Undeniably, with her gentle sheer, clipper bow and 'moustache' nameplate, the Mariner 40 ketch is a very attractive cruising yacht. Her long keel and very heavy displacement suggest she'll be a steady, comfortable performer in a seaway but passage times will suffer as a result.

Many thanks to David Humphreys for submitting this great pic of  'Gabriel', his ketch-rigged Allied Princess 36 Mk2. The Mk2 version was introduced in 1980, unlike its predecessor, sporting a bowsprit. Both versions were available as either ketch or cutter rigs.

David tells us that 'Gabriel'  (hull #130) has been well maintained and up-graded since her commissioning in 1980. She's based in Annapolis MD and spends her days sailing to local destinations with a few over-nighters.

Shoot Out: 35′ Express Cruisers

Midsize express cruisers around 35′ are hot sellers. They’re not too big for handling solo, are roomy, and won’t break the bank. We picked four models with prices ranging from $220,000 to $279,000 and gave them our usual fine-toothed inspection. Not all are available with the same power, so to keep it close, we tested each with twin stern drives totaling between 600 hp and 640 hp. Inboards and diesels are available, but gas stern drives are still the most popular.

HOT STANDARDS: Hardtop; windlass; vacuum-flush commode; 7.3kW genset; 16,000-Btu a/c; galvanic isolator; MerCruiser DTS controls; camper canvas; 48-quart carry-on cooler.

PERFORMANCE: Even though it has the least power and is the heaviest of the group, it hit a top speed of 43.3 mph. That’s within 1 mph of the others, denoting an efficient hull. At 30 mph, it burned 28 gph, a shade over 1 mpg, for a range of 186 miles. Excessive bowrise while getting on plane required the use of tabs to maintain forward visibility. It docked like a champ with the drives alone. The optional Axius joystick control made it even easier.

CRUISEABILITY: After a day on deck, the standard mahogany cabin sole makes this cabin cozy-and easy to clean. It has the largest genset, ensuring plenty of power at anchor, and its galvanic isolator protects against corrosion while plugged into its dual 30-amp shorepower. Hardtop means less canvas to deal with.

HIGHS & LOWS:

HIGHS: High cabin trunk, no side-decks, and a slab master bunk (instead of an island berth) make this cabin biggest in class. Excellent mechanical rigging and installation.

LOWS: No sidedecks makes deploying fenders and spring lines tricky. Hardtop requires you to duck when going forward to the bow. High cabin trunk makes you reach way down to tie off to a cleat.

HOT STANDARDS : Hinged radar arch; 5.0kW genset; 12,000-Btu a/c; windlass; vacuum-flush commode; cockpit icemaker; cockpit refrigerator; port and starboard windshield wipers.

PERFORMANCE : This boat lifted onto plane more smoothly than the rest, with little noticeable hump and no loss of forward visibility. Credit the after-pods incorporated into its Stable-Vee hull. It topped out at 44.8 mph-and that’s with the full camper canvas up. At 30 mph, it burned 26 gph, or 1.1 mpg for a range of 204 miles. I had no trouble laying it side-to a dock while pointing into the wind-without turning on the thruster. It’s the loudest boat, posting higher decibels at all rpm.

CRUISEABILITY : Standard cockpit icemaker and refrigerator help you be a great host and provide extra cold stowage for cruising. Its 10.5-gallon water heater keeps the shower going. Folding arch gets you in where others can’t go. Companionway screen lets in air and repels bugs, so you can enjoy sleeping without the AC on.

HIGHS & LOWS

HIGHS: Swanky decor includes glass-fronted cabinets and grainy leather upholstery. The bowrail features a mid-height safety rail per ABYC. Handles well at all speeds.

LOWS: The head seacock is hard to reach. Bow thruster should have easier service access from within the boat.

HOT STANDARDS: Bow sunpad; 40a battery charger; dual 30a shorepower; galvanic isolator; vacuum-flush commode.

