CAT OR TRI?

Taken from The Design File, Tony Grainger Yacht Design.

“CATS have become more popular for cruising mainly because of the accommodation space and privacy they provide and because for a given length they are faster and cheaper to build than a trimaran.  TRIS, on the other hand, provide good performance through a wider range of conditions than catamarans, and can also be effective for cruising by utilizing flare above the waterline in the main hull, and by fitting aft cabins where additional privacy is required in the accommodation layout. Apart from the accommodation, the trimaran provides a more forgiving motion in a sea way and better resistance to pitching if the hull shapes are well designed, and the wide beam allows it to carry more sail in fresh conditions. Against these advantages is the fact that a cat will require less berthing space and is likely to be more maneuverable in close quarters if twin diesels are fitted. Also, the cat will have a more steady motion than a tri while sailing downwind.”

I built my first multihull in the 70’s and it was a Trimaran, foam cored, TriStar design, a great multihull.  Now I am building a cat for my wife and I, mainly because of the room, very wide main salon and stateroom and big aft deck and flybridge.  The Tri was maybe a bit more sea kindly than the cat will be, but besides not having to build a third hull, she will be a bit faster as well as maybe a bit more economical.

Can I have what I want ?

But you must stay in the boundaries of the designer structural requirements i.e.. mast placement, weight to be carried and where. All the multihulls we have built over the last 42 years, have been what the clients have wanted, inside and out. Once they find the size they think will work, we find the basic design and designer for their dream platform to create it.

The final look is up to you, either with your drawing or pictures or work with one of several concept artists we know to help. Same with the interior, your interior designer, pictures or cut out from magazine of things you would like or we can line you up with someone to help. You work directly with these people, pay them directly to go as far as you want or need to, the do not work for Pedigree.

How long does it take to build your dream?

Based on our first price estimate, a basic 60′ power or sail typically takes about 24 months. This would be a very nice Cat, but not a lot of fancy, expensive items on board (gold faucets etc.) Engines, hydraulic steering, electric heads, windlass, gen.set, etc., very nice, but not a lot of goodies. The second price we show is with almost everything clients really want onboard, Watermaker, A/C, Shore boat, TV (s), fancy wood decor and custom items and electronics. This, of course, also adds more time to construct, maybe 6 months, You can also have us build to a certain stage and you take her home and finish the build or stretch out the time to build to fit your schedule or investments. If you add 6 months to each of these times, it would be for a 75′-85′ and 6 months to that and you would be in the 100′ range.

Taking her home from here or maybe cruise the San Juan islands, inside passage to Alaska first. Clients have also taken them to Vancouver and had them shipped to Florida or hire a crew to deliver them to where they want.

Why does Pedigree Catamarans, Inc. post our prices online?

We have been building multihulls since 1975 and we know how many hours each boat should take to build, even custom boats since we do not build production boats.  Other companies may not have built or built enough boats to determine the cost.  Granted boat costs vary directly with the customer’s requirements, however the hull build should not vary much.

Also, we do not have “salesmen.”   We are a owner/operated business that talks directly with each customer based on our 42 years of boating and cruising experience.  We believe that you want a cat of your own, not what a production builder thinks everyone should have.

I would be very leery of a company who wants large deposits up front and can’t provide basic prices to a customer.  What we are hearing now from people that have paid a large deposit up front, only find the builder wants more and more and exceeded their guess of the cost and time line.  Then the worst, they want more money or they will sell the cat to someone else, holding it for ransom from the highest bidder,  Our clients chose to pay as we build and the cat is 100% theirs from the start and definitely no large deposit up front.

How much does a custom catamaran cost?

The cost of a custom Pedigree catamaran, constructed with foam core, composite construction is very close to that of a production built yacht.  The advantage is, you will have exactly what you want and the disadvantage is, it will take a little while to build.

Charter cats are generally a lot less expensive. They do not need the big ticket luxury items, such as water makers, A/C, big gen. sets, fancy interiors, etc.

When we have an opening to start a new project, you can have just the hulls built and finish the catamaran yourself at a considerable savings at your home port.  If you wish, we can provide you with a cat at what ever stage you like. For example, we can fit the engines and aide in completion and when you are ready to launch, we can arrange that as well.

Most of our catamarans are fully loaded and ready for cruising.  We have listed the average cost clients have spent on our amenities and pricing page. For a list of some of amenities included in a Pedigree Cat and the average prices, click on the “Amenities & Pricing” button available from most pages on our site.

Over the last 20 years, the clients have chosen to pay as we build and they have approved to have done as well as what we purchase for them, engines etc..

All and all, we can provide just about anything you and your budget can imagine. Our goal is to get you out there to enjoy the fun with  the exact Catamaran you have always wanted.

I think we are about the only builder that shows you the price you might spend on you dream, it’s up to you and what you want and need.

Why do Production Cats depreciate so much more than a quality custom built cat?

Several reasons. One might be, that every cat produced is probably from the same mold and in most cases, several years old and not updated or no improvements incorporated over any previously produced. Thus no real reason to get a new one if you can get the same one used for a lot less. The owners must lower their asking price far enough below the new ones that it will make it desirable. The price on the same new cat, next year, must be in line pricewise, in the marketing field to be sold, thus last years model must be substantially lower.

