In this age of technology and ever-present cameras, it seems impossible to fly under the radar – even more so when you’re one half of one of the industry’s most powerful couples. But money can buy anything, including privacy, in a world that has long forgotten the meaning of the word.

barry diller yacht

Eos is one of the world’s largest and most famous sailing yachts and a record-breaker until the 2017 arrival of Oceanco’s Black Pearl, a stunning sailing masterpiece that is believed to have inspired the construction of the future record-breaker, Jeff Bezos’ Y721. Whenever Eos makes an appearance in public, much like a superstar, it draws attention and makes headlines, yet, for all this, it remains an enigma.

Here is an attempt to lift the veil as much as possible on this enigma, a $200 million vessel that is said to be the epitome of luxury, elegance and, not in the least important, outstanding design. After all, you don’t become an icon (enigma or not) by conforming to standards.

barry diller yacht

Eos is named after the Greek goddess of dawn, the daughter of titans Hyperion and Theia, and sister of the sun god and the moon goddess. Eos is a sailing yacht, a three-mast Bermuda-rigged schooner that relies on a couple of MTU 4000-series engines for outstanding performance, regardless of the wind conditions. At full throttle, Eos can hit top speeds of 16 knots (18 mph / 29.5 kph).

barry diller yacht

Built by luxury shipyard  Lurssen  on a Lurssen naval architecture, an exterior design by Bill Langan, and interiors by Francois Catroux, Eos was delivered in 2006, after a three-year construction phase. Since delivery, it has had one single owner and he’s been keeping it a secret on purpose, as it serves as the family yacht.

That owner is billionaire media mogul Barry Diller, known as  “Diller killer”  in the industry because of his exceptional negotiation skills. He is married to fashion designer (and icon in her own right) Diane von Furstenberg, who is often erroneously referred to as the owner. Together, the two have an estimated net worth of $5.2 billion as of 2022, which means that, yes, they can definitely afford a $200 million vessel, as well as keep it a secret from the public by not chartering it.

barry diller yacht

At 93 meters (305 feet) in total length, Eos is among the top 5% yachts in the world by LOA. The fact that it’s a sailing vessel would have been enough to draw all eyes to it at port, but the three 61-meter (200-foot) masts make it an unforgettable sight, as does the deep dark blue hull. Eos has a teak deck, an aluminum hull, and aluminum superstructure. Much of the superstructure was repaired after an extensive fire in 2012, when the ship was at harbor while Diller and von Furstenberg were visiting ashore.

barry diller yacht

A later refit program, throughout 2018 and 2019, was even more extensive: the Rodal rigs were removed, repaired and repainted, the hull and superstructure were repainted, the tank arrangement was reorganized and the engines were overhauled. Onboard systems like the treatment unit and the watermaker were also serviced then, and navigation systems were brought up to speed with state-of-the-art equipment.

barry diller yacht

With an interior volume of 1,500 GT, Eos offers accommodation for 14 guests across seven suites and a crew of 21 – a necessarily high number because sailing it is no single-man job. Eos was never offered for charter, though legend has it that it has hosted some of the biggest stars in the world, including Jeff Bezos on his final week as Amazon CEO in 2021, singer and actor Harry Styles, and television host and reality star producer Andy Cohen.

barry diller yacht

Because it’s always been used privately, details on the interior are as scarce as photos of the same, but again, legend has it that features a viewing lounge with panoramic views, a jacuzzi, a 4.2-meter (14-foot) mural of the world map, and a most glamorous staircase made of glass. A 2.7-meter (9-foot) tall sculpture by Anh Duong, showing Diane von Furstenberg, graces Eos as figurehead. von Furstenberg usually posts to social while onboard Eos during summer-long journeys, but she always makes sure her photos don’t show much of the interior.

In 2009, when Eos pulled into an Australian port for some maintenance work, captain Lucas Alexander told the local  media  that sailing Eos felt like living in a high-end villa at sea. He also said that the vessel never traveled by a preset itinerary, which, if true, probably helps with keeping it a mystery.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Jeff Bezos wound down his time as Amazon CEO aboard Barry Diller's yacht.

He’s sailing into the sunset.

