About Walking Zandvlei

Start: Imperial Yacht Club parking area (alongside the Sea Scout Base on Promenade Road) Finish: the yacht club, or halfway in Muizenberg Duration: 2 km one way, or 4 km return Fitness: anyone can walk this, and the route is perfect for children's prams. It is a popular dog-walking path, and you're likely to bump into locals and their dogs en route Our tip: it can get really windy on the exposed Zandvlei shore, so go prepared with an all weather jacket

Zandvlei is the only functioning estuary on the False Bay coast of Cape Town today. But when the Dutch arrived in 1652, Zandvlei was a huge marsh fed by the rivers that drained the Constantia valley and the Cape Flats . In winter the water would rise over the sand bar, whilst in summer the mouth silted up.

Only in 1882 was the inaccessible marshland made more available by an embankment across the vlei, which allowed the suburban railway to connect to Muizenberg.

Today it is an estuarine lake to the east of Lakeside and Muizenberg. The banks have been stabilised since the time of van Riebeeck, and a series of water canals join the vlei to Marina da Gama on its far eastern flank, parallel to Prince George Drive.

The water is ideal for yachting, windboard sailing, kite-boarding, canoeing, fishing (carp, tilapia and, at the southern edge, haarder and springer) and SUP (stand up paddle boarding).

Wildwood Island lies on the vlei's northern shore and is, as its name suggests, a bird sanctuary and conservation area not open to the public. Over 130 bird species have been sighted on the vlei.

People make good use of the grassed area of the park, a little further along Promenade Road where there is a braai and picnic space in which to relax and unwind, particularly over weekends.

To the south is the mouth of Zandvlei, where it connects to Muizenberg beach . The mouth is an important fish nursery, particularly during winter when the mouth is open.

The level of the vlei is controlled by bulldozing the sand to either side of the channel at the mouth of the vlei, allowing fresh water out, when the levels get too high (during winter). Just when is governed by a series of rules that include the full and new moon.

The route is really easy to follow, simply keep to the edge of the vlei, following a southerly direction. You will notice that birds are plentiful along the vlei's banks and one can easily spot ducks, coots, moorhens, sandpipers, white-headed gulls, plovers and sacred ibis.

Occasionally, especially when the water is low as it is in summer, you'll spot the odd flamingo and pelican on the northern edges of the vlei.

About 500 metres from the start you will pass a concrete launching ramp, and once you reach the braai areas, look out for the gravel path that will take you between the sports fields and the vlei.

The trees alongside the banks of the picnic and braai areas are manatoka trees, seriously good for coastal gardens as their thick, hard, glossy leaves can withstand the winds (and yes, the name does sound New Zealand-like, the trees originally came from Australia).

Look out for the old horse stables, on the other side of Main Road, that used to house the horses that drew municipal rubbish carts. Back then the refuse site was where Marina da Gama now lies. At one stage, Rotary took over the running of the stables and Scouts used to operate here.

The next landmark along the route is the old bowling green, and shortly thereafter a footbridge, which takes pedestrians across to the eastern edge of the vlei.

Most people use the Royal Road Bridge, close to Muizenberg, as a place to turn around and return.

But it is also a nice idea to keep walking on past the Supertube to the beachfront area where there are a series of coffee shops, surf shops cum coffee shops and restaurants, including a Knead, where you could pick up a loaf of bread and a good cup to go, before heading back.

Look out for Vergenoeg (42 Royal Road) a beautiful heritage building (Flemish revival style) designed by Sir Herbert Baker for Alpheus Williams, the then GM of De Beers.

If your walk ends here, head up to Main Road where you can catch a local minibus taxi back to Lakeside and the start of the walk. You can raise your hand for them to stop, and they hoot if they still have space.

Or take the train (the station is just beyond the beachfront area, on Main Road) to return to Lakeside (the station is not far from the yacht club).

Muizenberg's station building was erected in 1912 and is a beautiful example of the Edwardian era. Together with Post Huys (not far from the station), the old Carnegie Library (now the police station) and the Court House next door, they present a wonderful historical feature on Muizenberg's Main Road.

Peninsula Canoe Club

Zandvlei Sports Club

“since we have achieved our freedom, there can only be one division amongst us: between those who cherish democracy and those who do not.” – nelson mandela.

The Zandvlei Sports Club (ZSC) is made up of Members from a variety of different Sporting Codes including Canoeing, Canoe Polo, Jiu Jitsu, Pilates, Sailing and Stand-up Paddle Boarding. Within each Sporting Code, Members may choose to remain independent or to join/form a subsection club catering for their specific needs within the bounds of the ZSC Constitution e.g. within the Canoeing Sporting Code is the Peninsula Canoe Club.  ZSC is a democratically run umbrella organisation formed by its Members to determine and administer the common interest of all Members in a fair manner.

When each individual member’s Membership Fees are fully paid up for the current calendar year to ZSC, Membership is activated. Subsection clubs may add their own surcharge to the ZSC Membership Fee, which is then reimbursed to that subsection club.  As ZSC is run as a non-profit organisation, these funds are all for the maintenance, improvement and day-to-day running of our beautiful premises.

By applying for membership, all members agree to abide by the prevailing constitution, the decisions democratically voted in at AGMs and SGMs, the decisions made by the Executive, and to fully co-operate with the governance and administration of the Club in a positive and constructive manner.

