Chennai, they added.

He was in regular touch with her. He got incensed when she started avoiding him.

"He became over-possessive when he noticed her talking to other male friends. There was an argument between the two over this," said a police official.

On December 23, on Nandhini's birthday eve, Vetrimaran called her to say that he would not quarrel with her and asked her to meet him as he planned 'a surprise' for her birthday.

After presenting her new clothes, he took her to an orphanage near Tambaram and made a donation. On the way home, he took Nandhini to Ponmar where he blindfolded her, tied her limbs, inflicted cut injuries on her neck and wrists, doused petrol and torched her, and fled.

After completing her studies, Nandhini moved to Chennai and got employed in a software firm and was residing at her paternal uncle's home in Kannagi Nagar in Chennai.

While Vetrimaran, residing at Mappedu was in regular touch with her.

"Had Nandhini told us there was a problem then we would have helped her. Being empathetic cost Nandhini her life," her father said.

Her elder sister said the family got a call from the police saying her sister had been set afire and that she was dead.

On Sunday evening, the police handed over Nandhini's body to her family on her birthday.

A transexual man who burnt alive his childhood classmate — a software engineer — in a gruesome manner was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, the police said on Monday, 25 December.

The suspect, identified as Vetrimaran, a trans man who had changed his name from Pandi Maheswari, blindfolded, chained and burnt R Nandhini alive, under the pretext of surprising her on her birthday eve on Saturday, 23 December, at Thalambur near Kelambakkam, Chennai’s southern suburb, they said.

The victim, a 25-year-old software engineer from Madurai working in Chennai, did not suspect his intentions, as Vetrimaran said he wanted to surprise Nandhini ahead of her birthday.

Gowtham Goyal, DCP Pallikaranai, told South First , “The victim had an affair with the person before she found he is a trans person. Thereafter, she rejected him and entered a relationship with another man. So, the murder plot is based on revenge.”

As per reports, Vetrimaran had become possessive of Nandhini and did not want her to have other male friends. However, the woman did not adhere to his wishes due to which he had been quarrelling with her over the past six to eight months.

The incident

On Saturday, which was the eve of Nandhini’s birthday, Vetrimaran contacted Nandhini. He said he would not argue with her and asked her to meet him once as he had planned a surprise for her birthday.

“Around 7:00 to 7:15 pm, he took her to a vacant plot near Ponmar Road. As per the preliminary investigation, he would have blindfolded her under the pretext of presenting a gift. After that, he chained her arms and legs before cutting her wrists and ankles. After that, he poured kerosene on her and left her immolating,” the DCP said.

He added that a few years ago Vetrimaran returned to Chennai from Bengaluru and underwent a gender affirmation procedure. “We believe that since then the lady rejected her as a partner.”

Hearing her cries, a few passers-by alerted the police. However, before she was rushed in an ambulance to the Chromepet Government hospital for treatment, Nandhini gave out the mobile number of Vetrimaran, police said.

“Initially, he came to identify Nandhini and had accompanied her to the GH but later disappeared,” a police officer told PTI. He was, however, nabbed on Sunday, 24 December, and later remanded in judicial custody.

‘Being empathetic cost her life’

“Had Nandhini told us there was a problem then we would have helped her. Being empathetic cost Nandhini her life,” her father told PTI.

Her elder sister said the family got a call from the police saying her sister had been set afire and that she was dead.

According to PTI Nandhini has been residing at her relative’s house in Chennai.

Investigation revealed that Pandi Maheswari, 26, studied with Nandhini at a school in Madurai.

Nandhini had continued her friendship on humanitarian grounds even after Maheswari changed their name to Vetrimaran.

The two had worked in a company in Chennai, they added.

On Sunday evening, the police handed over Nandhini’s body to her family on her birthday.