Jeff Bezos wrapped up his final weekend as Amazon CEO on fellow mogul Barry Diller’s yacht in Greece, sources told Page Six.

Spies in Greece told us that Bezos, 57, was staying aboard Diller’s $200 million sailing yacht, Eos, along with Diller’s wife, designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Another source told us that Bezos’ girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, was also traveling with him, as were his brother and sister, Mark and Christina. (Mark is also scheduled to travel this month with Jeff into space on the billionaire’s Blue Origin New Shepard spacecraft.)

Greek reports said Diller and his guests, including Bezos, stopped on Sunday on the island of Antiparos to dine with Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, as well as CNN’s Anderson Cooper and the prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and his wife.

The group from Diller’s yacht was also seen on Saturday dining in Sifnos, local reports said. Diller’s boat is known as the world’s largest private sailing vessel at 305 feet.

On Monday, Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO. On Wednesday, his net worth reportedly surged to $211 billion , making him the richest person ever.

Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller at the 2019 Sun Valley Conference.

A source in Greece told Page Six that Diller and Bezos were leaving the country on Monday to head to the Sun Valley conference. Allen & Co.’s annual “summer camp for billionaires” is returning this week after a COVID-induced hiatus in 2020.

The Post reported that Diller is expected at the conference and that Bezos has also RSVP’d “yes” and is expected to bring  new Amazon CEO Andy Jassy , who officially took the helm of the company this week.

Amazon announced earlier this year that Bezos would step down as CEO to assume the role of executive chairman of the e-commerce giant’s board. Reports have said that he’ll dedicate more time toward initiatives such as the Bezos Earth Fund, his Blue Origin spaceship company, The Washington Post, and the Amazon Day 1 Fund.

Which Media Mogul’s Yacht Has Had More Famous People On It?

Every summer for the A-list is yacht season. Naomi Campbell recently shut down pregnancy rumors by posing strategically on a yacht, and even the Real Housewives can’t resist a nautical moment. But this summer, it looks like we’ve officially got a case of dueling yachts to unpack, and it’s all thanks to the 70 million dollar vessel owned by media mogul Barry Diller and the 590 million dollar boat owned by studio executive David Geffen . If you look closely, each yacht has been the site of some of the most A-list celebrity meet-ups you could imagine. It would be so difficult to decide on which yacht one might prefer to spend a lazy summer day— Karlie Kloss is a frequent guest of David Geffen’s, but she most recently took a photo on Barry Diller’s yacht with Harry Styles and Diane von Furstenberg. Diane Sawyer, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen are just a few of the talent to grace the 454-foot deck of Geffen’s “Rising Sun” (which also reportedly has a basketball court, by the way), while von Furstenberg and Diller’s “Eos” has played host to Bradley Cooper , Gayle King, and Oprah Winfrey. With rosters as dazzling as those, whose yacht would you rather party on?

The superyachts owned by tech moguls

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to join the exclusive club of yacht-owning tech tycoons as the rumoured owner of Oceanco's mighty 127m sailing yacht . Though it should come as no surprise - other big names in tech such as the late Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen have been responsible for some of the biggest and most ground-breaking superyachts in the world...

The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines. However, the intricate gold paintwork, scarlet bootstrap and elaborate figurehead on the bow particularly set her apart.

Larry Ellison

American business magnate Larry Ellison is the co-founder of the billion-dollar computer tech corporation Oracle. In 2004, he commissioned the 138-metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun (pictured), which stands today as the 15th largest yacht in the world. It was also the last yacht that ever came from the drawing boards of legendary designed Jon Bannenberg, sporting a military-esque profile with a lean destroyer-type hull and extensive use of structural glass . Rising Sun boasts 8,000m² of living space including a wine cellar and basketball court, with a crew of 45. One of her tenders, a catamaran, even carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore.

Ellison later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen and has since hosted a parade of Hollywood's glitterati on board including Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey – to name a few.

In 2011, Ellison appeared to downsize and took delivery of the 88-metre Feadship Musashi . Not unlike Rising Sun in its appearance, structural glass features heavily throughout with a central glass lift, surrounded by a stainless steel and glass staircase that passes through every deck.