PERFORMANCE : The 45-mph top speed this boat posted makes it the fastest of the group. It planed smoothly, without loss of visibility over the bow. Cruising at 30 mph, it burned 26.2 gph for a range of 216 miles. Boasting a fiberglass stringer grid, it has a firmer feel coursing through waves. At the dock, it was more responsive than the rest, possibly due to its 38″ engine spacing, which is 4″ wider than typical.

CRUISEABILITY : Standard aft convertible U-lounge/sunpad, bow sunpad, and cockpit chaise make this boat a hit for those who want to tan at the cove. The 40-amp battery charger is the biggest in this group and it has dual 30-amp shorepower protected by a galvanic isolator.

HIGHS & LOWS ****

HIGHS: Wonderful helm, featuring a sporty “muscle car” gauge array and dual flip-up bolster seats. Excellent engine compartment rigging. Loved the cabin interior as much as the cockpit sun island.

LOWS: Access to the bow thruster and the starboard side fuel tank’s supply line should be improved. Wires running into the arch not chafe-protected.

RINKER EC 330 , www.rinkerboats.com 574-457-5731

HOT STANDARDS: Camper canvas; windlass; cockpit blender; cockpit icemaker; cockpit refrigerator; 12,000-Btu a/c; 5kW genset; dual-sided shorepower inlets; auto. fire extinguisher system; 30a battery charger; Lowrance GPS; spotlight.

PERFORMANCE : This boat’s 43.8-mph top speed was preceded by a smooth transition onto plane and no loss of visibility over the bow. Powering along at 30 mph, it burned 23.8 gph, with a 1.3 mpg that gave a range of 190.5 miles. This was the lowest fuel burn at cruise, along with the smallest fuel tank. It delivered excellent docking control-without relying on the thruster-despite gusty winds.

CRUISEABILITY : Cockpit blender, cockpit icemaker, and cockpit refrigerator keep the party going and provide enough cold stowage for extended weekends. Rumble seat is the perfect place for a “sun-downer.” Fiddled counters keep goods in place. Standard GPS-hey, you need it. Port and starboard shorepower inlets are convenient.

HIGHS: Attention to serviceability: There’s a support pole to keep that engine hatch up if the lift fails. Fiddled countertops and a wastebasket in the head prove Rinker’s designers are boaters themselves. ****

LOWS: The other boats feature split flip-up bolster helm seats. Here only the skipper can stand and lean. Single 30-amp shorepower may not be enough for a boat with standard air conditioning.

The Bottom Line

Not one of these boats is a tub. The Rinker offers the most standard equipment and is rich with practicality, but its decor isn’t as plush and its styling isn’t as exciting as the others. The Crownline wowed us with style and substance, but we didn’t like that it needed trim tabs to see ahead while getting on plane. The Monterey is great looking and fast-always good things. But it’s short on standard equipment, despite its amped-up electrical system. We think an express cruiser should possess style, luxury, performance, a long standards list, and dollops of practicality. Which model does all that? The Four Winns 338 Vista. Put it at the top of your list.

We asked our existing and future customers what they wanted in a 35 ft deck saloon yacht, we listened and 10 years ago we developed a yacht like no other, the Sirius 35 DS

The 35 DS was the first design in our modern deck saloon range. After her launch in 2010, the yachting press were quick to praise our achievement in creating the space of a 40ft yacht in a 35ft hull thanks to our innovative split-level living arrangement. Her internal space allows us to offer her in a two-, four- or six-berth versions all of which can be customised to your specific needs to make her the perfect yacht for you.

Like on board all of our yachts the saloon gives an unparalleled 360-degree view out whether at sea or in harbour so you can take in your surroundings whatever the weather. She’s available with two fin keels (one deep fin or one shallow fin), twin keels or a lifting keel.

After 10 years, we have personalised the 35 DS in countless ways for our owners and she continues to be as popular now as when she was first launched.

