The Régates Royales: Cannes’ Most Prestigious Sailing Regatta
by Tammy | Aug 9, 2023
By Karen Hockney ONBOARD ONLINE 9 Aug 2023
When it comes to regattas, they don’t get much more prestigious or highly regarded than the Régates Royales.
Taking place this year from 24-30 September, it features the European Championship of the 12 MJI – the legendary yachts which competed in the America’s Cup between 1958 and 1987.
A true highlight of the annual classic sailing calendar, the Régates Royales attracts every level from experienced racers to regular, passionate sailors who all share the dream of competing in this incredible event.
A chequered history
To understand its popularity, you need to look back at its rich and chequered history. Kicking off at the end of the roaring 1920s, the Régates Royales enjoyed a golden age for a decade, with the Danish king winning two races and coming second in another before the event sank into oblivion, becoming largely forgotten in the 1960s.
Cannes’ nautical director Jean-Pierre Odéro resurrected the regatta in 1978, with 6 and 8 MJI racing again, continuing the closely forged bond between the city of Cannes and yachting.
In 1994, classic yachts finally entered the arena and the preservation of the passion and heritage of classical yacht craft became a fundamental part of the event’s raison d’être. Jean-Pierre Odéro remained a guiding force of the Régates Royale until his death in 2003.
A world-class sailing event
Today, as the 45 th edition, which is partnered by the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, approaches, it’s clear that enthusiasm for this iconic sailing tradition continues unabated, with more than 150 of the world’s most famous classic yachts expected to attend.
“Régates Royales is a fantastic event on the water and probably the biggest classic yacht regatta in the world,” says Thomas Bunodière, Marine Operations Director at IGY’s Vieux-Port of Cannes, who is helping to coordinate the regatta.
“This event is one of the rare opportunities where traditional yachts, pieces of history, race together. Crossing each other on the water are yachts designed by William Fife and previous legends of America’s Cup. It’s a real part of sailing history.”
Cannes: a yacht hub par excellence
The annual event gives an additional buzz to the already dynamic port where Thomas oversees yachting and leisure operations, and which has become a welcoming hub for cruise passengers, local fishermen, boaters and industry professionals. Early autumn is the optimal period weather-wise for a regatta on the Côte d’Azur, according to Thomas.
“The atmosphere on the dock is special with all the sailors interacting with great conviviality. I sail regularly in the bay of Cannes and have also had the chance to sail during previous Régates Royales.
“This bay offers some fantastic sailing conditions in September with warm water and various wind conditions. You can have light winds, summer breezes, strong westerly winds called ‘mistral’ or south-easterly conditions generated by a low on the Genoa Gulf. All these wind conditions combined with the landscape of the Estérel mountain range are the perfect cocktail for tactical games on the water.
“When you participate in a regatta, it’s always great to have the same event-identity year to year and Cannes’ Régates Royales has its own identity and atmosphere which is beloved by sailors. It’s an historical event and an unmissable date on the city calendar of Cannes. It’s also a key regatta at the end of the sailing season.”
Art, cocktails and talent
This year’s official street art inspired poster has been designed by French artist and filmmaker Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr Brainwash. “One of the highlights of the Régates Royales is to combine art and culture with sailing,” says Jean François Cutugno, President of the Yacht Club de Cannes. “It’s in the DNA of the event and the town. We like to ask a great artist to design the official poster and it’s a great honour to have Mr Brainwash this year.
“The 45 th Régates Royales is shaping up to be a great event, with an exceptional line-up. But I’m not forgetting that the Yacht Club continues to train future champions while supporting young crews of the highest calibre, such as Matisse Pacaud and Lucie de Gennes, world youth champions from Cannes who have just won the European Championship in Poland.”