More about this yacht

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is responsible for two of the most iconic superyachts in the world. At 126-metres in length, Octopus is perhaps his most famous. Built by Lürssen in 2003, this ice-classed superyacht was designed for extended cruising to the most remote locations on earth with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. Home to a helicopter garage, drive-in tender garage, six tenders, and a submarine, she packs a serious punch within her 9,932GT – not to mention the cinema, swimming pool, recording studio, basketball court and spa. At the end of 2019, she joined the market for the very first time , having completed an eight-month refit at Blohm+Voss, and remains the benchmark for exploration yachting.

Tatoosh is another honourable mention and was built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000, three years prior to the delivery of Octopus . At 92-metres, she's smaller than her successor, but to describe Tatoosh as "small" would be a severe understatement. Highlights include a six-foot-deep swimming pool, a pair of helipads, a crew of 30, and a custom 12-metre Hinckley powerboat that she carries on her top deck. Tatoosh is also listed for sale following a refit earlier this year.

Yachts for charter

The 78-metre Feadship Venus was built for the late Apple boss and founder Steve Jobs. Built under the codename Project Aqua, Venus was launched to international fanfare in 2012, heralded for its extensive use of glass and pared-back design courtesy of Philippe Starck . Innovative features include a false top deck that conceals the communication and television receivers from view and a passarelle that, when opened, looks like the charging port of an iPhone. Venus ’s interior details have been closely guarded since its launch. Sadly, Jobs died a year before the yacht was delivered.

Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi led the team that built the first edition of the Microsoft Office software suite and was rumoured to have previously owned Lürssen’s iconic 71-metre SKAT .  Nearly two decades after her launch in 2002, she joined the market for the first time and now Simonyi is thought to have upgraded to the 89-metre Lürssen Norn . Both yachts, penned by Espen Onion, share similar design features. Standout features include an alfresco cinema and adapted depth pool floor with dance floor. Norn was delivered in May 2023.

Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly owns the high-speed SilverYachts superyacht named Dragonfly , after Google’s once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Delivered in 2009, the 73.3-metre Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water with a transatlantic range at 22 knots and a fuel consumption of only 360 litres per hour at 18 knots, extending her range to 4,500 nautical miles. Dragonfly is said to have a dance floor and open-air movie theatre on board. The vessel was applauded for its contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. The crew reportedly moved 62 metric tons of freshwater ashore, treated over 250 patients, facilitated three medical evacuations, and built shelters in multiple villages and cleared numerous helicopter landing zones for ongoing support.

Google’s billionaire co-founder Larry Page purchased the 60-metre explorer yacht conversion Senses from a New Zealand businessman Sir Douglas Myers back in 2011. The globe-trotting superyacht features interiors by Philippe Starck and can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board, with primary guests reaping the benefits of the master suite's gyro-stabilised bed. Senses also houses an exceptional toy box with three high-speed tenders, six wave runners, a jet board and a JetLev. According to the New Zealand Herald, Senses is currently undergoing a refit in Whangārei, New Zealand, after being sold to an unknown buyer in 2020.

Barry Diller

The world’s largest three-masted schooner – also the third largest sailing yacht in the world – is owned by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia Group. The 92.92-metre sailing yacht, named Eos , was built in Germany by Lürssen and delivered in 2006 with a trio of masts that stand 61-metres tall. The sailing yacht has hosted the couple's star-studded group of friends including Andy Cohen, Gayle King, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles and Karlie Kloss. The interiors were designed by Francois Catroux, who Vanity Fair named as “the super-rich's favourite interior designer" in 2016.

Mark Zuckerburg

The 107-metre Kleven superyacht Andromeda was built for serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart and delivered under the name Ulysses . In 2017, a year after its launch, rumours began circulating that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg had purchased the rugged, six-deck explorer (although a Facebook spokesperson was quick to stamp out the rumours and released a statement denying the claims). Andromeda can carry 36 guests and is equipped with an impressive inventory of toys and tenders, including six motorbikes, two ATVs, a helicopter and an amphibious rib. Five years after her launch, Andromeda still ranks among the largest explorer yachts in the world .

