Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

boothbay harbor yacht club photos

The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club (BHYC) is aglow with holiday spirit as December unfolds, revealing a captivating tapestry of festive decorations, leadership transitions, and exciting developments. Against the picturesque backdrop of Boothbay Harbor, the club is gearing up for the upcoming 2024 season with renewed energy and a touch of maritime magic.

Festive Illumination on the Waterfront

The BHYC is a beacon of light this holiday season, with Christmas decorations adorning the club's landscape. The junior program dock stands out with a radiant glow, casting a warm ambiance over the waterfront. Adding to the festive spectacle, two Opti boats have been transformed into twinkling marvels, captivating onlookers with their creative and colorful displays. The shimmering lights along Route 27 reflect the club's commitment to spreading joy and creating memorable experiences for members and passing traffic.

New Faces Charting New Courses

Change is afoot at BHYC, as the club welcomes three new board members into its fold. Bill Hunt, Jen Baker, and Sarah Clark bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to the table, stepping into the roles previously held by Don Tomlin, Sharma Schacknow, and Greg Shea. This injection of new leadership promises exciting opportunities and a dynamic vision for the future of the club.

BHYC is also seeing changes in key leadership positions.  Scott Blake has been elected as the new Rear Commodore, succeeding Jon Dunsford.  Marion Flores assumes the role of Treasurer, taking over from Kitty Chapman.  Notably, Commodore Jeff Long, Vice Commodore Charlie Cochrane, Secretary Sandi Hakanson, and Finance Committee Chair Jason Denby will continue their dedicated service for another year, providing stability and expertise as the club sets sail into the new season.

Clubhouse Winterization and Renovations

While winter has settled in, the BHYC clubhouse is far from dormant.  It has been meticulously winterized and stands ready to embrace the challenges and excitement of the upcoming 2024 season. Several renovation projects are currently underway, enhancing the club's facilities and ensuring a comfortable and welcoming environment for all members, new and existing.  For more information about the Club and becoming a member, visit our website www.bhyc.net .

Achieving Victory on the Waters

The Boothbay Region Sailing Club celebrated a triumphant conclusion to their season, showcasing their prowess on the waters with a collaborative spirit that extended beyond the immediate Boothbay region.  The team, comprised of eighteen C420 and four Optimist sailors, not only from Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor but also from Edgcomb, Alna, Bremen, Dresden, Bristol, and Damariscotta, sailed their way to success in regional competitions.

"I am incredibly proud of our team's accomplishments this season. The dedication and hard work of each sailor, along with the support from our community, have truly made this a successful year for the Boothbay Region Sailing Club," remarked Chris Liberti, head coach of the team.

The team's success serves as a testament to the value of community collaboration and the importance of fostering a love for sailing among the youth.  As the season comes to a close, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and its surrounding communities celebrate not only the victories on the water but also the bonds forged among students from various towns.

Ship's Store: A Treasure Trove of Maritime Merchandise

Under the watchful eye of Abby Smith, the Ship's store is undergoing a transformation. Members can expect a fresh selection of items that showcase the spirit of BHYC.  The store is set to become a hub of activity, offering a curated collection of merchandise that combines functionality with a touch of maritime flair.  The Ship’s Store is open year-round and has relocated into the Sailing and Education Center for the off-season.

As Boothbay Harbor enters the winter months, the Yacht Club stands as a beacon of community, tradition, and progress.  With its festive decorations, new leadership, and commitment to excellence, the BHYC invites members and visitors alike to share in the joy of the holiday season and look forward to the adventures that lie ahead on the open waters of 2024.

Classic Yacht Challenge Series Regatta

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge

July 23 - 25, 2021 - Boothbay, ME

Division Region:

Number of Races: 4

boothbay harbor yacht club photos

Great racing and social events in Boothbay Harbor upcoming in July. The BHYC Regatta is expanding traditional PHRF handicap racing by adding several divisions of Classic Yachts. This major addition recognizes the large fleet of Classic yachts in New England and especially on the coast of Maine and their popularity. Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club is coordinating with the Classic Yacht Owners Association (CYOA), Friendship Sloop Association, Boothbay Harbor One Design Association among several others in adding Classics to the 47th year of this historic regatta. Combining Classics with the traditional large PHRF and One Design fleets will make for an exciting experience. The timing of July 24th and 25th allows for participation in GMORA and Classic signature events later in July and August. Presented by Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club in conjunction with the marine community and support from key sponsors, Hodgdon Yachts, Bristol Marine’s Shipyard at Boothbay Harbor and many others, the weekend will offer competitive racing and the beauty of sail on Booth Bay.