A celebratory Régates Royales Special cocktail has been created by the Carlton Hotel, comprising curaçao, gin, lemon juice and lavender syrup, with General Manager Carlo Stragiotto expressing his joy at being part of the historic proceedings. “We are delighted to be joining forces with the Yacht Club de Cannes, further reinforcing Cannes’ status as a must-see destination for yachting enthusiasts,” he says.
This year’s event looks set to be one of the most eagerly anticipated and successful yet, with Thomas adding: “The Cannes Régates Royales 2023 edition seems to already be one of the most popular editions. It will for sure have more than 100 yachts up to 55m, including a 12 MJI European Championship which will be a peak event within the regatta. These sailing boats are just legends on the water!
“I’m not sure I will be able to race this year but I would love to join a day race. A day on the water is always a great day.”
With around 1,000 sailors representing 10 nationalities taking part and approximately 5,000 visitors a day on site in Cannes during regatta week, Jean Francois Cutugno is keen to emphasise the most impressive and memorable aspect of the Régates Royales.
“It’s the history and the fact that it is a real competition unanimously appreciated by the competitors,” he says. “Our competitors don’t offer courses and organization of the same quality; they’re more focused on ‘show’.”

classic sailing yacht
In 1926, William Fife III launched the 24.7m cutter Hallowe’en . According to William Fife III, designer of a number of classic yachts still racing today, “ Hallowe’en is the perfect gentleman’s yacht. She is a jewel”. When gaff-rigged racers dominated various regattas, he chose to rig the yacht as a low-aspect Bermudan cutter. Her mast and boom heights continued to change over the years, and eventually, she was transformed into a yawl.
Under new owner Alfred Larsen, a Norwegian industrialist, she returned to the Atlantic after racing in the Mediterranean for several years. The yacht became the official yacht of the Royal Norwegian Racing Club and was helmed by Prince Olaf numerous times. Following her transatlantic journey in 1938, she vanished from radar screens. She was further renamed Cotton Blosson IV by Walter Wheeler and continued her history of ocean racing before eventually being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in New Port, Rhode Island, for a much-needed refit. As a result of funds drying up in New Port, Hallowe’en was in need of a new owner and returned to the Mediterranean when Elizabeth Meyer (owner of J-Class Endeavour) assisted in finding a buyer.
From 1988 to 1991, Hallowe’en was carefully restored to her original lines at the Classic Boat Works in Newport, Rhode Island. All sawn English Oak frames were carefully repaired or replaced, and the planking was secured with bronze fasteners from the museum. Having undergone some major changes in France in 1994, she underwent another transformation in 1998, perhaps looking better now than ever. After several refits (and owners), she is now available for charter in the Mediterranean, where she races competitively in the classic regatta circuit spanning France, Corsica, Spain, and Italy. The latest refit was performed in 2009 by Fairlie Restorations on the Hamble river, UK.
Classic Charme
Hallowe’en is undoubtedly one of the most stunning yachts on the regatta scene. This fast and excellent Fife-built cruiser/racer is highly recommended for charter by anyone seeking a vintage wooden sailing yacht of the highest quality. In addition to being one of the most beautiful Fifes ever built, she is able to make fast passages across the oceans and still wins classic regattas. With her original mahogany interior, Hallowe’en is one of the finest vintage racing yachts in the Mediterranean.

From Nice airport you can get a shuttle bus direct to Cannes, or buses 200 and 210. If you prefer taking a cab, a taxi will cost from around €55, depending on the number of passengers.
If money is no object and you want to travel in style, then book a helicopter with Azur Hélicoptère, which will take you from Nice to Cannes in around seven minutes and for just over €500.

Guide to the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023
- Silvia Pretto
- August 2, 2023
For over 45 years, the Cannes Yachting Festival has been the first major international event of the boating season, as well as the Europe’s largest in-water boat show.
The 2023 6-day edition, which will be held from September 12-17, will certainly enchant the 55 thousand visitors expected with more than 650 boats on display, ranging from 5 to 50 meters, in response to the most varied owner needs.