Layout options

As well as possibilities to brace and support yourself on board in a proper way, the quality of life is also defined by well-lit and airy rooms with 1.95 m headroom or more, a bright, fresh but also balanced design and a smart mixture of usable storage space and practical details.

By omitting an aft cabin (in our 4-berth and for2 versions), which is sometimes narrow and affected by waves which hit below the stern, by incorporating a companion way which is located sideways and taking advantage of the U-formed seating area, the whole low-level area provides space which is even more spacious than on our Sirius 38 DS. For more guests on board the saloon table quickly converts into a double berth (1.40 m in width and 2.20 m long, optional).

By moving the saloon seat forward you access the engine and walkway to the workshop, where most of the technical equipment is located as well as plenty of storage for tools and spares.

In the 4-berth version the owner’s cabin is situated half under the seating area in the centre of the boat, ensuring the least amount of noise and movement. It boasts a luxury double berth of 2.04 m in length and 1.60 m width running the full length. You will experience light and air in a completely new dimension!

In our for 2 version the forecabin occupies all the space forwards of the main bulkhead in front of the mast. Next to a bed, which is truly big for this size of a boat, there remains enough room for a cosy double sofa with extendable pull out and a television and a book shelf is located opposite, all with 1.90 m head room. Because of this an airy and well lit “second saloon” is created, which is without equal as it is provided with three large hatches, two windows in the deck and two optional hull windows.

Standard equipment

CE-registration: Category A, Ocean for world-wide travelling. Hull and deck: Made in hand-layed GRP. The hull is built exceptionally strong, above the waterline with vacuum-adhered sandwich, in a one-piece mould with vinylester-gelcoat and resin, fiberglass mats and rovings, which are especially developed for the boat building. Parts of the deck are also built in sandwich-construction. Hull-deck connection and bulkheads are laminated from all sides. Underwater finish: 1 layer epoxy primer and anti fouling, 2 waterline stripes in the colour of your choice. Keel: approx. 2.60t casted iron (optional: hardened lead bulb), glued and screwed to the hull with up to ten 20 mm stainless steel bolts through flatrolled steel. The forces are redistributed by massively laminated bottom floor sections. Rudder: pre-balanced rudder blade with half-skeg; tiller (wheel option). Deck coating: PVC-Flexiteek decking for side decks , upper deck and in the cockpit , on the coamings and bathing platform , (GRP-deck with antiskid and real teakdeck possible). Deck fittings: Bow pulpit, stern pushpit, guard rail with 8 stanchions in stainless steel and 4 life lines, strong solid wooden rubbing streaks, bow fitting with anchor roller and anchor windlass in the anchor locker, 20kg galvanized anchor with 8mm chain forerunner and 25m rope; self-tacking-jib system; halyards and trim lines are led back to the cockpit through halyard stoppers into a halyard box, 1 self-tailing 28 winch; closeable permanent ventilator in the anchor locker, telescopic bathing ladder, 6 kleets, 5 skylights which are recessed-mounted into the deck (3x 50×50 and 1 each 33×33 and 60x60cm); plexiglas sliding-hatch in the saloon; all deck saloon windows are made of safety-glass (option: double glazing) recessed glued in and are screwed through a solid aluminum frames fracture. Optional windows in the hull are made from bullet-proof Polycarbonate, frameless glued. There is an opening window above the galley and optional also for the seating area. Cockpit: 4 cockpit drains, Flexiteek on benches, coaming and cockpit floor, 3 cubby holes in the cockpit, gas box, 3 big locker seats with approximately 3000l of storage volume.

