Photo Appears to Capture Path of Bullet Used in Assassination Attempt

Michael Harrigan, a retired F.B.I. special agent, said the image captured by Doug Mills, a New York Times photographer, seems to show a bullet streaking past former President Donald J. Trump.

Follow the latest news on the Trump assassination attempt .

In documenting the Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday afternoon that turned into an attempt on a former president’s life, Doug Mills, a veteran New York Times photographer, appeared to capture the image of a bullet streaking past former President Donald J. Trump’s head.

That is the assessment of Michael Harrigan, a retired F.B.I. special agent who spent 22 years in the bureau.

“It absolutely could be showing the displacement of air due to a projectile,” Mr. Harrigan said in an interview on Saturday night after reviewing the high-resolution images that Mr. Mills filed from the rally. “The angle seems a bit low to have passed through his ear, but not impossible if the gunman fired multiple rounds.”

Simple ballistic math showed that capturing a bullet as Mr. Mills likely did in a photo was possible, Mr. Harrigan said.

Mr. Mills was using a Sony digital camera capable of capturing images at up to 30 frames per second. He took these photos with a shutter speed of 1/8,000th of a second — extremely fast by industry standards.

The other factor is the speed of the bullet from the firearm. On Saturday law enforcement authorities recovered an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle at the scene from a deceased white man they believe was the gunman.

“If the gunman was firing an AR-15-style rifle, the .223-caliber or 5.56-millimeter bullets they use travel at roughly 3,200 feet per second when they leave the weapon’s muzzle,’’ Mr. Harrigan said. “And with a 1/8,000th of a second shutter speed, this would allow the bullet to travel approximately four-tenths of a foot while the shutter is open.”

“Most cameras used to capture images of bullets in flight are using extremely high speed specialty cameras not normally utilized for regular photography, so catching a bullet on a side trajectory as seen in that photo would be a one in a million shot and nearly impossible to catch even if one knew the bullet was coming,” he said.

In Mr. Harrigan’s last assignment, he led the bureau’s firearms training unit and currently works as a consultant in the firearms industry.

“Given the circumstances, if that’s not showing the bullet’s path through the air, I don’t know what else it would be,” he said.

Our Coverage of the Trump Rally Shooting

Security Blind Spots : Even as investigators continue to examine what happened at the Trump rally, it is already clear that there were multiple missed opportunities to stop the gunman  before the situation turned deadly.

The Gunman : In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary , someone who tried to avoid teasing by fellow students.

Secret Service Director : Kimberly Cheatle  returned in 2022 to lead the agency she had served for nearly 30 years. Now, the assassination attempt on Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty .

Fears of What’s Next : Among voters, there is growing anxiety that America’s political divide is nearly beyond repair, and the shooting only made things worse .

Airlines, banks, hospitals and companies worldwide have been hit with a Microsoft outage. FOX Business Gerri Willis with the details.

A major cyber outage has grounded flights and disrupted businesses and media organizations throughout the world.

The technology glitch caused chaos on Friday morning with Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines issuing statements saying that their flight operations had been impacted. Emergency response systems were down at police agencies and healthcare providers in Phoenix, Arizona, forcing some police and ambulance providers to dispatch cars manually, per The Arizona Republic.

Banks and financial services firms from Australia to India and Germany warned customers of disruptions.

In Britain, booking systems used by doctors were offline, multiple reports from medical officials on X said, while Sky News, one of the country's major news broadcasters was off air, apologizing for being unable to transmit live, and soccer club Manchester United said on X that it had to postpone a scheduled release of tickets.

England's National Health Service said Friday it was aware of the global IT outage and that its EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, had been disrupted at a majority of general practitioner's offices.

"The NHS has long standing measures in place to manage the disruption, including using paper patient records and handwritten prescriptions, and the usual phone systems to contact your GP," the NHS said.

"There are also some issues with administrative systems in hospitals that mean staff are having to work manually from paper to manage certain tasks but in the majority of hospitals, care is continuing as normal."