The overall administration is by a Committee. Members vote to democratically elect the Executive positions of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer Committee Members to represent them in running the affairs of the club. The other positions are separately elected by the constituent clubs and approved at the ZSC AGM.

The current 2024 ZSC Committee consists of:

(Regarding Member Club Delegates from IYC and Redham House Rowing Club: Both clubs are no longer members so not applicable. See IYC account below.)

The Clubhouse and grounds and any booking/hiring of the venue are managed by the ZSC Manageress, Tracy Pomeroy-Ward, who can be contacted at [email protected] or 071 174 3099.

A Silver Lining: ‘Spinnaker Party’ survives the CYC fire

  • By Julia Michelle Dawson
  • Dec 21, 2023

First thing Tuesday morning I was awakened by the ping of a text saying the California Yacht Club had burned down.

Like many people who have been members of the more than 100-year-old club that has been in Marina del Rey since the 1960s, my mind was flooded with 30 years of memories.

Family memories, great friends’ memories, fun party memories, thrilling yacht racing memories. It wasn’t until mid-afternoon that the largest painting I have ever created popped into my mind — and I was devastated.

“Spinnaker Party” is a tryptic 12 feet wide and 5 feet tall. It depicts the downwind leg of a yacht race with many colorful spinnakers flying. Some of these spinnakers I simply made up. Others had meaning not only to me but to members of the California Yacht Club and the greater Santa Monica Bay yacht racing community.

In the center panel is the 55-foot Beneteau “Ruby d’ Eau” in the winning position. It’s no surprise that I raced on Ruby. The beautiful white boat with a red spinnaker is owned by CYC member Dr. Richard Benedon. We

love winning!

Richard liked the idea of his beautiful Ruby being immortalized as a winner so much he bought the painting and donated it to the club with the caveat that it be kept on the dining room wall which was 12 feet wide and fit as if it were commissioned exactly for that space. (It was just serendipity.)

With the change in management the painting was moved down to the Epicurean Room to make space for the 100-year anniversary decorations. This did break the agreement, but it also probably saved “Spinnaker Party’s” life.

On Facebook people started asking me about the painting and then mentions were forwarded to me. “Spinnaker Party” had miraculously survived the fire. Had it been on the wall upstairs which was next to the kitchen, it probably would have been lost.

Jeffery Matzdorff, an offshore delivery skipper who grew up with his family at CYC, took his dingy past the club to see the damage firsthand. Through a broken window, he could see “Spinnaker Party” still colorfully hanging on the wall in the Epicurean Room. He sent the pictures of the painting and the contrastingly ravaged building. It’s a miracle.

People and their spinnakers have been immortalized in the painting. Anthony Agoglia, who was on the bridge in line to be commodore but passed away has his blue spinnaker with a white stripe flying high in the painting.

Many people who have their boats depicted on the canvas have stood in front of it with their hand out as if they were holding their boat up.

David Bell, a music composer who wrote the themes for two of the “Star Trek” movies and for “Murder She Wrote,” among others, has a spinnaker on “Glory B” his Hinkley 40 foot, which is blue and has golden stripes of the music staff.

John Staff, an architect who has won many regattas, displayed his artistic abilities on this unique blue and red spinnaker, which is on the center panel.

Depicted in the center panel is Rascal, a Hunter 37.5, owned Kathy St. Amant and Monica Chaban, who are not members of CYC but attended many events there and received many awards for their sailing prowess. St. Amant was surprised to see her spinnaker in the painting and posed proudly with it. She designed the beautiful spinnaker herself. St. Amant is the vice commodore of the Southern California

Yachting Association.

Lynn McLaughlin, who crews on Ruby, Rascal and other boats said, “I burst into tears when I saw that image (of ‘Spinnaker Party’ surviving). It really drove it home for me that so many memories and precious items were lost. And yet, to see ‘Spinnaker Party’ and the silver cups down on the first floor gave me hope and a big reminder. CYC is made of members and many more ‘Spinnaker Parties’ ahead.”

California Yacht Club member Sarah Schoessler Faura wrote that [“Spinnaker Party’s”] survival was “An amazing ray of sunshine in an otherwise dreary day.”

Brenda Patten Hampton wrote that the painting was the “first thing she thought of when she heard about the fire.”

Michelle Sevilla Kringen said she “wondered about the painting all day” until I posted the pictures Jeffrey Matzdorff sent.

Whitney Green who competed on her Beneteau “Pacific” with a beautiful blue spinnaker covered with white stars is depicted in the left panel. She often won in the Cruising A Class.

In the center of the right panel is the spinnaker that took Patrice Bonnefoi and his Beneteau Oceanis 45’ “La Vigie” from Marina del Rey all the way to Hawaii — solo. He won first place in the Pacific Singlehanded Sailing Associations monohull division in 1988.

Mike Sudo, who is member of the Del Rey Yacht Club has his Beneteau 47.7, Macondo, depicted flying his traditional Trojan cardinal and gold spinnaker on the far right side of the painting. The loss of the California Yacht Club clubhouse is not only a loss to its members but to the entire sailing community. All sailors who compete in a CYC sponsored regatta are invited to the clubhouse for a party and the trophy presentation even if they are not members.

According to Brian Robertson at Fire Station No. 10 on Admiralty Way, the two firefighters who were injured while working to put out the fire are recuperating. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No boats were damaged in the fire. The California Yacht Club was already in the planning stages of remodeling so there will undoubtably be many more spinnaker parties in the sailing community’s future.
