Two years ago, Wally founder Luca Bassani and the Wally team, now part of the Ferretti Group conglomerate, introduced a new style called the wallywhy200 . It had some of the brand’s hallmarks like the open bow, but it seemed to wander off the reservation with its full wide-body design. The 89-footer (the 200 refers to 200 GT of interior volume) had the same space as a 125-footer, according to Wally. This quest for space led to the removal of side decks and a full-beam interior. At the bow, a forward owner’s cabin had an unprecedented 270-degree panoramic view of the horizon.

I had a chance to sea-trial Wally’s latest model, the wallywhy150, last summer, before its official launch earlier this week at the Yachting Festival du Cannes. I came away impressed.

The Wally team wanted more than just a 79-foot sistership that with ten less feet in length than the 200. It wanted to pioneer new ideas.

Bassani says the model name “why,” which stands for “Wally Hybrid Yacht,” has nothing to do with the propulsion of the boat. “It combines elements of a motoryacht and a faster semi-planing vessel,” he told me. “It offers the best of both worlds: the stability and the strength of an explorer, while keeping the comfort and elegance of a luxury yacht.”  The 150’s hull architecture is consistent with the larger 200, but the appendages have been reduced to better align the 79-footer’s proportions.

Like the 200, the exterior of the wallywhy150 may initially raise eyebrows. It leaves normal way behind, with a continuous hull flow from stern to bow, no side decks and no portholes, as part of the Wally family feeling. But stepping aboard unravels the function behind these stylistic choices.

The wallywhy150 shares elements such as the bow stateroom for the owners, while the full-beam design maximizes interior space. Where it breaks new ground is at the rear part of the boat. The main salon is integrated with the aft cockpit, separated by a retractable glass door that creates a seamless interface between indoors and out.

The salon is also designed on two levels (including an impressive 9.2-foot-high aft section), with the use of large structural windows and a teak ceiling that is curved to resemble a wave. It delivers an unobstructed view of the sea from any angle. Just a few steps from the engines, the area remains remarkably quiet with the doors closed.

The flybridge is also a different design than the wallywhy220. The 150’s more open feel evokes a Mediterranean-style ambiance. The aft portion features a lounge adorned with freestanding sofas, a wet bar accompanied by a dining table, and, moving toward the bow, the helm station.

The helm’s distinctive square shapes, extensive use of carbon fiber across the dashboard and futuristic design are definitive reminders of being aboard a Wally.

These dual systems actually reflect the thought behind this new motoryacht. It’s slow and fuel-efficient, but can go fast when you need speed. The exterior is a bit ungainly, granted, but the interior is more svelte and contemporary than any yacht in its class. The main suite with a 270-degree sea view, the open stern, and the performance all reflect Wally’s design ethos. In short, it’s a shapeshifter, offering multiple boating lifestyles across the same hull.

Wally’s wallypower58 Reviewed

I don’t normally pay much attention to taglines, but Wally’s current one—“20 years ahead”—is an exception. Remember the WallyPower 118? It was Wally founder Luca Bassani’s personal vision of what superyachting could be. It launched 20 years ago but still looks like it’s only just dropped in from outer space. Then there are the various smaller wallypowers that have launched since, the new wallywhys that are phasing in now, and the various iterations of wallytenders, the first of which caused a stir more than 25 years ago. All carry the same futuristic design cues. And who would argue that the new wallypower58 doesn’t look like it’s 20 years ahead of the game too?

The wallypower58 has a distinct aesthetic with a square stem; a clean, hard-chined hull; and a sharp, mostly glass superstructure. The high foredeck has deck lighting and flush sun-pad inlays, and a cockpit Wally calls a semi-open salon. That last space has hardtop protection above as well as full side glazing to plug the gaps between the roof and deck. Overall, the hull volume allocates guest spaces roughly 50-50 inside and outside.

Tanks, engines and pods are beneath the cockpit sole, and there’s carbon-fiber detailing and teak decking everywhere. The decking is particularly impressive where it wraps over the after lip of the swim platform and where it lines the bulwarks. Their after sections fold down to add around 54 square feet of deck space. The whole open-deck area then provides something like 325 square feet of space.

The star attraction aft is a 77-square-foot island sun bed with an awning stretched over a carbon-fiber frame that stows neatly around the base unit. Amidships beneath the coachroof, there’s around 6-foot-9-inch headroom and sofas down each side. The starboard one has a dining table that can be supplemented by free-standing chairs. The forward area beneath the one-piece curved and heavily back-raked windshield includes two high-backed carbon pilot seats to starboard that address a small-diameter horizontal wheel. They look like they could have been plucked from the starship Enterprise.