The technology glitch was caused by a faulty update from CrowdStrike, a U.S. cybersecurity technology company based in Texas, in a single content update for Windows hosts.

It resulted in Windows computers and tablets crashing and displaying a blue screen, known informally as the "Blue Screen of Death." Over half of Fortune 500 companies use CrowdStrike software, the firm said in a promotional video this year.

"The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," George Kurtz, the president and CEO of CrowdStrike posted on X. "We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website."

"Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack."

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. shares plummeted 9% Friday, resulting in the stock's worst weekly performance since November 2022.

President Biden was briefed on the global outage on Friday and his administration is communicating with CrowdStrike and impacted entities, according to a White House official.

"His team is engaged across the interagency to get sector by sector updates throughout the day and is standing by to provide assistance as needed," the official said.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement early Friday morning announcing that all flights were paused as they worked through the technology issue. Allegiant Air grounded flights also.

United Airlines' ground stop has been lifted for all airports, an Air Traffic Control System Command Center advisory said.

United earlier said it would resume some flights, but customers can expect schedule disruptions to continue throughout Friday. The airline has issued a waiver to make it easier for customers to change their travel plans via United.com or the United app, a spokesperson said.

American Airlines says it has been able to "safely re-establish our operation."

UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT CATCHES FIRE JUST BEFORE TAKEOFF HALTING ARRIVALS AT CHICAGO O'HARE

The FAA said all flights, regardless of destination, have been affected.  More than 30,000 flights have been delayed as of 12:42 p.m. ET Friday with 5.944 delays within, into or out of the United States, according to data from flightaware.com .

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigigeg told CNBC on Friday that any transportation delays should be "resembling normal" by Saturday.

"The issue has been identified. It’s really a matter of the kind of ripple or cascade effects as they get everything in their networks back to normal," Buttigieg said. "These flights, they run so tightly, so back-to-back that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day."

Airports in Singapore, Hong Kong and India said the outage meant some airlines were having to check in passengers manually.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's busiest, said it was affected, while airline Iberia said it had been operating manually at airports until its electronic check-in counters and online check-ins were reactivated. It said there had been some delays but no flight cancelations.

London Gatwick was also experiencing issues, while Air France-KLM said its operations were also disrupted.

Amazon's cloud computing service warned customers to look out for "connectivity issues and reboots" as a result of the CrowdStrike outage.

AWS services and network connectivity "continue to operate normally," but some "Windows Instances, Windows Workspaces and Appstream Applications" that use CrowdStrike had issues Friday morning, according to a notice on AWS' service dashboard . The company gave customers instructions to restore connectivity.

Shipping services FedEx and UPS also reported disruptions Friday, warning that packages might be delayed while both companies separately work to mitigate the impact of CrowdStrike's outage.

The technology error was separate from a problem Microsoft faced overnight with cloud services, including Microsoft 365 apps such as Teams video conferencing.

Microsoft said via X they were "working on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact in a more expedient fashion" and that they were "observing a positive trend in service availability."

Microsoft says service went down for some customers in the central United States around 6 p.m. ET, "including failures with service management operations and connectivity or availability of services."

They also stated on their services health status page and X that they are "continuing to see an improvement in service availability across multiple Microsoft 365 apps and services. We're closely monitoring our telemetry data to ensure this upward trend continues as our mitigation actions continue to progress."

Officials have not said how long it will take to resolve the stop, but an update is expected later Friday morning.

EXCLUSIVE: BETHEL PARK, Pa. – A former classmate of would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks says the 20-year-old gunman once mocked him over his support of former President Donald Trump and had a general disdain for mainstream politicians across the political aisle.

"I brought up the fact that I'm Hispanic and, you know, I'm for Trump. And he said, 'Well, you're Hispanic, so shouldn't you hate Trump?'" Vincent Taormina told Fox News Digital Tuesday. "No. He's great. He was a great president. He called me stupid – or insinuated that I was stupid."

It happened during a discussion in an English class during the 2016 campaign, he said. Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders were all still in the race.

"He just did not like politicians , especially with the choices that we had," Taormina said. "He did not like our politicians."

SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR: TRUMP RALLY SHOOTER WAS IDENTIFIED AS ‘POTENTIAL PERSON OF SUSPICION’

Taormina that Crooks was usually quiet, except on certain topics that he seemed passionate about, including math and politics. And on those issues, he could be "smug [and] arrogant," he added.

"He did not like our politicians."

"He would just talk, talk and act like he knew everything, especially politics related, and he would say it in a tone that was like, 'I'm better than you,' in a type of way," he said.

He also pushed back on reporting that Crooks was a complete loner. He had a friend group, he said, although it was both small and concerning.

"They were definitely the type, and they did, make threats to shoot up our school," he said.

Although he and other classmates suspected Crooks himself was behind a threat, he said he had no firm proof. But after the threat came in, the future would-be assassin didn't return to school for a few days.

Crooks, 20, killed a 50-year-old father of two named Corey Comperatore , critically wounded David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, according to authorities. He struck the former president in his right ear.

After the rumors began swirling, Crooks' demeanor changed, Taormina said. He got quieter and stopped confronting people about politics.

But he had enough friends, Taormina argued, that someone must've seen a red flag along the line.

"Everybody, anybody who knew him-knew him, should have seen something," he said. "They should have known something was up, and I know it's kind of easy to hide, but people are going to get their affairs in order before they do something that's bold and this drastic, and nobody saw it? And why?"

Authorities have said Crooks had no criminal history and no documented mental illnesses. The murder weapon was purchased legally by his father in 2013.

A federal investigation into his motives and potential help is continuing, with the FBI analyzing his laptop, cellphone and rifle as well as interviewing dozens of witnesses.

RAMSTEIN-MIESENBACH, GERMANY - JUNE 06: A Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multirole combat airplane of the United States Air Force flies over Ramstein Air Base during a day of fighter plane exercises on June 06, 2024 in Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany

MILWAUKEE - It happened two more times on Thursday, July 18. Aircraft flew into airspace in southeast Wisconsin that was restricted because of the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Because of these violations, a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) F-35 aircraft responded twice – at approximately 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday.

Officials said in both cases, the aircraft were approximately 25 nautical miles west of Milwaukee and NORAD F-35 aircraft safely escorted them out of the area.

2 new jets set to join Hurricane Hunters fleet over the next few years

The two new aircraft will be fully modified g550s, built by georgia-based gulfstream aerospace corporation. the first will join the fleet in 2025 and the second will arrive in 2028..

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season begins on Saturday, and forecasters are preparing for what could be an extremely active season. FOX Weather Correspondent Brandy Campbell got an inside look at how hurricane hunters prepare to fly into dangerous hurricanes to gather potentially life-saving information.

Hurricane science will soon experience a boost as the NOAA announced that it will purchase another aircraft to support its forecasts, research and missions.

The aircraft will be a fully modified G550 aircraft, designed to fly fast, for great distances and at a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet, NOAA said.

Its agility allows the aircraft to fly right above hurricanes and tropical cyclones , gathering highly detailed information about the storms.

This information will be used to refine forecasts looking at the track and intensity of hurricanes . Having improved forecasts that are also available earlier in a storm’s lifespan will provide a longer lead time for cities and citizens to prepare for oncoming storms.

"The acquisition of these highly capable aircraft is a major step forward in the recapitalization of NOAA’s aircraft fleet, which forecasters, researchers and decision-makers depend on for life-saving information ," said Vice Adm. (select) Nancy Hann, director of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps and NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations.

HOW 'KERMIT,' 'MISS PIGGY' AND 'GONZO' HUNT DOWN HURRICANES

The G550 will join NOAA’s fleet known as Hurricane Hunters in 2028, NOAA said. It will be the second jet of its kind that the agency ordered, with the first expected to be delivered in 2025.