A major new feature of the 2023 event is the creation of “The small boat area”, an area afloat in the Vieux Port, which will accommodate smaller boats , from 8 to 11 meters in length. The area will accommodate over 50 boats , once again offering the most eclectic offer possible, satisfying the demands of many exhibitors and owners, and also broadening the target audience.
“Thanks to the renewed confidence of our exhibitors, this 2023 edition is looking very good with similar forecasts to the previous year, i.e. 600 exhibitors, more than 650 boats and 140 previews – explains Sylvie Ernoult, Director of the Yachting Festival , before adding – Once again this year, our visitors will enjoy discovering some real gems in-water and on land, boats of all sizes and types, equipped with “traditional” or carbon-free engines with the first on-board electric, hybrid or hydrogen power systems. As is the case every year, all our teams are mobilised on a daily basis to offer a memorable experience to our exhibitors and visitors”.
This year’s edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival will host a large number of word premieres , the latest nautical equipment and numerous innovations, divided according to the reference activities of each port. Here is the guide to all the exhibition areas of this year’s event.
The Vieux Port: the world of motorboats
The Vieux Port, one of the oldest on the Côte d’Azur, plays host each year to modern and classic motor units presented by the world’s leading shipyards. This area focuses entirely on the motorboat industry and has an exceptional variety of units totaling almost 500 boats in water and on land, from small boats from 5 meters upwards to the largest prestigious superyachts exceeding 45 meters.
The Jetée area will welcome the major international shipyards and unveil their latest innovations presented as world previews. Boats above 22 metres will be exhibited here.
The Super Yachts Extension comprises three floating barges and will feature some thirty of the largest motor super yachts of over 24 metres exhibited at the Vieux Port.
The Quai Saint-Pierre will exhibit luxury day-boats and powerboats ranging from 10 to 23 metres. Other types of model medium-sized open boats and fly-bridge boats will also feature on this quay, standing out for their design, power and elegance.
Installed since 2021, opposite the Pantiero and the Quai Saint-Pierre, around fifty semi-rigid 10 to 20 metre boats will be on show in the middle of the water body; there is also an area showcasing some fifteen electric and hybrid boats.
Port Canto: the realm of sailing
The Port Canto, located at the end of the Croisette, hosts three distinct areas: The Sailing area installed since 2019 is the biggest global in-water showcase for new super yachts. This magical place hosts over 120 yachts from 10 to 26 metres, including monohulls and multihulls.
Also at the heart of the Sailing area, the “ Start-up Village “, launched in 2021, highlights “smart” start-ups in the marine sector offering breakthrough technologies or services with high added value while protecting the maritime area. These start-ups are creating the future of yachting: yachting that is more powerful, more responsible and more environmentally friendly.
Last but not least, the “Toys” area, established in 2018, takes advantage of the wide areas of this dyke to exhibit on-land an increasingly large selection of sport, fun and nautical activities equipment.
Cannes Yachting Festival: on-land exhibition areas
On land are the exhibition areas dedicated to the marine accessories. The Equipment Village , for example, accommodates the ultimate in electronics, fittings, paints, as well as the essential accessories to maintain your boat from the major international companies.
The Palais des Festivals is home to a large area dedicated to high-end yachting players: shipyards, architects and designers, interior fittings, tourism institutions and marinas, service companies and the Tender area.
Last but not least, the Green Route, starting two years ago (when it was created), is becoming more and more important, giving space to the ecological transition and eco-sustainability issues, which are becoming increasingly relevant in the nautical world. For this reason, the ‘green’ route stretching from one side of the Croisette to the other will be central to addressing the issues of reducing the environmental impact of pleasure boating with boatyards and exhibitors, while also raising the awareness of visitors to take a more eco-sustainable approach to our seas.
While waiting to see what the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 will have in store for us this year, The International Yachting Media as a media partner will keep you up to date with the news and everything about the festival.