Cushions: 10cm foam material with high-quality fabric covers, ergonomically shaped. Rig: 2-spreader rig with forestay, shared backstay with cascade system, 2 upper shrouds, 2 middle shrouds, 2 lower shrouds, 1 main halyard, 1 jib halyard, 1 reserve halyard on the mast; main boom with 2 in boom single line reefing-systems, kicking strap; all active halyards and trim lines are led back to the cockpit. Stock #352991 Excellent 295SY! Nicely maintained! Loaded with amenities and ready to cruise! A boat that looks like it's moving or is impatient to get going even while lashed to the dock, the Monterey 295 Sport Yacht has the features, performance and downright good looks that cause owners to become attached to the brand. While an excellent express cruiser in its own right, this is truly a daytime and weekend excursion fun machine, it doesn't just look the part, it delivers. First, you've got a large, open cockpit with a U-shaped settee to starboard, the aft arm of it being a three-way convertible bench seat that allows seating facing forward, looking aft over the extended swim platform, or swings down flat for a second sun pad to augment the one on the bow. And beneath that convertible bench is a gigantic toy box to throw in wet gear, inflatables, a beach tent, you name it, just another thoughtful addition that reduces clutter around the feet of those aboard, a place for everything and everything in its place. At the transom is a hot and cold fresh water pull-out shower for rinsing off after a swim or getting the sand off your feet before tracking into your beautiful boat, and on the port side is a vanity bar with sink and stainless drawer-door refrigerator below for convenient dispensing of refreshments. Overhead, all around and down below is an impressive array of speakers for the ridiculously powerful sound system, if you ever run out of fuel try cranking up the volume and seeing if those aft-facing bullet speakers on the overhead radar arch can propel you home. At the helm the captain has a great view, not just of whoever may be stretched out in the port side passenger chaise, but outside the boat as well, and thanks to radar even at night or in fog. All controls and instruments are easy to view and operate, among them the BOW THRUSTER and windlass for easy docking and anchoring. Propelled by a 305 horsepower fuel injected Mercruiser V8 and Bravo Three twin props, top speed is around 35 MPH, handling responsive, and cruising at 25 MPH efficient and comfortable. 1999 Donzi Z 275 LXC The boat is a 29 foot Donzi inboard/outboard with a 7.4l 454 MerCruiser V8, counter-rotating propeller. The boat is in overall excellent condition. It was a one owner boat since 1999 in the Chicago Harbor (prior registration paperwork indicated it was owned by an older gentleman who lived next to Oprah in WaterTower place in Chicago). We purchased the boat in July, 2015 and recently found out that we are moving out west, to the desert, which is the reason for us selling. We've very much enjoyed the boat and it has been an excellent runner. Before we purchased the boat, an engine tune up was done, with a new distributor cap, wires, water pump and pulley. The boat starts on the first crank and has never let us down. 2 weeks ago we cruised from Racine, WI throughout Door County for a week without incident. In addition to the all the factory equipment working perfectly, the boat also has a Kicker Comp 10" subwoofer with a 680 watt amp for listening pleasure. The boat cruises between 25 - 35 mph between 3000 - 3500 rpm. Overall, the boat burns between 12.5 - 22 gallons per hour, depending on speed/rpm. Details about the boat: The boat has a full cockpit enclosure 103 gallon fuel tank 30 gallon fresh water tank 7 gallon hot water tank (works well) All plumbing works well Automatic marine toilet and 30 gallon holding tank All carpet and upholstery in good condition, except for the rear seat, which has a minor hole/tear in a corner. Boat was buffed/detailed in July, 2015 Trim tabs work well Trim on outboard motor works well 454 V8 drives like a champ and will drive the boat in the mid 40's at wide open throttle The GPS / Fish finder is dated, but works fine Boat had new bottom paint in July, 2015 The boat does not have an hour meter (which was strangely an option...) When I inquired with the original owner, apparently he plugged the motor into a machine which can read hours (?) and he recalled the hour meter reading between 300-400 hours. It appears the boat has had minimal use and is in overall excellent condition. We are continually using the boat since the weather is still cooperating! Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours.

It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision.

But the incident indicates that such run-ins may be all too normal for ocean-dwelling species, according to researchers.