The production cats do not provide the clients with what they expected in a catamaran. Lacking in performance, require a lot of power to move them at a reasonably expected speed, to narrow to give the stability and the room onboard they were led to believe they would have. Deeper draft than expected, very heavy solid fiberglass construction, noisy, sinkable, sweat and hard to maintain a comfortable temperature inside. Most are imported and can not be used for charter in US waters.

One of our custom built multihulls came up for sale, built in 1980 and sold for $60,000 more than it cost the owners to have it built back then.

Even today, we have people trying to buy the clients cat we are constructing from the client and at a substantial amount more than they have into their dream. Problem is, this is their dream and it is not up for sale.

Let us build your custom dream yacht!

Gary habersetzer started building multihulls in 1975 in washington..

In the late 70’s, the first Airex foam core Trimaran in the USA, a TriStar 42′ “Amenity” was built by Gary.  The designer, Ed Horstman was as excited as he was to build a composite Multihull and ended up writing an instruction manual based on Airex information in conjunction with ABS standards.  At that time, there was no one in the USA that was building composite Multihulls.

10 Best Sailboat Brands (And Why)

10 Best Sailboat Brands | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 20, 2023

‍ There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.

Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.

While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.

With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.

Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.

But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.

Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.

The best sailboat brands will make your life as a sailor a lot easier and more fun. The best sailboat brands have, for decades if not centuries, mastered the art of woodworking. They've dedicated their skills and immense amount of their time to designing and manufacturing nothing but the best quality of sailboats in the industry.

So if you've been looking for the best sailboat brands from all over the world, you've come to the right place. We'll discuss the best of the best, something that will give you a perfect getaway from your normal life.

Table of contents

‍ Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat

Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.

Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.

As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.

For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.

A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit

You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.

  • Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
  • Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
  • Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
  • The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position

GPS Chartplotter

Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.

A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.

For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.

Electric Winch System

This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.

An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.

More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Reverse Osmosis Watermaker

This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.

As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.

Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.

Wide and Clutter-free Deck

While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.

This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.

With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.

You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

The Best Sailboat Brands and Why

1. hallberg-rassy.

Hallberg-Rassy is a Swedish yacht maker that's very well-known in the blue water cruising circles for making some of the highest quality and sturdiest sailboats. For many sailors, this is the number one sailboat brand as it offers absolute comfort, utmost safety, and good and easy handling.

This brand is not only synonymous with sturdy construction but you won't worry getting soaking wet while out there on the water. This is because it has a well-protected deck and cockpit, finished with nice woodwork, and has a powerful engine with a big tankage just to ensure that you can go on long voyages.

When designing its sailboats, this brand has made it a norm to add some features that stand out from the rest. For instance, the bowsprit is an integral feature that makes sailing a Hallberg-Rassy quite easy and much enjoyable. This is because it grants easy access to and from the deck. Its electric anchor winches facilitate smooth maneuvering. Even more, its large steering wheels makes it much easier to control the boat even in the roughest of conditions. In essence, this brand has features that provide good control and an extra sense of safety.

Although this brand has evolved over the years, you'll easily recognize it even from a distance. And why is this? A Hallberg-Rassy never goes out of style. This is a unique sailboat brand that has always stayed true to its principles and concept. No matter which part of the world you go, Hallberg-Rassy will remain the undisputed king of blue water cruising.

Best Cruising Catamarans

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: July 1, 2021

multihulls

Cruising catamarans have been around for decades, but early models—often plywood and fiberglass vessels built by their owners from plans and kits, kept the boats on the fringes of mainstream sailing. That all changed, though, as big roomy cats were discovered by sailors who went off to charter in the Caribbean, where the multihulls proved their worth as comfortable liveaboard and party boats.

Today’s bluewater catamarans roam the globe, carrying families to exotic destinations across the Pacific and beyond. Just as with their monohull cousins, there is no best catamaran. Instead there is a wide variety of designs, ranging from small catamarans that offer the ease of maintenance a couple might enjoy to performance catamarans capable of easily knocking off 250-mile days. Today, the best catamaran brands offer a range of size models and layouts that can be optimized for an owner sailing with family and friends, or for the charter market, where there’s a demand for four, five and even six cabins worth of accommodations.

The most prolific catamaran manufacturers are in France and South Africa where yards include both large-run production builders and niche companies building fewer than 10 boats a year.

The best cruising catamarans offer good load-carrying ability and respectable performance. As with any sailboat , a modern catamaran’s design is a result of compromises. Daggerboards or keels? Galley up or galley down? Spacious owner’s cabin or extra bunks? There are lots of options to choose from—and that’s what makes looking at these sailboats fun!

Here, then is an eclectic A to Z list of some of the best catamarans that have helped shaped the evolution of how we live and sail on two hulls.

Antares 44i

Antares 44i catamaran

Now built in Argentina as a full-fledged, bluewater catamaran and cruiser that can be safely operated by a shorthanded couple or family crew, the Antares 44i features a fully covered cockpit with a quartet of big, standard solar panels recessed within the hardtop, one example of a yacht capable of long-range passagemaking.

