ACMG launches program for inaugural Australian Commercial Marine Conference

2024 offshore superboat championship return to geelong.

The Superboats return to Geelong, South West of Melbourne for Round Two of their 2024 season. The Offshore Superboat Championship (OSC) is in action on Corio Bay’s natural and impressive amphitheatre, right in the heart of Geelong.

Australian Offshore Powerboat Club Commodore, Antony de Fina said, ”The 30-minute races commence on Saturday March 16 at 1pm with our SuperSport 65 class. Then at 2pm we have SuperSport 85 and Supercat Outboard classes. At 3pm the SuperSport 65 class returns to the track, which roars right past the Wangim Walk wave attenuator that you access of Steampacket Gardens.”

“The SuperSport 85 and Supercat Outboard classes have their first race at 11am on Sunday March 17, followed by the SuperSport 65 class at 12noon, then the final race of the weekend is at 1pm with the SuperSport 85 and Supercat Outboard classes once more. Presentations will follow at 2.30pm right in front of everyone at Steampacket Gardens.”

The Sting from Queensland is utterly unmissable

“Please do come and see the racing that comes right in close to shore from Cunningham Pier to Eastern Beach, and walk past the boats tied to the inside of Wangim Walk, as well as talk with the crews in and around the pit area. Everyone loves racing at Geelong. This is a unique event at a world class venue. Geelong is not just one of the best boat racing venues in Australia, it really stands up globally, too.”

“We get such a welcome at Geelong from everyone. We are very thankful for the support of the City of Greater Geelong and all of the spectators,” concluded de Fina.

Every team is keen to be there, whether it be to reclaim some lost pride after Round One at Wyndham Harbour, or try and stretch out their lead before the travelling show heads to Queensland for the final two rounds in the next few months.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the 2024 season has to be the continued ballooning of the SuperSport 65 class, which is the entrée level to the OSC. Many craft can achieve the 65mph level, but the skill in not going more than one mile per hour over that mark, or face disqualification is what is attracting many powerboaters, fishos and ski racers to this special division.

It is quite possibly the closest action, and the start at 10-deep across the line is something to behold. Hary Bakkr and Shane Paton on board Nut Case are once more right in the mix for season honours, but are also acutely aware that this is a game of total consistency.

Bakkr makes the famous Razorcraft boats, of which one is his race craft, but the team could well be best known for the magnificent Green Army that follows them to each and every venue. Relations and friends adorn the pits and viewing areas. “We just love going past the Green Army along the piers and foreshore. It gives us a little bit of a shiver when we see that. You often see Shaney give them the big fist pump. We just fly past, and I try to give them a wave if I can, and then around we go once more.”

“It is also terrific to have people come into the pits to talk with us after they see our black and lime green boat. This complete interaction is something that Geelong delivers in spades, and we love that. It is incredibly competitive, and when it gets a bit lumpy it really adds yet another dimension to it all,” said Bakkr in closing.

An abundance of cafes and restaurants means your own pit stop is never too far away either, and this too is part of the allure of the Geelong round of the Offshore Superboat Championship. The two open cockpit classes travel at 105 and 137km/h, respiectively. The enclosed Supercat Outboard class with twin 300hp motors on each hull achieve 180 km/h, and are possibly best known for how well they corner, meaning they do not have to wash off a lot of speed as they go around the banana shaped course tucked right in close to the Western end of Corio Bay. Head for the Ferris Wheel and you will be exactly on target.

2023 Offshore Superboat Championship – After the tempest comes the party

2023 Offshore Superboat Championship – After the tempest comes the party

Indeed it did at Geelong. So after the abandonment of racing on the Saturday, it seemed like all the spectators who missed out went home and got reinforcements for the Sunday, so as to literally force the weather gods to let the Geelong Round of the Offshore Superboat Championship get under way. It worked, for many seasoned racers commented on the record number of people who had taken up the many prime vantage points from Steampacket Gardens, all the way to the hill at Eastern Beach.

Ryan Coleman and Steve Jellick continue to make Superbad get faster and faster. In the first race of the day they seemed to find a way to remove the stops on the throttles on the Supercat Extreme, and came down the back straight literally attempting to catch the light right in front of them.

Yet the first time in Superboat history that would await them on return to the quay was when Ryan married Ciarne on board Superbad. Mr and Mrs Coleman and their many friends could not have been happier. Fellow competitors helped in the celebrations, and the gathering of boats around them all added to the spectacle.

