Dramatic footage has captured the moment a 40-metre superyacht sank into the Mediterranean sea after being battered in a storm.

The 40-metre-long luxury vessel was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo overnight on Saturday when it got into trouble around 15km from Italy’s Catanzaro Marina.

Footage shows the yacht, named My Saga, rapidly disappearing beneath waves, as lifeboats appear to float beside it.

The captain sent out a distress call to the Port Authority of Crotone, with officials told the yacht was taking on a significant amount of water from the stern.

The Italian coastguard dispatched two patrol vessels and rescued all four passengers and five crew members on board.

A tugboat sent out at dawn was unable to save the superyacht from sinking because of worsening weather conditions, the Super Yacht Times reports. The Saga finally sank at around 1pm on Sunday.

The outlet reports the yacht, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was flying under the Cayman Islands flag with an all-Italian crew when it sunk.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.

The yacht named My Saga sank on Saturday

It comes after a £6 million superyacht sunk after it went up in flames in the UK on the Torquay harbourside.

The 85ft vessel was consumed by fire , with thick black smoking billowing into the sky.

Seized Russian superyacht to be sold at first auction of Ukraine war

The yacht reportedly drifted out into the harbour after the fire burnt through ropes securing it to the pier, but the vessel was later secured by the fire service.

A fire service statement revealed that the vessel contained approximately 8000 litres of diesel fuel.

Dramatic video shows superyacht sinking off Italian coast

Dramatic footage shows the moment a superyacht sank 17km off the coast of Italy - sparking the rescue of passengers and crew.

The luxury craft - belived to be Italian-built yacht My Saga - can be seen disappearing into the sea off Cantanzaro, the capital of the Calabria region, in the incident on Saturday.

Footage shows it quickly vanishing beneath the waves, leaving behind what appear to be lifeboats floating on the surface.

Four passengers and five crew were rescued, The National reports.

Local media reported they had been sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo when the yacht sank nine nautical miles - about 17km - offshore.

Italian coastguard the Guardia Costiera wrote on Twitter on Monday [in Italian, translated to English]: “In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina. Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes.”

Dramatic video captures the moment a massive 40-meter superyacht sank off the coast of Italy

  • A superyacht sunk off the coast of Southern Italy over the weekend.
  • Video of the boat's demise showed the ship sinking stern-first with its bow straight in the air.

A superyacht measuring nearly 130 feet sunk off the coast of southern Italy on Saturday, after members of the Italian Coast Guard rescued nine people from the submerging ship.

This weekend, the Italian press reported that the 39.4-meter motor yacht named "My Saga" sunk off the coast of Catanzaro Marina.

Video from the scene shows the massive boat teetering into the water before fully sinking stern-first.

Sky News reported that worsening weather conditions rendered it impossible for a rescue tugboat to bring the yacht to safety.

An investigation into what caused the ship to sink is underway, the outlet reported.

The yacht was built in Italy in 2007, according to Super Yacht Times, and was traveling from Gallipoli to Milazzo under a Cayman Islands flag with a full Italian crew when it sunk.

The moment a 140ft superyacht sunk off the coast off Italy was captured on camera after the huge ship was hit by a storm.

Listen to this article

According to the Super Yacht Times , the vessel called My Saga was travelling from Gallipoli in Turkey to Milazzo in Italy and was spotted flying a Cayman Islands flag.

Four passengers and five crew were rescued before the ship submerged into the sea and no injuries were reported.

The Italian coast guard said in a tweet: "In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina."

They added: "Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes."

According to reports, the captain sent out a distress call late at night during a storm because the ship was taking on a significant amount of water.

The superyacht, which was built in 2007, has room for up to 12 guests on board alongside accommodation for 7 crew members including the captain.

It comes after a British man died and six other people were injured when a luxury yacht smashed into rocks in Sardinia three weeks ago.

The 63-year-old, who has not been named but is understood to be the owner of the 70ft Magnum-type motor yacht involved in the crash, was killed in the accident around 8.40pm yesterday near Porto Cervo, in Sardinia.

It is thought the vessel - carrying a total of seven people - was swerving to avoid another boat near a group of islands known as Il Nibani that lie just off the coast when it hit the rocks and half-sunk, La Stampa reports.

Christened Storm and Portofino, the two newcomers both feature a highly optimized and efficient hull designed by Lateral Naval Architects. (All Simply Custom yachts have the same hull, in fact.) Each vessel also offers an impressive gross tonnage of approximately 2,500 to 2,700 GT. Spread across five decks, the living quarters offer ample space for entertaining and seven guest cabins. (The owner’s stateroom is located on the upper deck, while the six guest suites sit on the main deck.)