Atlantic 42

Atlantic 42 Catamaran

Almost 30 years ago, yacht designer Chris White revolutionized catamaran design with the first in his series of Atlantic cats, the primary feature of which was the innovative mid-ship sailing cockpit forward of the main cabin. The smallest in the Atlantic line, the 42 remains White’s most popular design ever.

Bahia 46 catamaran

Fountaine-Pajot has built so many outstanding cruising catamarans that it’s difficult to narrow down any single boat, but we’ve always been fans of the good-looking, well-thought-out Bahia 46. At 46 feet, the boat is large enough for offshore forays and has plenty of volume; with its simple but powerful sail plan, it’s also an excellent performer.

Catana 471 catamarans

Beginning around 1996, the French builder Catana was one of the first companies to manufacture fully found cruising cats for private ownership, and this Christophe Barreau design, which enjoyed a nearly 10-year production run from 1997-2006, was emblematic of this first generation of safe, fun, long-legged offshore voyagers.

Catana 50 catamaran

When it comes to speed, light boats are fast ones. And if you wish to save weight, that means exotic modern materials like carbon. Catana now infuses the laminates of their entire production line with carbon fiber, and for this list, we’ve chosen the Catana 50 Carbon, one of the zippiest cats now crossing oceans.

Gemini 105M

Gemini 105M catamaran

Pioneering catamaran sailor, builder and designer Tony Smith launched the first of his 33-foot Gemini 105M’s (10.5 meters = 33′) in 1993, and soon after found a ready and willing stream of sailors enamored of the boat’s compact size, affordable price tag, and such innovations as the nifty lifting rudder and transom steps.

Gunboat 62 catamaran

Built between 2000-2005, the Gunboat 62 firmly established the Gunboat brand: go-anywhere cats that applied race-boat technology to a world-cruising platform. Hull no. 1, Tribe, was built for company founder Peter Johnstone, who then spent a year-and-a-half cruising with his family, smiling all the way.

Kronos 45 catamaran

French builder Henri Wauquiez is best known for his long career building monohulls, but the Kronos 45 cat, which he launched in 1992, was ahead of her time. Classic lines, the aft “targa bar” over the cockpit, the louvered coach roof windows, even the distinctive stripes on her hull: the Kronos 45 remains timeless.

Lagoon 380 catamaran

No roundup of cruising cats would be complete without several Lagoon entries, and the best of that impressive bunch might well be the Lagoon 380. Originally launched in 1999, and revered for its combination of quality, volume and performance, with over 740 boats built the 380 is still going strong.

Lagoon 440 catamaran

Launched five years after the breakthrough 380, the Lagoon 440 was an evolutionary design that featured a raised flybridge helm station, a unique “gullwing” configuration below the bridge deck, expanded windows in the hull and much more. With 400 boats built in a 6-year production run, the 440 was an unqualified success.

Lagoon 620 catamaran

How big can a production cat, still operable by a short-handed crew, really be? The builders at Lagoon discovered that 62-feet hit a sweet spot in the marketplace, and have sold over 70 boats since its introduction in 2010. The centerpiece of this design is the sensational steering station atop the flybridge, with expansive views of the sea and sky.

Leopard 40 catamaran

With an unmatched pedigree – designed by premier multihull naval architects Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, built by the prestigious Robertson & Caine boatyard in South Africa, and commissioned by chartering giant The Moorings – the Leopard 40 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cruising World ’s Import Boat of the Year in 2005.

Louisiane 37

Louisiane 37 catamaran

Based on the famous French racing cat Charente-Maritime, the Louisiane 37, designed by Joubert/Nivelt and launched by builder Fountaine-Pajot in 1983, was a light, fast liveaboard cruiser with full accommodations that represented a radical departure from the hefty British cats that preceded it.

Maine Cat 30

Maine Cat 30 catamaran

One of the more versatile and clever cats ever created, the central feature of the cool Maine Cat 30 is the open bridge deck/living room sandwiched between the hulls and canopied by a rigid, permanent hard top (the comfortable accommodations/ staterooms are stationed in the hulls). Ideal for a winter in the Bahamas but with the ability to sail offshore, it’s a boat for all seasons and reasons.

Manta 42 catamaran

Built in Florida and beloved by the owners of the over 120 boats built during the company’s existence from 1993 to 2009, the Manta Catamarans range included 38-, 40- and 44-foot cats. For this exercise, however, we’re heralding the original Manta 42, which won the Best Value Overall prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year contest.

Moorings 4800/Leopard 48

Leopard 48 catamaran

Another Leopard/Moorings collaboration built by the wizards at Robertson & Caine (though this boat was designed by fellow South African Alex Simonis), the Leopard 48 was another CW Boat of the Year winner with all the contemporary bells and whistles: forward cockpit, flybridge helm station and solid hardtop dodger, just to name a few.

Nautitech 441

Nautitech 441 catmaran

The Best Multihull Under 45 Feet: So said the CW judging panel in the 2013 Boat of the Year competition, regarding the Nautitech 441. But what makes this versatile platform so intriguing are the different helm set-ups. The 441 employs a single wheel, to starboard, ideal for solo sailors, while the 442 has a pair of helm stations aft.