Coleman said, “It was all Ciarne’s idea, believe it or not. It was something we threw together not too long ago. I proposed last year, but we were pretty busy finishing off our house that we built together. We weren’t going to do anything big, and then this was like a bit of an idea. It was something just a bit different. A bit of fun, and the boat ties in.”

Jason Kelly and Jesse King had another wonderful day with The Colonel in the Sport 85 Class. Normally, Kelly is on the throttles, but when Andy Taylor could not participate with AMT Racing on Supercat Outboard, it was Kelly who stepped up to race in all four races of the day. This highlights not only the camaraderie of the sport, but also the Kelly family’s commitment to it.

“We all want all of the boats on the water at all times. The more the merrier! There were no dramas. Just a little bit of water in between races, as I ran from boat to boat. I was a bit hungry by the end, however. The conditions were pretty calm, so you were not taking too much of a beating out there, and that helped”, said Kelly.

On swapping from throttles to steering, Kelly showed the focus they are renowned for. “Once you switch on, you switch on, and push through. I didn’t even think twice about it. It was good to be out there racing alongside Dad, which was a bonus.”

“It was unfortunate with the no racing yesterday, but the officials put a lot of work into getting four races away today, which was really good for the spectators.” Jesse King pilots The Colonel and said, “We almost missed our start for the second race, but Jason got on board just in time. Bring on Hervey Bay!”

offshore powerboat racing geelong

The Sport 65 had their biggest fleet to date for the Round at Geelong, which is just tremendous. Going as close as you can to 65mph, but not over might sound easy, but it is really challenging given the constantly varying conditions. Mark and Liam Sutherland of Team Gigglin have given the proverbial Master class in this at both Wyndham Harbour, and now Geelong. Furthermore, they have also displayed the all hands on deck attitude to contributions ashore that get the event away in the first place, and then packed up at the end of it too. Hauling all the anchors from the marker buoys back to the race truck is just one example.

Andrew Pike and Shannon Porter from Slick 21 have been almost identical, doing so many administrative tasks, like distributing all the handheld radios. They only thing they will want to do better is climb over Gigglin and claim top spot in the class. So we wait patiently to see what occurs out on the water next. Like the entire fleet, this Class was particularly glad to see both Mark Swain and Laura Wilson from Risky come out unharmed after an on water accident. No doubt they will be well supported by the Offshore Superboat Championship family.

222 Racing have been the class act of the first two rounds. A well-prepared outfit, which is then piloted so well out on the water, has seen them make every single post a winner in each race to date. The inimitable Peter McGrath said afterwards, but very much looking forward, “Hervey Bay can be a side chop and quite lumpy. You have to have your wits about you, but yes it would be good to continue to do well.”

“The boat’s going extremely well. We’ve done a few little things to it, and it’s making us a lot happier now. It will be good to have all the others (in this class) back racing once more. There are some really, really good boats just sitting there at the moment, and some great competitors, too.”

“After COVID it’s engine parts that are really, really difficult to get, so I can understand their pain. I love Geelong. Always have, and so I was very happy to come down here this time. The crowd’s really close, and that’s what it’s all about.”

It has to be said that Karl Wall and Mike Ratcliffe from The Sting seemed to have their name on just about every trophy when it came to presentation time. This was deserved, for they have had quite the stellar start to the season in the bright yellow Supercat Outboard that seems to corner like it is on rails, and is powered by a pair of amazing, 20-year-old, two-stroke 300hp gems that simply don’t know how to say die.

Wall was very happy to be taking the prized Robert Weir Trophy back to Queensland for 12 months and thought some pictures of it on the back with a cocktail would help his Victorian comrades get over the shock. “We’ll keep it safe for 12 months”, said Wall.

Now the original plan was to go out and do just 40mph, which would have been enough to grab the points. However, their eyes narrowed once out on the water. “Our horns grew, and the plan went out the window. As soon as we see the back of their outboards, we’ve just got to get past them. It’s the rules. We’ve got to do it.”

“We were really lucky, especially in the first race. We were having trim issues and then it came back to us. We worked our way up from fourth to first, which was hard, but fun. The others weren’t backing off, it’s just that they have to skate around the corners with their wider tunnels, whereas we can turn on a dime, picking up, two or three seconds every corner. Yes. It was good for the spectators too, seeing us work our way back through the field. It makes it very, very interesting.”

Mayor Trent Sullivan had a run in the Saracen Supercat Outboard on Friday ahead of racing, and was totally thrilled to be given the opportunity to drive. “I am delighted to welcome some of the country’s best Superboat operators here to Geelong for this event,” Mayor Sullivan said.

“Council has provided support in the past three years to the Australian Offshore Powerboat Club via its Community Event grants program, and this promises to be a brilliant weekend for water sport enthusiasts.”