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Storm Superyacht

Storm and Portofino will be cleaner, greener cruisers, too. Low-emission propulsion is a major focus of the Simply Custom series, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis told Robb Report last October. “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

The two yachts have clear differences, though. Storm is characterized by a sleek, aggressive profile that “combines the elegant, flowing lines of a timeless Bentley coupe with a tapering aft end, giving that sense of speed and elegance from a bygone era,” according to H2 Yacht Design ’s founder and creative director Jonny Horsfield.

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Portofino Superyacht

Portofino, on the other hand, reflects the classic style of its namesake Italian fishing village. Horsfield says the yacht’s timeless design is contrasted by “ruthlessly modern” detailing, such as a flared bow and a dramatically shaped transom. Other hallmarks include a sculpted superstructure, tapered decks, and glass bulwarks.

“Both designs are flexible enough to accommodate any client preferences,” Horsfield adds.

To that end, the Simply Custom series is designed to simplify (and speed up) the customization process for owners without sacrificing quality. Sounds like a win-win.

Novonesis CEO Ester Baiget says most of the company's growth this year will come from higher volumes, whereas previous performance was boosted by higher prices. She says the company is able to sell more products to its existing customers after the $12.3 billion merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen increased its portfolio. Baiget spoke to Bloomberg TV's Tom Mackenzie.

Horror stories from nyc’s 8th ave. ‘strip of despair’ — where stabbings, drug use and public defecation are the norm.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Business owners and residents along Midtown Manhattan’s “Strip of Despair” are so frequently robbed and harassed by drug-addled “psychopaths” that they’ve stopped trying to resist — or even bother calling the cops for help.

“Almost every day someone comes into my store to steal,” said 45-year-old Arun Kumar, who owns A’s Coffee Spot on W. 39th St. and 8th Avenue.

“They take beer the most — they take it and walk out,” he said.

“It’s too dangerous to try and stop them.”

Kumar’s shop is located in a stretch of Midtown between Port Authority Bus Terminal and Penn Station that’s come to be known as the “8th Avenue Corridor,” where hard drugs are used in the open and emotionally disturbed people wander the streets screaming at passersby.

Several locals told The Post that they’re fed-up and scared of what the neighborhood has become — despite New York Mayor Eric Adams insisting on Monday that it’s actually getting better.

Recent data from the NYPD shows a mixed bag of progress for the Midtown South Precinct — which stretches from 9th Avenue to Lexington.

There have been 172 reported robberies so far this year, down 24% from the same period in 2023, but felony assaults are up nearly 12%, with 245 reported.

Grand larceny is down 16%, but petit larceny is up 11% and retail theft reports are up 3%.

Drug arrests are also up more than 25%.

But it’s clear that lawlessness remains rampant. The Post caught one man urinating in the street in broad daylight on Monday.

Alarmingly incoherent addicts passed out on the street are a common sight along 8th Avenue in Midtown South

Public defecation is also a common sight, residents and shop owners said.

Open drug use often escalates into violence.

The Post obtained horrific footage of a brutal knife fight in April between an alleged drug dealer and a user outside a building which led to one man being badly injured.

Last week, one woman was stabbed to death outside Port Authority, and an emotionally disturbed man was shot in the leg near West 33rd St. and Broadway — both in the same night.

Locals say many of the troublemakers are drawn to the neighborhood by a concentration of homeless shelters and drug addiction treatment clinics in the area.

A knife fight between purportedly a drug dealer and user back in April that left one gravely injured

“It’s like we’ve been bombed,” said resident Charles Pellegrino, 71, who’s lived in the neighborhood for nearly 30 years.

“It’s a bad situation. You see money exchanging, you see the crack pipes being lit, you see people fighting. You don’t want to dare get stuck in the middle of that.”

He added: “You never used to have the feeling you have now, a feeling of being unsafe in the middle of the day just walking around. Post-COVID, this neighborhood has been nuts.”

Pellegrino knows the danger first-hand. In November 2022, he was walking near his home when a stranger shoved him into a construction site — sending him to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder.

“My glasses shattered and I was lucky to avoid a major head injury,” he said.

Arun Kumar, 45, was slashed across the face while trying to stop an addict from stealing from his shop two years ago

Kumar, the coffee shop owner, was slashed in the face two years ago when he tried to stop a shoplifter from snatching an entire case of beer.