Outremer 5X

Catamaran

A state-of-the-art all-oceans cat that exemplifies how far multihull design has come, the 59-foot Outremer 5X was a winner on both sides of the Atlantic, taking top honors in the European Boat of the Year competition in 2013, and following up as the Best Full-Size Multihull in CW ’s contest a year later.

Click here to see more cats from Outremer.

St. Francis 50

St. Francis 50

The flagship of the proud St. Francis line – built in South Africa since 1990 to designs by local legends Lavranos Marine Design – the St. Francis 50 is another “luxury cat” that shares much in common with an earlier 48-foot sister-ship, but packs even more payload into its roomier lines.

Click here to read more about the St. Francis 50

Seawind 1000

Seawind 1000 catamaran

Founded by Aussie surfer and sailor Richard Ward in 1982, the 33-foot Seawind 1000 is easily the most popular cruising cat ever built in Australia (the company has since moved its manufacturing and management operations to Vietnam). Roomy and airy, these cats dot the coastline of eastern Oz.

Seawind 1160

1160 catamaran

If the Seawind 1000 was a minimalist approach to cruising cats, the 38-foot Seawind 1160 is the flip side of the coin, a full-fledged long-range voyager. Among the reasons it was named CW ’s Most Innovative boat for 2007 is the unique “tri-folding” door that stashes overhead to open up the saloon and cockpit into a spacious living area.

Click here to read more about the Seawind 1160.

Sunsail 384

Sunsail 384 catamaran

Every sailboat is a compromise, and in the case of the Sunsail 384 (also sold privately as the Leopard 38) that’s a good thing, because designers Morrelli & Melvin and builder Robertson and Caine got the balance just right with this relatively small catamaran. With four cabins, the 384 can carry the same size bareboat charter crowd as her larger siblings, but does so with a decided bounce in her step. Named CW’s Import Boat of the Year in 2010, you can gauge the success of the design by the grins on the crew as they barrel down Sir Francis Drake channel in the British Virgin Islands.

Victoria 67

Victoria 67 catamaran

The French design office of Berret Racoupeau drafted the lines of Fountaine-Pajot’s new flagship, introduced in 2013, a magnificent world-girdling voyaging catamaran. Like other giant cats launched in recent years, the boat features a sensational upper deck with all sail controls, helm and lounging stations.

Wharram Tanaroa

Wharram catamaran

No list of influential multihulls would be complete without the work of James Wharram, and while Tangaroa wasn’t a production cat by any means, it showcases the British designer’s respect for ancient Polynesian craft. Wharram sailed this 23-foot-6-inch “double-hulled canoe” across the Atlantic in the 1950s, and sold countless plans for similar boats for decades afterwards.

High seas, high stakes: American Magic’s thrilling bid for the 37th America’s Cup

O ur chase boat was pushing its limits, bouncing up and down on the water at 20+ knots as we tried to keep up with the Patriot on a beautiful, sunny day in Barcelona. It was a futile attempt; the futuristic sailboat zoomed out of sight in almost an instant.

This was my second day visiting the American Magic team at the bustling Spanish harbour, laden with superyachts and other gigantic vessels, as they were getting ready for the 37th America’s Cup, one of the strangest competitions in the world.

If you don’t know what Amerca’s Cup is, let me tell you, you’re missing out. It’s the oldest international sporting trophy, dating back to 1851. The prestigious sailing competition pits the world's best sailors and most advanced yachts against each other.

Only four nations (United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland) have won the America’s Cup in over 170 years. Emirates Team New Zealand, after defeating Oracle Team USA in 2017 and defending the title in 2021 against Italy, is the most successful team in modern history with four wins.

The 37th edition will be held in Barcelona from August to October 2024, hence why all teams are testing the waters there, literally and figuratively. The current defender is Emirates Team New Zealand, which will face the winner of the Challenger Selection Series, the Louis Vuitton Cup.

One of the challenger teams is the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic, a prominent team with a long and rich history.

Formed in 2018 by Hap Fauth, Roger Penske, and Doug DeVos, New York Yacht Club American Magic aims to reclaim the America's Cup, which the club has held for 132 years since 1851. The team faced a dramatic setback in the 36th America's Cup when their AC75 'Patriot' capsized during a leading semi-final race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

For the 37th America's Cup, American Magic signed Tom Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and renowned foiling sailor, partnering with Paul Goodison. They introduced AC75 cyclors and refined their systems with SRAM. They also formed 'Quantum Racing powered by American Magic' to develop young and female sailors.

Led by CEO Mike Cazer and Design Coordinator Scott Ferguson, the team launched their new AC75 'Patriot' in May 2024 (see video below) and immediately started testing. This effort represents their best chance in decades to bring the Cup back to New York.

The Patriot is not dissimilar to other boats taking in the competition, which isn’t much of a surprise, as the winning team dictates basically every parameter of the race, including what kind of boats are used, which all challenger teams have to adhere to.