Commodore of the Australian Offshore Powerboat Club said, Antony de Fina said, “Despite the testing weather of the Saturday, you only have to look at the turnout for Sunday to see why the spectators and racers love our round at Geelong so much. By far it is one of, or perhaps the biggest crowd, we have ever had here. The amount of people on the wave attenuator and up on the hill was spectacular, and yes, we can see that from inside our Supercats.”

“We receive such fantastic support from the people of Geelong that come out and watch us, and the City of Geelong, as well, who really get behind this event. It simply wouldn’t happen without their gracious involvement.”

The Offshore Superboat Championship is very appreciative of the support provided by the City of Geelong, Brandon Hospitality Solutions for the Championship trophies, ODLS Overdimensional Lift and Shift who provided the dedicated crane services, and Razorcraft boats for their support of our Victorian rounds.

Race Director, Russell Embleton, highlighted the importance of key elements that go into making the racing happen. “There are a bunch of volunteers that have no ongoing or day-to-day interest as such in offshore powerboat racing, but they’re just good, decent boaties, and when they’re asked to pitch in, they do through friendships and associations with the people that do race. Every single one of our exclusion zone boats, and rescue craft are Mums, Dads and mates that have pitched in to male the weekend what it was, and done an awesome job.”

“Craig and Steve on the start boat are terrific, as too the divers, and medical officers, all of who think it through, and we are privileged to have them.”

So yes. Many thanks to all of the volunteers, live coverage team, officials and first responders for all that they do to make the event happen and come to life. Special thanks to Patrick Paczkowski and Brendan Mitchell for placing our media team exactly where required in the brilliant, brand new red Cootacraft.

Superboats hit Geelong

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Spectators will be able to enjoy extreme boat racing at speeds up to 240km/h on the Inner Harbour of Corio Bay this weekend as the Superboats come to Geelong.

The second round of the 2023 Offshore Superboat Championship, running from Saturday, March 18 to Sunday, March 19, will feature Offshore Championship races as well Sport 65 and 85 events.

The weekend of racing will conclude on Sunday with a presentation ceremony at Steampacket Gardens at 2.30pm.

Australian Power Boat Association Offshore Council, race director for the championships and driver of the race control truck Russell Embleton said he was looking forward to the Geelong round of the championships.

“The Wyndham Harbour races a few weeks ago did a great job of unearthing some first round gremlins on a number of the Superboats,” Embleton said.

“With ample time between rounds one and two to iron those gremlins out, I’m expecting the calmer, faster waters of Corio Bay in Geelong to really offer up some great Superboat racing.

“With increased numbers at Geelong, spirited and close racing is guaranteed, Geelong’s natural amphitheatre is going to host some memorable racing this weekend!”

AMT Racing throttleman Paul Fowlds said he and teammate Andy Taylor were looking for a better result after round one’s disappointing performance.

“Whilst the team was bitterly disappointed with the round at Wyndham Harbour, we really look forward to the Geelong round, which is undeniably one of the favourites on the circuit,” Fowlds said.

“Our main goal is to get some points back on The Sting. Their boat is running fantastically well, and will be hard to beat.

“It will also be a tough contest with both TCR, and Saracen, who will be just as motivated as we are to get a complete weekend’s racing in.”

Racing commences at 1pm Saturday. Details: superboat.com.au .

With the likes of Maritimo Racing and Pitman Trucks Offshore Racing together with other Supercat Extreme teams expected at Round Three in Hervey Bay, Queensland at the start of May, it was the turn of the Supercat Outboards to take centre stage at Round Two of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships .

As the competitors gathered in the Steam Packet Garden pit area, overlooking the Geelong foreshore, just to the southwest of Melbourne, Saturday’s calm water conditions meant that it was going to be a catamaran benefit day and so it turned out.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

In the Supercat Outboards class AMT took an early lead but it didn’t last long as Antony De Fina and Matt Kelly in Saracen soon got past them and held the lead to take maximum points in the opening race. Meanwhile TCR Offshore suffered mechanical issues but still managed to cross the line in third place, but it would be the last time we would see them out on the water.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Andrew Taylor from AMT Racing said

Today we had a few sparkplug issues and a coil failure which cost us the victory, but we will get that sorted overnight.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Jason Kelly and Jesse King took advantage of the smooth conditions to take victory in the Sport 85 class in the twenty-four-foot Skater The Colonel ahead of the Cootacraft monohull Special Edition driven by Mark Percherzewski.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Mark Sutherland from Team Gigglin said that a fair bit of practice in the off-season, making sure they had their boat set up correctly was the key to them taking an opening day victory in the Sport 65 class. They managed to get past and then just hold off the local Geelong crew of Team Risky with their driver Mark Swain saying that they were learning more about the boat race by race and were looking to find more speed coming out of the turn marks.