Both G550s will support the work of other aircraft in the Hurricane Hunters fleet – two Lockheed WP-3D Orion turboprop aircraft. Whereas the G550s have two engines and are capable of flying above hurricanes, the larger Orions have four engines and fly directly into storms to gather data.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

"These new state-of-the-art aircraft will greatly enhance NOAA’s ability to gather data critical to hurricane research and forecasting, atmospheric river research and forecasting, climate studies and other missions," said NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D. "Infrastructure investments like this protect both lives and livelihoods."

See the chilling photo that captures bullet as it flies past Trump

Former president Donald Trump , who said he was hit in the ear by a would-be assassin’s bullet, came within inches of possible death at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday night.

A photo credited to White House Press Corps photographer Doug Mills appears to capture a bullet as it flies past Trump.

A remarkable photo captured by my former White House Press Corps colleague Doug Mills. Zoom in right above President Trump’s shoulder and you’ll see a bullet flying in the air to the right of President Trump’s head following an attempted assassination. pic.twitter.com/FqmLBCytoW — Haraz N. Ghanbari (@HarazGhanbari) July 14, 2024

Trump issued a statement on his Truth Social media site, after the apparent assassination attempt , saying, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong and I heard a whizzing sound of shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania, a monumental failure of one the agency’s core duties.

The gunman, who was killed by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple shots at the stage from an “elevated position outside of the rally venue,” the agency said.

The FBI early Sunday identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa.

Here’s the complete Trump statement:

“I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of law enforcement for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump said. “More importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong and I heard a whizzing sound of shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. God bless America.”

Storm sent debris flying into traffic in Iowa: Video

Debris sent flying during storm in iowa.

Severe winds sent debris flying toward traffic in Windsor Heights, Iowa, on July 15 as a confirmed tornado moved through the region. This video, taken by Kevin Grimes via Storyful, shows the chaos.

WINDSOR HEIGHTS, Iowa (FOX 9) - A storm sent debris flying into traffic in Windsor Heights, Iowa, on Monday as a tornado moved through the region.

Kevin Grimes captured video on his dashcam of the scene while he drove through the storm. Footage of the chaos shows downed trees, damaged street signs, power flashes and captured the sound of tornado sirens.

The video is not associated with the already confirmed tornado in Iowa. The National Weather Service will be conducting a storm survey on Tuesday across parts of the Des Moines metro area in connection to the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area.

Storms in Iowa on Monday snapped trees and utility poles and left people without power. The storms were part of a system that moved through the Midwest, leaving a trail of damage stretching nearly 500 miles from Iowa through Chicago to Indiana, according to FOX Weather .

Deadly derecho causes damage across the Midwest

A deadly and destructive derecho blasted across the Midwest on Monday, packing wind gusts at over 100 mph. Several tornadoes caused damage to communities on the storm's nearly 500 mile long path. FOX 9’s meteorologist Cody Matz has more.

More about this crazy video

FOX 9 Meteorologist Cody Matz watched this video. Here's his take:

"I realize that this video is wild, but it is a perfect example of why the National Weather Service completes damage surveys to determine if damage occurred because of a tornado. While watching the video, focus on the trees on the sides of the road as the car drives along. When the winds start to pick up speed and then, as debris flies around the car, there is very little, if any, change in the overall orientation of how the trees are blowing in the wind. As we all know, tornadoes spin. So, with no apparent evidence of spin in this video, you can't use this video alone to determine whether this was, in fact, a tornado. Now, I'm not saying it wasn't ... this just shows the need for post-storm surveys to confirm damage patterns to see if there was any sort of spin.

"So, if it's not a tornado, then what happened? Well, there could be a few things that can harbor strong straight-line winds. Analyzing Doppler radar data from that time shows the storm was falling apart a little bit as it merged with another storm just to the east. This can lead to rain-cooled air 'falling' out of the storm, leading to fairly brief, very gusty conditions. It's often referred to as a microburst. It could also be what is called a RFD, or Rear Flank Downdraft. As a supercell passes by, winds often surge around the 'backside' of the storm as they're sucked into the updraft. This 'backside surge' can be very strong, with gusts that can easily hit 70mph. This can cause similar scenes to what happens in the video. The National Weather Service is already out surveying the damage and will learn more through the day."