The AC75 racing yachts are very different from the white sailboats you might be accustomed to. They have a monohull construction (unlike the double-hulled catamaran, for example), feature wing-like sailing hydrofoils mounted under the hull, a soft wing sail, and no keel.

“I'm still amazed by how exciting it is to see the AC75s barreling down the racecourse at four times the speed of the wind,” says Aaron Perry, Global Platform Design Lead at American Magic. “If you're on board and raise your head out of the cockpit, you'd be feeling near hurricane-strength wind speeds. A Category One hurricane is 64 knots, and that's just about what you'd be feeling on the boat.”

A sailing hydrofoil is a marvel of nautical engineering that transforms sailboats into high-speed machines by lifting the hull above water and dramatically reducing drag.

Here's the magic (pun intended): as the boat accelerates, water flows over and under hydrofoil wings mounted below the hull. These foils create a pressure difference, generating lift similar to how aeroplane wings work.

What makes for a winning design starts with the takeoff of the boat. The hull is in the water, and the sails provide thrust at low speed. As the boat speeds up, the foils, which are stainless steel slivers in the water, begin to provide lift, and the hull slowly lifts out of the water.

The underbody is shaped like a canoe to reduce wet surface and hydrodynamic drag as you accelerate. Eventually, the hull is completely out of the water, and the hydrofoils alone balance its nearly seven-ton weight.

The most insane thing about the Partiot – and other AC75 racing yachts – is that no engine or motor pushes the vessel forward; its forward motion is powered by wind only. There are eight people on board the boat: four responsible for manoeuvring it and four cyclors (cyclists-sailors) generating power for the hydraulics.

“You do get thrown around a lot, experiencing a couple of Gs through turns,” explains Paul Goodison MBE, one of the helmsmen of the Patriot. “It's almost like driving a go-kart, where you're wobbling around in your seat, and your head gets rocked around.”

The physicality is really different between the different roles. A certain amount of power has to be produced to move all the sails on this boat, and that's primarily down to the four guys who form the power unit, the cyclists on board.

“You can only move [the sails and wings] as fast as the guys can produce the power,” adds Paul. “The cyclists are producing phenomenal amounts of power, averaging between 450-500 watts for 20 minutes, which is mind-blowing.”

As a huge fan of physical fitness and endurance, I was fascinated by the cyclors. It’s almost unfathomable what those guys go through while on the boat.

The current design (it changes from cup to cup) requires American Magic cyclors to face backwards in a recumbent position, not really seeing anything apart from the scenes mounted in front of them.

Although the type of boat the teams are using is the same, only American Magic uses a recumbent bike setup to power the hydraulics. All while wearing full sailing suits designed specifically for them by Helly Hansen.

Helly Hansen worked closely with American Magic to design the outfit for everyone on board, including the cyclors. The Foil X Jacket (retailer link) is a good example of this collaboration; better still, you can buy the jacket and pretend you're a member of the team like I did when I was there.

The brand says the waterproof jacket was inspired by the “X” patterns that carbon reinforcement yarns create on American Magic’s boat sails and features the HELLY TECH Professional 3-layer fabrics that offer the highest levels of waterproof and breathability, as well as next-level flexibility through 4-way stretch performance.

Not all Helly Hansen products designed for the team make their way to the public, but the technology used in the garments will be implemented in the brand's products. After all, Helly Hansen is trusted by thousands of professionals, including RNLI and other emergency service members, and I'm sure they could use high-performance, hard-wearing gear.

“We power the sails. Anytime the guys are trimming the sails, we need to produce more power. It's not a constant all-out effort,” says Ashton Lambie, one of the cyclors. “There are points where we need to produce more power and points where we maintain a steady pace.”

The race is only 20 minutes or so, so cyclors need to be able to generate a lot of power quite quickly. They aren’t your skinny Tour de France riders; cyclors often come from a track cyclist background. Think Chris Hoy and co with their enormous legs.

Cyclors need to pass a test in which they generate 450W for 20 minutes straight to be considered for the American Magic team. After seeing the boat fly in the water on the second day, journalists attending the event, such as myself, jumped on the bikes to see how long they could last; I managed around 60 seconds at 450W before my legs turned to jelly.

To maintain their physiques, American Magic team members have to train a lot. Cyclors like Ashton are in the gym three days a week, sailing three to five days a week and fitting in one or two long rides if they can.

“Some guys enjoy riding outside, but I focus on our recumbent setups to mimic the boat conditions,” Ashton explains. “Platforms like Zwift make it fun. There was a group of three of us on the recumbents yesterday, and we did the Mega Pretzel route on Zwift. It's a big loop, and it’s a good way to pass the time while training.”

Thanks to all the workouts, the cyclors are getting bigger and more muscular by the day – Ashton added 15 kg to his overall mass and increased his bench press by 40 pounds – but since there is a weight limit for each person on the vessel, this means the other four members of the stuff have to lose weight, so the cyclors can get bigger.

The weight limit for the eight guys on board averages around 87.5 kg,” explains Paul. “For every kilo I'm below that, one of the cyclists can be above it. It's a trade-off because I don't need to produce power, so I try to get as small as I can so the cyclists can be bigger and stronger.”