Sunday would see another race for the Sport 65 class and two more races, one thirty minutes in length followed by a twenty minute one after the lunch break for the Supercat Outboards and Sport 85 competitors.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Winning the ‘John & Barbara Gilbert Memorial Trophy’ and collecting maximum championship points in the Sport 65 class were the father and son crew of Team Gigglin with Mark Sutherland who praised his son as they crossed the finishing line.

My son Liam has done an excellent job looking out and telling me where everyone else is on the course. It has been a wonderful team effort in the boat, plus the ‘young bull’ has spent the weekend trying to keep the ‘old bull’ calm.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

In the Sport 85 class The Colonel looked to be on course for three straight victories in Geelong after they crossed the finish line in first place on Sunday morning, but the crew had noticed a mechanical issue as they pulled off the course.

Jason Kelly said

We came across an issue on the last lap, but we still managed to get the Skater across the line, unfortunately though we couldn’t fix the problem before the third race. We both decided to give it a crack, but we only got two laps in before we had to stop. It’s nothing major and will be fixed before the next round.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

With the Colonel classified as third in the last race, it meant overall victory went to Mark Percherzewski and Amy Preston in their Cootacraft monohull Special Edition.

Percherzewski said

The weather here this weekend didn’t suit any monohull, so the American Skater gave us a bit of a challenging time. Hopefully at the next round in Hervey Bay there will be some chop for us.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

Mechanical issues once again deprived another team from taking a clean sweep of race victories and that was Team Saracen. Coming into the final race they were holding off Team AMT Racing when a fuel injector failed just after seven minutes into the twenty-minute race. It wasn’t long before AMT had past them and began to pull out a sizable lead. In the end Andy Taylor and Paul Fowlds crossed the line a minute ahead of Saracen.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

At the prize presentation, where the team collected the ‘Robert Weir Memorial Trophy’ Taylor confirmed that the water conditions were slightly different which gave them better performance on the straights.

The boat performed a little bit better on the Sunday but it’s still not as good as we want it though. Let’s hope we can find that little bit extra before we head to southern Queensland.

The teams will now have a five week break before descending upon the Urangan Boat Harbour on Queensland’s Fraser Coast with several of them hoping to have seen the last of smooth water for the foreseeable future.

Offshore superboats.

offshore powerboat racing geelong

If you are in need of some speed and high octane adrenaline action, well the Offshore Superboats on Corio bay is the just what you need. Usually tranquil Corio Bay turns into a high speed course for high powered jet boats reaching incredible speeds of up to 200kph.

jet-boat

The noise and the spectacle are amazing with water spraying some 100 meters behind the mighty high octane vessels. With sounds like the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, the roaring thunder from the engine can be heard well into Geelong’s suburbs, so their is no mistake the powerboats have once again come to Geelong.

Spectators line the shores of Corio Bay to witness the thundering and lightning fast spectacle; Steampacket Place is one of the best places as the boats are winched in and out of the water there. The boats strangely are not able to stay afloat very well when not moving at incredible speeds. The more popular places for onlookers are Cunningham Pier, Steampacket Gardens and Western Beach with the whole area around Eastern Gardens very popular locations for this free event. Steampacket Place is also the place to get up close to this huge and magnificent watercraft. Many of the boats require full size semi trailers to ship them between competition locations. The total setup of many of the larger boats runs into several millions of dollars. Some of the stats on the boats are impressive with one boat alone running twin Lamborghini V12 engines that both pump out nearly 1000 horse power.

The competition usually runs two days with speed trials and tryouts happening on the Saturday before the main competition on the Sunday afternoon.

The action is filmed for national TV and part of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships, Even filming from the helicopters look like they struggle keeping up with these monstrous powerful racers.

The beautiful waters of Corio Bay are becoming one of our most popular places for Major Events with various Swim Events the huge Australia Day weekend of Sailing with the RGYC and now the Offshore Superboats making the bay a regular on its calendar of events.

The Offshore Superboats last came to Geelong on the 26 and 27th of November in 2011. There is currently no scheduled upcoming event.

SPORT — High-speed spill in Offshore Superboat Championship Final

SPORT - High-Speed Spill in Offshore Superboat Championship Final

In near perfect conditions on Port Phillip Bay, the Mustang Class 1 entry of Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen has powered home to win yesterday’s Round Six of the Sandringham Offshore Superboat Race and claim the 2010 Championship title.