Eric Schmidt

The former Google ceo Eric Schmidt backed out of the purchase of the abandoned 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero but has been said to have moved onto become the new owner of a 95-metre Lürssen. Kismet was sold in September 2023 to the billionaire as part of one of the biggest brokerage deal of the year. With the details shrouded in secrecy the yacht is now aptly known as Whisper . Espen Onio was responsible for her iconic exterior while inside was thanks to  Reymond Langton , achieving the original brief from the previous commissioning owner Shahid Khan of “caviar and champagne.” Standout details include the hi-tech, art deco saloon, a private observation platform and the Persian-inspired spa area.

The co-founder and former ceo of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has been rumoured to own the 99.9-metre Feadship , Moonrise. The yacht’s clean and strong lines, penned by Chris Bottoms from Studio de Voogt , won the highly competitive class of best displacement motor yachts above 3,000 GT in the World Superyacht Awards 2021. Features include the helicopter landing deck and modern interiors by Remi Tessier . Accommodation is for up to 16 guests, and there are 32 crew members onboard Moonrise to attend to the guests' every need. The Ukrainian-American mogul is also said to own the accompanying support vessel Nebula.

Evan Speigel

The Silicone Valley ceo, Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel has been reportedly said to own the 94.8-metre Feadship Bliss. Delivered in 2021 the motor yacht penned by Feadship's Studio De Voogt Naval Architects has most recently been spotted cruising Auckland in September 2023. Spiegel is rumoured to be Feadship's younger client. Bliss can accommodate up to 18 guests across nine staterooms; however little else is known about the 2983 GT yacht.

Barry Diller Weighs In From His Yacht On Strikes, Urging Media Companies To “Get Out Of The Room” With Netflix & Other Tech Giants And Hammer Out A Separate Deal

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Longtime media potentate Barry Diller called on media companies to “get out of the room” with tech giants and instead hammer out a separate resolution to the writers and actors strikes.

“They should certainly get out of the room with their deepest fiercest and almost conclusive enemy, Netflix, and probably with Apple and Amazon,” Diller said on the podcast On with Kara Swisher . “Because Netflix is in one business and they are the rulers of the business they’re in. The other two, Apple and Amazon Prime, are in completely different businesses that have no business model relative to production of movies and television.”

'Suits' Spinoff 'Pearson' Lands On Peacock After Meghan Markle Legal Drama Becomes Hit On Netflix

The former Fox, Paramount and Universal boss, who has been more focused on InterActive Corp. and other digital ventures over the past 20-plus years, called in from his yacht, Swisher said in an introduction to the chat. “I don’t know where he was, floating around, heading to Venice,” she added. The bulk of the interview concerned non-entertainment topics, including Diller’s support of Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie and his efforts to rein in tech companies’ use of artificial intelligence in the publishing arena.

Of tech giants Apple and Amazon, Diller said, “I just don’t think they belong in the same room as producers. I think producers ought to go and say, ‘We’re on our own. We’re going to negotiate with you directly. We are your savior. Historically, we’ve been in business together for literally a hundred years. We are your natural allies, not your enemies.'”

Diller’s comments line up with sentiment from the strike front that Deadline reported about earlier this week. Members of the AMPTP have been said to be confronting internal dissent and finding it difficult to synch up with each other in talks with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA given their varying business models and objectives. The disconnect has added another layer of complexity to finding a path to ending the work stoppage.

Diller has long suggested that Netflix long ago “won” the streaming race. On the podcast, he ties the company’s meteoric rise and disruption of Hollywood models to the strikes.

“Netflix induced — I would say to some degree seduced — all these companies to go into streaming to lose huge amounts of money to try and build a competitive streaming service,” Diller said. “They degraded their investment in cable because of the effect of Netflix on cable. They degraded their investment in their broadcasting arms.” He went on to label Netflix “the architects of a strike.” He noted that the streaming giant is “in the same room with the people they have killed who were trying to get out of this in some way. The strike does one thing and one thing only, in the end because the strike will get settled. What does it do? It strengthens Netflix and weakens the others. Now, what kind of genius do you have to be to pull that off in a fairly straight line over the last 10 years? That’s quite remarkable.”