All that indoor training comes at a price, though. I was told that some of the cyclors are vitamin D deficient because they spend so much time indoors. Considering that most of them have been living in Barcelona for a year and a half, it’s crazy that they don’t get enough sunshine.

“It's similar for all of us. We're either in the office or on the water sailing, usually covered with helmets and goggles, so there's limited sun exposure,” Paul explains. “Especially through the winter months, many of us are iron and vitamin D deficient, so we take supplements to stay stocked. Now that the weather is getting better, we need about 15 minutes of sun exposure daily.”

I couldn’t help but notice that both Asthon and Paul wore Garmin watches , so naturally, I had to ask them if they used their smartwatches for training. Ashton says he wears a Garmin every day to maximise sleep and training and monitor overall fatigue. Not surprisingly, Paul says he also uses his Garmin “all the time” for training and to see how much work he's doing.

How will the American Magic team fair at the 37th America’s Cup? Only time will tell. The team seems confident, and the racing yacht is amazing, so there is hope for the New York Yacht Club to reclaim the trophy.

I’m sure they wouldn’t mind lifting the cup above their heads after winning, as the American Magic effort costs upwards of 100 million dollars to execute. Even if that doesn’t happen, there is always the 38th Cup in a few years time…

High seas, high stakes: American Magic’s thrilling bid for the 37th America’s Cup

Electric boats

Flying electric ferries battle to smoothly sail commuters over the wave crests.

Avatar for Micah Toll

As electric boats slowly gain market share among recreational boaters, a different breed of silent, efficient speed boats is now targetting commuters. Hydrofoil electric ferries are coming to a river or lake near you, and multiple companies are working to make it happen.

I’ve had the pleasure of covering electric boats for years, where I’ve seen just about everything the nascent industry has to offer. But it’s the hydrofoil electric boats that are making the biggest departure from the norm.

Compared to traditional V-hull or catamaran vessels routinely used as ferries, hydrofoil boats use significantly less energy to travel the same distance on the water. Hydrofoils, which work like an airplane’s wing placed underwater, lift the entire boat’s hull into the air. With significantly lower resistance, the boat essentially flies while using as little as 20% of the same energy required by a planning boat.

candela p-12 ferry

Hydrofoil boats have been around for decades, but more recent advances have replaced older internal combustion engines with electric motors, taking these boats to the next level.

The biggest name in the game is undoubtedly Stockholm-based Candela , which first sailed its prototype hydrofoil electric boat back in 2016 and has been in production since 2018. The company began with multiple models of electric speedboats for recreational boating. Now, its newest model, the Candela P-12, is going commercial for use as a ferry in rivers, lakes, and archipelagos like around its home waters in Stockholm.

The P-12 has been undergoing water trials since last year , ahead of its first commercial operations.

One of its first operators will employ it on the world’s cleanest lake, Lake Manapōuri in New Zealand, where it is expected to replace 240 tons of CO2 emissions each year by replacing combustion engine boats.

american made sailing catamarans

While Candela undoubtedly leads the industry, other hydrofoil electric boats have cropped up in the last couple years. Vessev , an Auckland, New Zealand-based startup, has just announced the successful completion of two weeks of intensive water testing for its VS-9 electric hydrofoil ferry.

“We have been pushing the VS—9 less than two weeks after its first flight and she has been ticking all the boxes and more,” announced Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann earlier today. “On some of our test sessions, we had 25 knots gusting 35 with wind waves to match and she was cruising over the waves.

According to the company, which released the video below, the testing occurred in sea states featuring chop and waves averaging around 75 cm (2’6″) and peaking at 100 cm (3’3″).

The VS-9 is designed to transport up to nine passengers, though Vessev claims to be developing a much larger 100-passenger hydrofoil ferry for larger operators.

San Francisco, California-based electric boat startup Navier also plans to target the commercial ferry market with its first model.

Debuted in 2023 , the Navier N30 announced its first official pilot program earlier this year. The hydrofoiling electric boat was said to be partnering with payment platform Stripe to ferry its employees from San Francisco’s outskirts to the downtown area.

The plan would showcase how the normally one-hour drive could be transformed into a much more efficient half-hour ferry ride on a hydrofoil electric ferry.

Electrek’s Take

I’ve test-driven a few hydrofoil electric boats, and I’ve always been amazed by how easy they are to operate and how smooth the ride is.

On Candela’s electric boats, I’ve been able to cut right across the wakes left by cruise ships while feeling barely a ripple.

Ferries can replace a significant number of cars in waterside cities, but making the experience more pleasant and efficient is key to getting more drivers out of their cars. With hydrofoil electric boats, not only do the journeys use significantly less energy, but they’re also smoother and more enjoyable. I’ll admit to being prone to seasickness, yet I’ve never gotten even a tad bit queasy on a hydrofoil electric boat.

Check out one of my last hydrofoil electric boat test drives below, where I took the Candela C-8 for a spin around Stockholm.

Nickel: East Troy sailor Stephanie Roble heading back to Olympics, this time with a great deal of experience

american made sailing catamarans

Stephanie Roble has to be fit and flexible to sail. She’s bear crawling under booms, she’s ripping on stubborn lines, she’s hiking her entire 5-foot-3 frame out the rail, using every muscle in her core to keep her 49erFX Dinghy from tipping over and dying in the waves like a fallen paper kite.