Queensland-based Mustang and stablemate Maritimo , owned by builder Bill Barry-Cotter, were the only two craft from the Class 1 field to complete the race. ACME and Trojan Steel were forced to retire with mechanical dramas and the international entry of Qatar 96 flipped in spectacular fashion in the early stages of the race.

Eight-time world champion throttleman Steve Curtis MBE and pilot Ali Al-Neama were both ejected from the Qatar 96 cockpit into the water, without injury, as the 2000hp boat flipped, landing upside down and halting the race.

Officials restarted the final race of the 2010 season adopting a shortened 30-minute format.

ACME teammates Christopher and Andrew Searle, went into the final race just 125 points ahead of Mustang but lost all claim to the title on the fourth lap retiring due to mechanical reasons.

Mustang went on to hold off a challenge from Maritimo finishing just four seconds ahead and completing 10 laps of the 5.13nm circuit.

It was the fourth consecutive race win for Mustang , the points firming a 275-point lead over ACME in the overall Class 1 Championship.

Seven other boats across three classes also contested yesterday’s race.

In the Supercat Lite 1050hp class, The Good Guys entry of brothers Brendan and Christopher Frier took a round win to close the gap on overall Class winners Global Racing to 900 points.

The competition between Saracen and SUV Dodge Ram continued today in the Supercat Outboard 600hp Class, despite the SUV Dodge Ram team going into the round with the Class win already secured.

Saracen’ s home ground advantage proved too strong, taking the round win after a disappointing result in Geelong last week.

Mick Walker and Gary Smith in F.G.I. will take home The Shark Cat Trophy for the Supercat Outboard Lite 400hp Class, winning the round ahead of the Berwicks entry of Ian Harris and Graham Fraser.

Often referred to as “Formula One on Water”, these high-tech boats are capable of speeds ranging between 84kts and 135kts, with the Class 1 boats sporting a price tag of $1million each.

“It was a dramatic end to what has been an equally dramatic season and it is disappointing that things ended as they did for our overseas visitors,” said race director Russell Embleton.

“Healthy competition is a must in any sport and it was great to see the Class 1 Championship go down to the wire.

“It was also pleasing that despite the overall results in the other classes determined prior to round six, spirited competition was still alive and well on the Bay,” he said.

GRAND HAVEN, MI -- A group of powerboaters is taking the waterways from Muskegon to Saugatuck this weekend to raise awareness and give cancer patients a day of fun on Lake Michigan.

The West Michigan Offshore powerboating club, based in Grand Haven, is hosting their annual Rock the Coast event − equal parts boat show, race and charity event.

For the third year, the club is supporting Shields of Hope , a Zeeland-based nonprofit made up of public safety officers who visit with cancer patients.

Charitable causes were part of the original mission when the club started in 2015, club president Scott Otterbein said.

“[We want] to show that the powerboat community, they’re fast, loud boats, but they’re also willing to give back and donate to local causes,” Otterbein said.

The first event of the Rock the Coast lineup starts at noon Friday, July 19.

About 25 powerboaters have volunteered to take children who have been diagnosed with cancer out for an exclusive ride on the big lake.

The Shields of Hope Kids Warrior Rides will leave from the Grand Haven Municipal Marina. Otterbein invites the public to come out on Grand Haven’s pier to wave and cheer as they go by.

“This gives them an hour of freedom to get an experience they could never get anywhere else,” he said. “Come down and watch these kids go for rides and look their faces and see the excitement in their eyes.”

On Friday evening, boaters will head to Adelaide Pointe in Muskegon for a memorial run celebrating powerboater Keith Holmes, who died while racing in 2019.

Friday’s schedule ends back in Grand Haven at the Municipal Marina for a dock party and light show from 7-9 p.m.

Events on Saturday, July 20 kick off with a poker run, with 55 powerboats racing from Muskegon to Saugatuck.

Drivers will gather at 11 a.m. at Grand Haven Municipal Marina and receive their first poker card. They’ll jet out around 12:30 p.m., so it’s encouraged spectators get to the marina around noon to get a spot.

The next stop is Mona Lake in Muskegon County, then down to Saugatuck, before turning back north to Holland’s Lake Macatawa then to Port Sheldon on Pigeon Lake.

Boats are expected to return to the Grand Haven marina to turn in their poker hand by 5 p.m.

The winner will be revealed at 7 p.m. after a buffet meal from Porter’s Smokehouse Catering as well as 50/50 raffle prizes and a bike auction.