After that, he said he no longer intervenes when people come in to steal.

Ying Luo, who manages 39th and 9th Ave Grocery about a block from Kumar’s store, also said trying to stop brazen shoplifters isn’t worth the risk.

So, he’s resorted to pleading.

Residents of 8th Ave. have blamed a concentration of drug clinics and shelters for the problems

“I ask them to put it back but if they don’t, you just have to let them go,” the 33-year-old said.

He added: “I live in East Harlem, which is a lot safer than here. It’s getting worse — there is more crime, more drugs and more homelessness.”

Luo thinks the high tourist traffic in the neighborhood — driven by Times Square and the nearby transit hubs — draws the homeless to the area because tourists are easy marks for beggars and thieves.

“When the homeless beg for money, the tourists don’t want trouble and will give them money,” he said.

Tourists, meanwhile, said they’re terrified of the area, including 32-year-old Hilaria Rutini and her husband Philippo Paradiso, 39, who are visiting NYC from Italy for the first time.

Ying Luo has stopped calling the police when incidents occur after countless calls that we never responded to

“We don’t walk around here at night, it’s too scary. We prefer just to go to sleep,” said Rutini, who is staying in a hotel across from Port Authority.

“At night, this area is full of drug addicts.”

“If we come back, we will stay somewhere else, where there’s not so many homeless and drug addicts.”

Longtime residents don’t have the luxury of leaving when danger comes knocking — something the tenants of one apartment building on W. 39th and 9th Ave. experienced only two weeks ago.

“We had six tenants who couldn’t get out because there was someone smoking crack in the lobby,” said building super John Pormigiano, 59.

John Pormigiano, 59, is the superintendent at an apartment building off 9th Ave., and frequently sees filth and chaos

“The people were trapped for 15 to 20 minutes until finally I chased him out. He was really dirty, smelly and incoherent. You can’t even reason with them at all.”

He said numerous tenants called 911, but cops never bothered to show up.

Pormigiano isn’t the only one to complain that the police never show when they call for help. Kumar and Luo both told The Post they’ve stopped bothering to call 911 when they’re attacked after countless incidents in which they received no response.

“It’s a waste of time,” Luo said.

“You spend time on the phone describing the shoplifter but nothing gets done, so what’s the point? It’s not like the police will get my stuff back. The police won’t respond to small thefts.”

Mayor Eric Adams told The Post Monday that the NYPD’s hands have been tied by laws preventing them from arresting people just for being high in public.

He said officers were doing the best they could, adding that he’s done walkthroughs of the neighborhood and thinks things are improving.

“We’re doing a good job,” he said.

But residents aren’t seeing it.

“There’s always fights and psychopaths around here,” Pormigiano said.

“There was a fight right here on the corner around the middle of April where one guy was stabbed in the heart and the groin. They were both covered in blood. They’re like Gladiators.”

That fight broke out in broad daylight on the afternoon of April 16 on W. 39th and 8th Ave., where security footage shows one man slashing another, who defended himself with his shirt.

The disheveled pair finally came to blows and tumbled off camera before one was left grievously wounded.

“A guy just walked past here covered in s**t. He sits on the corner smoking crack. The smell makes you want to vomit,” Pormigiano said.

“They s**t on the street. They s**t on cars. We clean with a hose twice a week because everywhere smells like piss.”

Outside Port Authority on Monday morning tourists and commuters were greeted by puddles of vomit washed across the 9th Avenue exit. Steps away on W 40th St. a man relieved himself into a storm drain.

A homeless woman stood on the corner welcoming passersby into the city.

“I hope you get shot,” she said.

In this coastal town, rising seas exacerbate high-tide flooding

Anatomy of a flood, the post installed cameras along the main road of one n.c. town to document the many ways rising seas exacerbate high-tide flooding..

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C.

Nothing seemed amiss on a warm late-summer afternoon in this laid-back beach town south of Wilmington.

Surfers tested the waves rolling in from the Atlantic. Kayakers drifted across the sparkling bay just to the west. Bicyclists pedaled past colorful wood-frame houses with names such as Ship Faced and Sand Dollar Retreat.

But even on this postcard-perfect day, a threat was lurking — one that is growing more disruptive, more often, in coastal communities in the southeastern United States:

Sea-level rise.