Despite his digital orientation of late, Diller has also been an outspoken advocate for broadcast television, and he returned to the subject on the podcast. Media companies embroiled in the guild fight and trying to steer through an intensely difficult operating climate “ought to reorient themselves and say, ‘We each own a great television network, fully distributed in every household in the United States,” he said. “Let’s not treat it as some yesterday’s sliver. Let’s go compete. Let’s take some of our shows.’ Look, it is in the end a business of hits. Let’s take some of our shows and our creativity and build our networks back up. It’s there for the take. Let’s go take everything else we do and invigorate it again with capital allocation that fits the suit.”

Diane von Furstenberg Candice Bergen Emma Thompson and More Get Their Final Yachts In

Once again, it’s that time of the year. Labor Day is next week, and so summer’s unofficial close drifts ever closer, lurking beyond the summer horizon, just lying in wait to whisper in your ear that you need to go buy pants and get your life together. Things will soon have a wash of seriousness to them. In will come books, notebooks, sweaters, and a furrowed brow. Out will go skin and frivolous yachts.

But not yet. There’s still a week, and some smart people seem to be getting their last yachts of the summer in. One last vacation on the books. A final hurrah, a goodbye to all that yachting, at least until next season. Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, card-carrying yachters , invited some friends to their big ship over the weekend. The evidence came from within, a call from inside the house, if you will, as we know about this trip due to an Instagram from the cofounder of a spirits brand, Bruce Bozzi, as spotted by the Daily Mail , and not due to paparazzi. This is all to say, where the trip was is anyone’s guess. My guess? I’m going to say Mallorca. This is based on nothing, except, perhaps, that it seems like a nice place to take a 305-foot superyacht called Eos that’s reportedly worth $200 million .

The travelers were many. Emma Thompson, Diane Sawyer, and Candice Bergen. If the guest list were to stop there, then von Furstenberg could sell tickets to the cruise. That’s someone’s idea of a dream cruise. That’s maybe my idea of a dream cruise. But there were still more people on the trip. Bozzi and his husband, Creative Artists Agency cochairman Bryan Lourd , plus film producer Jason Blum and his wife, Lauren Schuker, and Ricky Van Veen, CollegeHumor cofounder and Allison Williams ’s ex.

Good for all of them. Smart people. Taking advantage of the last days of yacht season by yachting. Who knows what the fall will bring, what kind of work must get done, which big ideas will have to get thought up. For at least a little longer, one can be amongst friends, brain as smooth as the sea on a calm and breezeless day.

The 2023 superyacht summer recap: Jeff Bezos is now king of the high seas

  • For billionaires and their celebrity friends, warm weather means it's yacht season.
  • Jeff Bezos recently debuted his $500 million megayacht Koru, which criss-crossed the Mediterranean.
  • Here's a recap of some superyachts that made headlines this summer — and the famous faces spotted on them.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos made headlines in 2019 for a rare appearance partying at sea on David Geffen's yacht, the Rising Sun , with ex-Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and model Karlie Kloss.

Four years later, Bezos is no longer Amazon's CEO, and he's spent the last few months earning a new title: king of the high seas. As 2023's yacht season comes to a close, it's clear that Bezos' brand new $500 million superyacht won the summer.

Many of the world's rich and famous have shied away from being spotted vacationing on yachts . Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made that mistake early in the season, sparking backlash after hosting a lavish soiree overlooking a bevy of yachts on the French Riviera, just weeks after the Hollywood writer's strike kicked off.

But Bezos and his superyacht guests appear undaunted by coverage of their travels.

Bezos named his megaboat Koru, after a Maori symbol of growth (perhaps a reference to being the world's largest sailing yacht at 417 feet long) and new beginnings.

Koru took its maiden voyage to Gibraltar in April, and a flurry of photographed stops followed: In May, a shirtless Bezos and his now-fiancee Lauren Sanchez — who has a striking resemblance to the sculpture on Koru's bow — took the yacht for a spin off the coast of Spain, before sailing it to the Cannes Film Festival.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez)

In June, Koru made its way to the Italian Riviera , where the couple posed for photos on the ship's deck. Then it stopped by the Italian island Capri, before posting up at nearby Positano, a cliffside town that's become a favorite of celebrities and travel influencers.