The video — which could be among the first of its kind ever recorded — highlights a need to better protect these sharks as well as better understand them, according to Dr. Alexandra McInturf, a research associate at Oregon State University who coauthored a study about the incident. The findings appear in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.

“We’re calling for a legally enforceable code of conduct in this area, with speed regulations in particular,” McInturf said, referring to the waters around the Blasket Islands, off the coast of Ireland, where the basking shark incident occurred and one of the few places in the world the animals are known to congregate. “What I most hope would come out of this is just more research on this species.”

Large and elusive

The basking shark is a relatively gentle species, known for skimming the ocean’s surface for tiny planktonic crustaceans with their gaping jaws — and filter feeding in a way that’s similar to the behaviors of its relatives the whale shark and megamouth shark .

The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark .

Basking sharks are also endangered. The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that around 20,000 remain in the world.

In an effort to collect more data on the creatures’ foraging and eating habits, McInturf and her research partners have tagged and strapped cameras to roughly 20 basking sharks.

Then, on April 24, one of the cameras caught the unexpected: images of a basking shark feeding near the surface before it experiences a sharp, sudden strike against the hull of a boat.

The footage also shows the aftermath of the encounter, including a large scratch drawn across the shark’s back near its dorsal fin, and some of the blue anti-fouling paint — a type of coating used on the bottom of boats to prevent barnacle buildup — that marred the animal’s speckled skin.

Marine traffic and endangered species

Researchers have long known that boats and other marine traffic can pose a threat to sea creatures.

While the problem is fairly well documented for whales, however, there is less data indicating how severe the issue is for sharks.

But the video and study findings that came out of the incident are timely for the shark research community, noted Dr. Christopher Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. In his work studying sharks of all types near Southern California, he said roughly 1 in 10 that he encounters show signs of a dangerous encounter with a vessel.

Basking sharks, which are more susceptible to boat strikes due to their habit of feeding at the surface, have often been spotted with paint or scars on their fins or backs — likely the marks of run-ins with boat propellers and ship hulls, McInturf said.

Though it can sometimes be difficult to tell whether the markings are the result of accidents or if the sharks are merely rubbing up against parked vehicles, the researchers’ video provides clear evidence: This basking shark had a sudden and unexpected collision with a moving boat.

The footage also goes on to show the shark quickly escaping to the depths of the ocean. The animal stayed there, barely moving, until the camera stopped recording some 7 ½ hours later. The device, McInturf noted, which includes the camera and an instrument similar to a fitness tracker that logs the shark’s movement, was designed to stop collecting data and pop off the shark so the researchers could retrieve the data.

It’s all but impossible to tell whether the shark survived  after the tracking device stopped collecting data, McInturf added, though she points out that — even if the shark is alive — the injuries could leave lasting detrimental effects.

Protecting basking sharks

McInturf emphasized that Ireland — and the United Kingdom — have already taken significant steps to help protect endangered basking sharks.

Incidentally, the shark was also hit by a boat that happened to be in waters that Ireland had recently designated as a national marine park .

There are not, however, enforceable rules associated with the park just yet. And that’s one thing McInturf hopes will change as more policymakers and boaters recognize the importance of establishing a sustainable harmony between marine traffic and embattled wildlife.

But McInturf said she does not intend to place blame.

“Something I think a lot about is the fact that these basking sharks are really hard to see when they’re not at the surface,” McInturf said, emphasizing that these incidents likely occur by accident. “I’m not trying to villainize the vessel.”

Lowe added that even where regulations do exist, they can be difficult to enforce. But he sees value in getting the word out to boaters, hoping they will slow down and watch out for sea creatures of their own volition.

Boats, after all, can also be severely damaged by a run-in with a shark.

“The first step, I think, is education — just educating boaters,” Lowe said.

He added that while it’s heartening to see some shark species begin to stabilize or recover from steep population losses, he can’t help but wonder how much faster they’d recover if boat collisions weren’t a threat.