In a matter of hours, a particularly high tide would once again arrive in this town of nearly 7,000 , overwhelming its outdated and overmatched infrastructure. The main drag of Canal Drive would once again become submerged by floodwaters.

The Washington Post had set up cameras in multiple places along the road, capturing in real time the many ways that ever-higher tides exacerbate flooding, and why local efforts to cope with this growing scourge are often falling short in communities where seas are rising the fastest.

The videos illustrate how, even on days without major storms, rising waters are compromising stormwater infrastructure, overtopping shorelines, elevating groundwater, and combining with rain to make flooding more persistent and more insidious over time.

To capture the flood, the Post installed cameras in five locations.

The images add to growing evidence captured by scientists who, day after day, are documenting the frequency of these sunny-day floods in an area where sea levels have risen 7 inches since 2010 — among the highest in the country , according to a Post analysis.

In several coastal North Carolina communities, researchers have installed sensors inside stormwater drains and cameras along the streets above to record the causes and number of floods.

In Carolina Beach alone, they have documented 60 days over the past year when Canal Drive flooded, many of those during clear weather. That’s far more than the four to eight high-tide floods projected by the federal government for the same period, based on measurements from a nearby tide gauge.

The Drowning South

Tide gauges designed to record changes in sea levels “are only painting part of the picture” of what is happening on land, said Katherine Anarde , an assistant professor of coastal engineering at North Carolina State University who is helping to lead the research.

She and her colleagues, working to decipher a fuller picture in specific places, keep arriving at the same conclusion.

“It is flooding more than we know,” she said.

Two days in Carolina Beach— the first clear and calm, the second marked by rain — show why fixing the deepening problems of sea rise poses such a daunting task.

A sunny late-August day in Carolina Beach. In the early afternoon, around low tide, Post journalists set up time-lapse cameras in several spots along Canal Drive to capture what happens as the evening high tide arrives.

2:45 p.m. — 7:15 p.m..

As the tide rolls in, a stormwater pipe at Seahorse Lane steadily becomes submerged by salt water.

The stormwater pipes and drains along this stretch of Carolina Beach were built generations ago, when they were above the high-tide line. But as this part of the southeast Atlantic coast experiences one of the most rapid sea-level surges on Earth, high tides regularly swallow the infrastructure that is supposed to drain city streets, leaving water nowhere to go.

“The higher tides are lingering more often. When we do have an event, it’s multiple days,” said Jeremy Hardison, planning and development director for Carolina Beach. “There’s definitely more water in the pipes and drains than there used to be.”

City officials have worked to combat the worsening problems, but it’s an uphill battle. They have installed backflow preventers to try to keep seawater from filling outflow pipes, though such retrofitting can have uneven results. The harsh coastal environment speeds wear and tear. Barnacles grow on the edges of valves, compromising their watertight seal.

“Water doesn’t need much to penetrate in,” Hardison said. “In some areas, it has helped; in some areas, it hasn’t performed as we thought it should.”

Local leaders also have mulled raising roads and building more bulkheads, he said. But such approaches can prove expensive, face regulatory hurdles and public skepticism, and come with the risk of unintended consequences.

Outflow pipe

superyacht storm

On this day, seawater eventually fills a pipe near Seahorse Lane, causing water to spew from a drain 45 feet away onto Canal Drive.

6:40 p.m. — 7:30 p.m.

As rising seawater fills a stormwater drain, the excess quickly floods onto Canal Drive.

Besides overwhelming drainpipes, rising sea levels also push up underground water levels — commonly known as the water table.

“As the sea level gets higher and higher,” Anarde said, “the groundwater table also increases.”

That means there’s only so much capacity for the ground to absorb any rain that might fall. “So even just a minor rainfall event can lead to ponding in low-lying areas and just can exacerbate the flooding in the roadway or in yards,” she said.

As high tide approaches on this clear day, puddles of water appear from seemingly nowhere in certain spots along the street and at the base of a nearby power pole and stop sign.

As rising seas force groundwater to the surface, water starts to bubble up from cracks in the pavement.

The most obvious manifestation of rising seas is the higher tides that more easily send water creeping over shorelines.

That is what happens at this empty lot along Canal Drive — one of several places unprotected by a bulkhead.

5:15 p.m. — 7:50 p.m.

The incoming tide submerges a low-lying lot before spilling onto the main road. It pushes through marsh and across the once-dry land, turning it into a temporary pond. As sunset approaches, it continues to spill over onto the nearby street, covering it completely and making it impassable for many vehicles.