But Roble, the star skipper from the pristine waters of Lake Beulah in East Troy, is not a kid anymore. She’s 35, and her peers have for the most part left competitive racing and are working normal 9 to 5s. Her competition now is mostly a fleet of 23- and 24-year-olds who don’t need Biofreeze and recovery massages just yet. That means Roble and her sailing mate, Maggie Shea – also soon to be 35 years old – have to work especially hard in the gym to keep up.

But they are sharp, focused and in peak form. And that’s a big reason why Roble and Shea are headed back to the Olympic Games.

“We are some of the older girls in the fleet, but on the windy days, which are the most physically challenging, we seem to perform pretty well,” Roble said in a phone interview from her home in Miami. “We like to say we're not doing too bad for a bunch of old dogs.”

Olympic Sailing Schedule | Paris 2024

Ranked No. 2 in the world , the pair has its eyes on the podium in Marseille, the sailing satellite location for the Paris Summer Games. To get here, it took resilience, determination, talent – and fundraising – like it does for all of these special athletes. But in Roble’s case specifically, it also took experience and the mental strength borne out of it.

Roble is rich in experience

A longtime competitor from the inland lakes of Wisconsin, Roble competed collegiately at Old Dominion, where she led her team to several women's and coed national championships as a two-time All-American. Roble trained for the 2012 Olympic Games but didn’t qualify. She then raced professionally.

Roble and Shea, from Wilmette, Illinois, have been sailing together in this dinghy class, the 49erFX, for almost a decade. But they met during their high school years in junior sailing regattas. They parted ways for a bit, as Roble focused on professional keelboat sailing, in which she was the 2014 U.S. Rolex yachtswoman of the year and Shea pursued the 2016 Olympics. They reunited in late 2016 to train for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

More: Nickel: From East Troy to the Olympics, this Wisconsin sailor has reached a goal. Now she waits.

They qualified for the first time in their careers – winning the U.S. Olympic Trials in February 2020 – but the pandemic delayed the Olympics for a whole year and made the training more challenging. Still, Roble and Shea prepared for Tokyo.

They did not qualify for the finals by finishing out of the top 10 in 11th after a controversial call in the Tokyo Olympics in the summer of 2021 . According to US Sailing , Roble and Shea had a strong start in a key race but received a career-first yellow flag penalty from the umpires. They were flagged for improperly moving their bodies to propel the boat in the very light conditions. They were three points shy of advancing to the medal race, and at the end of their regatta.

"This result doesn’t represent all that we’ve learned and accomplished," Shea told US Sailing.

Winning in 2023-24

While Roble and Shea had a shorter, three-year ramp-up period for this year's Olympics, they used that experience to propel their seasons going forward. First, they qualified Team USA at the world championship in 2023 by finishing in the top 10. Then they qualified themselves at the Olympic trials this spring through the two-event race setup with the world championship in the Canary Islands and Spain. After earning a big lead in the points standings, Roble and Shea were able to sail smart to guarantee their qualification.

Roble and Shea will be one of the 21 spots in their boat class at the Olympic Games. They will be the only American boat in this race class.

Roble credits something called SWOT – an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – a sports psychology training program. She evaluated everything, from her approach to racing and race days and what level of intensity best suited her, to how she wanted to handle her success as well as any mistakes.

“Mindset is a really a critical thing when it comes to racing,” Roble said. “At the Olympics, everyone has very similar skills on the water; it's about how you execute those skills that will ultimately set you apart and hopefully win a medal with those skills.

“How do you recover from a bad decision or a mistake on the water? How do you put yourself in the right mindset to go racing? You might be feeling really nervous or anxious – how do you calm yourself down from that to get into your ideal arousal state for racing? Sometimes you're totally tired and burned out. So how do you get into that ideal mindset?

“You need to figure out how to get there with different techniques.”

Roble and Shea enjoyed a great deal of success in the last year while they sharpened their mental edge. Last summer, at the Olympic test event, they took fourth in the small fleet at the Olympic venue in Marseille. Roble and Shea then took fifth at the World Cup in Spain and seventh at the 2023 world championship. They sailed to a bronze at the Pan Am Games last year.

Familiar with racing venue

Their vast experience also means they know the racing venue at Marseille well. They sailed there in the summer of 2022 and spent two months practicing and racing there in the summer of 2023. They were there this spring for five weeks as well. That allowed them to study and chart the varying weather patterns.

“The U.S. sailing team has a meteorologist who is doing a bunch of research on historical data from weather stations in Marseille ,” Roble said. “We take notes on what the wind direction is, what the weather patterns were during that time. And we take notes on which race course we sailed on that day and what the compass numbers were for that day, what the trend of the wind was, what the current was doing that day. So we basically we are able to develop a little bit of a playbook.”