Related stories

There, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, the couple was seen strolling the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Yacht season's runner-up: billionaire Barry Diller's Eos

Another highlight of this year's yacht season was the 305 foot-long Eos, owned by billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, which also had a busy summer criss-crossing the Mediterranean.

A staple of superyacht season, Eos' 2023 summer schedule included an early stop in Mallorca , where Diller and von Furstenberg hiked with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King; a trip to Greece where von Furstenberg visited with British Vogue editor Edward Enninful and Valentino cofounder Valentino Giancarlo Giammetti; and a stop on the Amalfi Coast where von Furstenberg snagged a picture with Kris Jenner.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Diane von Furstenberg (@therealdvf)

In August, the ship made its way to Croatia, where its owners dined with Hollywood A-listers Candice Bergen, Emma Thompson, and Jason Blum, as well as Diane Sawyer and Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd.

The Eos docked in Venice to end its summer season, where von Furstenberg hosted the annual DVF Awards — and began furnishing one of her dry-land residences.

Not too far away in Venice's harbor was Maìn, Giorgio Armani's yacht, on which he hosted guests like Sydney Sweeney and Kerry Washington as part of his One Night Only fashion event earlier this month.

Many of the world's other famous superyachts — and the folks who frequent them — appear to have largely avoided the public eye this summer.

"In a world of long-lens constant paparazzi, there is a place for relaxed privacy that many of us take for granted," a longtime superyacht employee, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, recently told Insider.

That's likely the privacy that Geffen is enjoying on the Rising Sun, the yacht where Bezos was photographed a few summers ago — and on which Geffen infamously self-isolated in March 2020.

While the ship has been keeping a low profile this yacht season, it's reportedly been spotted in Capri and Mallorca , though without its typical celebrity entourage on board. Most recently it made a splash in a place not typically known for attracting the world's most expensive crafts: Portland, Maine.

The world’s largest private sailing yacht, owned by American media mogul Barry Diller, was seen cruising into Cairns last week. When a $100 million sailing yacht comes into town, you certainly notice, and the Diller’s EOS has been attracting all kinds of attention.

Known as the world’s largest sailing yacht, the EOS, which is named after a Greek goddess, is owned by American media entrepreneur, Barry Diller. Diller is the chairman and CEO of leading internet media company IAC. His yacht, which is estimated to cost $100 million, has just sailed into Cairns for maintenance last week where it is anticipated to remain until January. Diller is currently in the US for work, but plans to rejoin his yacht before it sets sail for the Solomon Islands in the New Year.

EOS is a 305-foot super yacht decked to the max with features such as jet skis, powerboats, and five-star rooms. Chief officer on board, Dave Ackerley, has said that EOS is currently manned by two chefs, three engineers, nine deck crew, captains and stewardesses.

Ackerley said, “Cairns is a good place for us to pull up. No one has been here before and we are employing local help with the boat.”

The beautiful super yacht took three years to build by German builders and was launched in 2006 upon completion.

Diane von Furstenberg is enjoying some rest and relaxation on the high seas, and her husband Barry Diller couldn't resist snapping a photo of his ladylove enjoying a nap in Sweden while aboard his $70 million yacht.

The 77-year-old chairman of IAC took to Instagram on Sunday to post a snapshot of the legendary designer curled up on a cream and navy patterned couch with a blanket thrown over her legs.

'Afternoons,' he captioned the sweet image of Diane, 72, sound asleep with her head resting on a stack of throw pillows.

In the photo, the icon's dark curls are shrouding her face, and she is dressed casually in a baggy gray long-sleeve and comfortable black pants.

The only comment on the post came from their friend Andy Cohen, 51, who happily took credit for the appearance of the stylish couch.

'I’m glad you let me pick the new fabric for the cushions,' he wrote.

On the same day, the billionaire returned to Instagram to post a snapshot of Diane on a smaller boat with one of their dog's perched on the bow, writing: 'afterafternoons.'

The picture, which was taken from behind, shows only the back of Diane's head as she looks out at the water (and the dog) in front of her.

The dogs, Deena and Evita, are clones of the couple's late Jack Russell terrier Shannon.

After their beloved dog passed away, they paid a Korean cloning firm $100,000 to duplicate their pooch's DNA it was revealed in 2016.