In a handful of hours, this combination of factors transforms a long stretch of Canal Drive into a canal. And most of that flooding arrives swiftly, overtaking the road in barely half an hour around high tide. As dusk arrives, the water is more than a foot deep in places, despite the clear, calm weather.

The city often must close the street to traffic on days with tides like this, said Hardison, the city planner. “It’s a given,” he said.

Police officers arrive to lower a series of gates the city installed several years ago that warn of the latest saltwater intrusion. “Road closed,” the signs read. “Saltwater flooding.”

A few drivers in trucks plow through anyway, sending ripples of water to lap off nearby carports and garage doors.

As sea levels continue to rise, Anarde says, these types of floods will happen during more high tides, linger longer and cause only more damage. “It’s just going to get worse,” she said.

By nightfall, the unstoppable tide stretches along Canal Drive and up side streets. Floodwaters creep up driveways and meander under some raised houses. Televisions flicker inside nearby homes, and the light from streetlamps dances across the water that has swallowed the road outside.

The remnants of Hurricane Idalia are barreling past the Carolinas. On this day, more than 3 inches of rain fall on Carolina Beach — not insignificant but also not an unheard-of amount for a storm along the coast. The day offers a firsthand lesson in how sea-level rise is making “compound” flooding more severe.

A steady rain settles in over Carolina Beach. “When it’s high tide and it rains, there’s nowhere for that water to go,” said Hardison, the city planner. “If there’s nowhere for that water to go, then it’s going to back up and fill up like a bathtub.”

3:30 p.m. — 6 p.m.

Stormwater pipes again fill up with seawater as high tide arrives, leaving no room for rainwater to drain.

Surging sea levels combined with even modest rains lead to what scientists call compound flooding , and it is happening more often in more places.

Pipes that once would have drained by gravity are now filled with salt water, leaving no escape for precipitation.

6:50 p.m. — 7:30 p.m.

“The system gets overwhelmed,” Anarde said of the rain that falls hard along Canal Drive. “As sea levels continue to rise and we see tides propagating higher and higher, plus the frequency of these rainfall events, we’re going to see more-frequent flooding for a lot of communities — even at moderate or lower tides.”

As darkness arrives, Canal Drive is once again submerged, this time even deeper than the day before. Authorities once again lower the gates to block the street. It will be hours before the floodwaters subside.

Over the past year, researchers have logged dozens more flooding events along Canal Drive than official estimates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whose scientists say high-tide floods in the South are already happening five times as often as just several decades ago.

Federal tide gauges “are not actually intended to measure flooding on land,” said Miyuki Hino , a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill environmental social scientist.

It is a gap scientists are busy trying to better understand as this type of flooding worsens. “Measuring the floods correctly is a prerequisite for measuring the human impacts correctly,” said Hino, Anarde’s research partner.

As time goes on, and the trend continues — seas are predicted to rise as much as an additional foot along this stretch of coast by 2050 — these floods will force hard questions in coastal towns.

“Absent significant investments in adaptation, we’ll see a rapid increase in the incidence of chronic flooding relative to what we are seeing right now,” Hino said.

And definitely not just in Carolina Beach.

“A lot of coastal towns across North Carolina and across the U.S. are facing this problem,” Anarde said. “The last 10 years are not a good indicator of what the next 10 years will look like.”

How we reported the story

Over two days late last August, The Post set up cameras in various locations along Canal Drive in Carolina Beach to capture flooding during multiple high tides. Each camera took a photo every 10 seconds. The photos were combined in postproduction to create the time-lapse videos in this story.

The Post’s visit coincided with a “ king tide ” — a term commonly used to describe some of the highest predicted annual tides at a particular location. These events occur several times a year in many coastal areas, and offer an opportunity to see what average water levels might look like in the future as sea levels continue to rise.

Water levels measured in the Carolina Beach Yacht Basin

The approach to capturing the multiple drivers of flooding was informed by conversations with Katherine Anarde and Thomas Thelen at North Carolina State University, Miyuki Hino at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Adam Gold of the Environmental Defense Fund. A paper they and other colleagues published in 2023 detailed how they used storm drain sensors and roadway cameras to determine that flooding in Beaufort, N.C., was happening more often than nearby tide gauge levels would have predicted.

Researchers continue to monitor the impacts and causes of such flooding in multiple communities in North Carolina, including in Carolina Beach, New Bern and Carteret County — part of an effort known as the Sunny Day Flooding Project .