It's a major accomplishment for that young athlete from Lake Beulah. When their daughter was born, Nancy and Dale Roble brought her home from the hospital, and Dale sailed his MC Scow around Lake Beulah with "It’s a Girl!" written on the sail. Roble’s first lessons were at age 5 at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club’s sailing school in the Opti Sailboats. Growing up on the lake, she was always in a boat or a kayak because the water was essentially her front yard.

Sailing is a way of life on Beulah. All summer, white sails fill the lake with children, teenagers and adults practicing, or sailing in regattas. While they look picturesque against the blue sky and puffs of clouds, they can get very competitive.

“There’s a history of good sailors to come out of Wisconsin and the Midwest,” said Roble’s college coach, Mitch Brindley. “Even with the short season, they’re highly motivated.”

Roble has now sailed around the world, and she’s ready to use all of her knowledge and experience for these 2024 Summer Games.

“Our aim as a team is to be very calculated in our approach and objective at how we look at things on the race course,” said Roble. “Not emotional about if something goes really good or something goes really bad. Just trying to keep things pretty steady Eddie.”

It’s no accident that modern America’s Cup boats and Formula 1 race cars are similar. In fact, in addition to America’s Cup, several professional boat racing leagues like the SailGP (which will be racing in New York City this weekend), and the new E1 Series (which features electric-powered, hydrofoiling racing boat teams owned by an eclectic list of celebrity owners) aspire to deliver Formula 1-like racing on the water.

And those similarities go deeper than just marketing hype. In fact, the Ineos Britannia team has partnered with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s Applied Science division to bring together some of the best talent from the F1 and sailing for the America’s Cup. The partnership created a team of more than 100 designers and engineers who helped develop the race boat at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 base in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

And since Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff just happened to be in Spain for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, their recent visit to the Ineos Britannia base in Barcelona as preparations continue ahead of the 37th America’s Cup makes perfect sense—and a great photo op!

Hamilton, Russell and Wolff were welcomed by Ineos Britannia Team Principal and Skipper Sir Ben Ainslie, along with Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who took them on a tour of the facilities before George and Toto joined Sir Ben on the water.

“It was a privilege for all of us at Ineos Britannia to show Toto, Lewis, and George around our base here in Barcelona,” said Sir Ben. “They have been supporters of the project throughout, and it was therefore very fitting for us to give them a closer look at our race boat for the first time. It was great to get the guys out on the water today too; they know their way around a car but made sailing our AC75 look a touch too easy for my liking. We’re always looking for new and emerging talent to take the helm, but I didn’t realize we’d find it in the F1 paddock! It was a brilliant day and I look forward to supporting them all this weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix.”

Toto commented: “Today has been an amazing experience. We’ve got our headquarters at Brackley where a lot of the Ineos Britannia design work takes place, but it has been brilliant to see the base here in Barcelona. This is where the action will take place later this year and the facilities the team has are excellent.

“I also thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a ‘cyclor’ (cycling sailor) on the team’s AC75 race boat too. It is a real physical test and it’s easy to forget just how athletic the team must be. We are all out-and-out racers. Whilst our core objective as a business is winning on land in F1, this is an exciting project with Sir Ben and Sir Jim, and we are delighted to be a part of it.”

Lewis said: “It has been so exciting seeing the work of Ineos Britannia at the factory in Brackley over the past few years. To come here to Barcelona and see it all coming together, including the race boat for the first time, was so impressive. The technology involved is incredible and my mind is absolutely blown! I’m really excited to see how the team gets on later this year and I want to wish them the very best of luck in their pursuit of the America’s Cup.”

George added: “What an incredible experience! To get the opportunity to sail with Sir Ben and get a true sense of the speed and maneuverability of the Ineos Britannia AC75 Race Boat was amazing. It felt like we were floating through the air; it definitely got the blood pumping!”

And Mercedes-AMG Petronas is not the only F1 team with direct connections to the America’s Cup. Alinghi Red Bull Racing has been working closely with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high-performance vehicle engineering division of Red Bull Racing. Despite the apparent difference between the two sports, both Formula 1 and the America's Cup share roots in high-performance engineering.

Following Max Verstappen's visit to the Alinghi Red Bull base last year, two motorsports icons, Visa Cash App RB F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and 8-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez took it a step further. They not only got a chance to foil on the Swiss challenger's two AC40 yachts, they also raced on the America's Cup venue. Swapping wheels for sails, Ricciardo and Márquez went head-to-head along Barcelona's seafront for a friendly contest, feeling the adrenaline as they reached speeds of almost 50 mph.

"The way these boats are built and the structure feels a lot like the cockpit of a Formula One car," Ricciardo commented. "They're super sensitive with the wind, so aerodynamics has some crossover as well. It's a lot like what we do, with small movements and everything needs a lot of finesse."

The Swiss team's skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis was tasked with getting the two athletes up to speed before the AC40s went out. "Daniel took my seat on the boat, and followed all my directions as I sent them through from the chase boat," Psarofaghis said. "Both Marc and Daniel were dropped in the deep end today, and they adapted really quickly. Overall, it was a super inspiring day out on the water with these guys."

Although it was a lower-stakes race for Ricciardo ahead of the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday, the friendly competition with his Red Bull colleague might just be the perfect preparation as he gears up for the racetrack.