Heading north past Fisherman’s and Squirrel Islands, you’ll find the buzzing metropolis of Boothbay Harbor, where you’ll be well-served by several marinas and a big shopping center where you can find all kinds of delights. Many cruisers find the range and depth of services a welcome choice after visiting remote anchorages; a few find the pace frenetic when the goal of a vacation is to unwind.

Approach & Cautions

Photo: Cuckhold Light by Ashley Frill, Flickr

Approaching from south, west, or east is easy and straightforward. Just be aware of heavy traffic in the vicinity — fishing vessels, yachts, ferries, and daysailors abound.

If you’re arriving across from Muscongas Bay or Damariscotta River just to the east of Boothbay, it may be easier to leave Fisherman’s Island to port between it and Ocean Point. There are 3 red nuns inside Fisherman’s, which should be left to starboard. Leave Squirrel, Burnt, and Mouse Islands to port and enter Boothbay Harbor on the east side.

You can also approach Boothbay easily from either the Sheepscot River to the west via Townsend Gut or from seaward, leaving Fisherman’s Island to starboard and passing to either side of Squirrel Island, observing red lighted buoy #4. Head for red lighted buoy #8 off Tumbler Island, leaving Burnt Island and its lighthouse and Mouse Island to port. Leave the lighted green buoy #1A to port off the end of McFarland Island, and the harbor is a straight shot ahead of you.

Docking, Anchorages, or Moorings

Just to the right as you enter the harbor, the first marina is Carousel , which usually has plenty of guest moorings available, plus showers, fuel, water, and a restaurant. It’s not a far hike from Carousel into town, where your kids will go wild with the temptations of ice cream, souvenirs, and anything one can imagine in a Maine summer revelry. Call Carousel Marina (207-633-2922) or via VHF Ch 9; alternatively, the next marina on the right is Brown’s Wharf , Ch 9 & 16 (207-633-5440). Other marinas offer dockage and moorings, but we do not have recent experience with them. A complete list is provided at the bottom of this page. Expect price increases in 2022 versus prior years.

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, on the far left (port) side of Boothbay Harbor, welcomes visitors, offering rental moorings at $50 per night for boats up to 60 feet, including launch service, Wi-Fi, showers, laundry, tennis, bar, and dining room access — all described via the link above.

Limited anchorage can be found in 24 to 42 feet in the outer harbor northward of Tumbler Island and off McKown Point. The inner harbor has depths of 6 to 24 feet. Megayachts anchor south of Tumbler Island between Mouse Island and Spruce Point.

The Boothbay Harbor Harbormaster is Rob Leavitt at 207-380-7602. Peter Ripley covers Boothbay and East Boothbay; 207-380-7283 .

MORE BOAT AMENITIES

There are many excellent boatyards in the Boothbay area. One known to us is Hodgdon Yacht Services at Southport Island   (207) 633-2970 . It is located in Ebencook Harbor (described below), a modest distance by water from Boothbay.

Getting Ashore

It’s easy to use the dinghy dock around the back of the main dockage at Carousel Marina or head up to the inner harbor, and you’ll find the public landing (aka Town Dock) just south of Fisherman’s Wharf.

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club allows the use of its docks to mooring customers along with launch service.

The Boothbay Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a must-see with its giant troll statues created from recycled wood by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Amazing! And the Butterfly and Moth House are gothic-style buildings with caterpillars and butterflies from all over New England.

Just to the west of Townsend Gut and a short hop to the south around the top of Southport Island, you’ll find Ebenecook Harbor, which leads you into quaint and cozy Love Cove, a favorite cruiser’s anchorage just around the corner from the Hodgdon Yacht Services Southport Boatyard, a good pit-stop much less hectic than Boothbay proper. You can often find empty moorings in Love Cove, and anchoring is easy.

Other Nearby Anchorages – East Boothbay/South Bristol & Christmas Cove — all close by.