As with most open models, the accommodations closure is a sliding hatch inboard of the helm, which is nicely arranged with all the switches and instrumentation set into carbon-look moldings. Two Garmin displays dominate the console, where visibility is superb. An electric sunroof above the windshield provides natural ventilation when the air-conditioning is off.

The standard belowdecks arrangement includes a lower salon with two long sofas—one on either side, a head to starboard and a stall shower to port. Forward, there is a stateroom with an aft-facing double berth. The lockers and closets have a rather 1950s luggage look about them, a great contrast to the ultramodern vibe everywhere else.

A smaller, double-berth stateroom with a door, or a single crew cabin with hatch access from the cockpit, are the options on the port side of the lower salon, which also includes a surprise: Instead of hullside windows, this model has what Wally calls magic portholes. Two 55-inch flat-screen TVs can relay real-time images from cameras in the vessel’s sides, or the TVs can relay recordings of the owner’s favorite bay when he’s tied up at the dock, or the TVs can play movies or games. This setup keeps the 58’s sleek hull lines pristine and is more efficient to build, as real windows require significant structures around the apertures as well as laminated glass.

There are two choices when it comes to propulsion: triple Volvo Penta D8-550/IPS700s or triple D8-600/IPS800s, which deliver reported maximum speeds of 35 to 36 knots and 37 to 38 knots, respectively. The boat I got aboard had the most-powerful, 470-cubic-inch, six-cylinder inline diesels, which, at a bit more than half load and in auto-trim mode with the Seakeeper 9 off, delivered virtually 38 knots at just over 2,900 rpm. Wallys always run every bit as well as they look, slicing efficiently and heeling into the turns just enough.

At an all-day, everyday 30 knots at 2,500 rpm, the ultimate range is around 350 nautical miles, much the same as it would be at 20 knots and 2,000 rpm, so there’s no real incentive to cruise halfheartedly with this machine. The onboard management system synchronizes the propulsion of all three pods while in ahead mode, so with only the usual twin control levers at the helm, the skipper drives the boat just like he would if the boat had a twin-engine installation. When maneuvering astern, those two levers only engage the outer engines.

At the heart of a Wally build is style, performance, luxury and a bit of avant-garde thinking. It’s a formula that has made the brand a fan favorite, creating a niche that only it can own. And the wallypower58 owns it well.

The X Factor

The first Wally 58X version recently arrived in Florida. This iteration has quad 600 hp V-12 Mercury Verado outboards, which means a top-end speed of around 50 knots and a quoted fast-cruise range of 290 nautical miles. Normally, aboard an open yacht of this size with a quad rack, owners have to sacrifice some accessibility to the water aft, but fold-down quarter platforms are game-changers in that regard.

Wally’s parent company, the Ferretti Group, used the launch of the wallypower58 to say it will soon be one of the first yachtbuilders to offer Watchit anti-collision and grounding systems across its portfolio. Developed by Israeli company Aqua Marine Tech, these systems warn captains about navigational dangers. The tech’s artificial-intelligence technology interprets data from GPS, chart plotters, AIS, radar, sonar, proximity sensors and more.

I love the Wally wallpapers, but they seriously need to think about some new resolutions. I mean, 640x480?!? Does anyone still use that? My PDA has 640x480 resolution. My home screen is 1280x1024... and I just ordered a brand new 22" wide.... the default res is 1680x1050 on that, but wally has nothing close I'm sure.

I have managed to extract some high-res pics from the wally site, and still have them saved on another computer which, sadly I can't get to right now. In the Press Collection you can download articles from magazine reviews. Some of these have high res pics. If you have to much spare time you can grab the pics from the pdf, which are often in two parts because of a two page spread, rejoin them and end up with some unique high res pics. It was a rainy day. Anyone else think the redesigned 70 looks much better?

Wallysail Bulwarks 2006 Over the years, Wally has developed some nice and interesting R&D and some that is just indigenous to the sailing world of yachts. Remember those flush fitting skylights and windows on the deck from 1991 and what about those anchoring systems that no one ever seems to know about from 1994? Well it has been 2 years since their latest 'innovation' in 2004 which was the revolutionary skylight that appeared on the Wallypower 118 and then on many of these sailing vessels particularly like on the s/y Tango. You were probably accustomed to seeing the metal stainless steel rods and the tensioned wires running through them. Big Wally clash among its 80' performace yachts. This clash was held for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Here is the extract: Porto Cervo, Italy – It was a superb racing week in the Sardinian waters with blue sky, warm sunshine and different weather conditions ranging from very light and unstable breeze to steady wind over 20 knots. As usual, the regatta provided beautiful coastal courses among the islands combined with the glamorous parties hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Rolex. The Wally Class had eight yachts on the starting line, gathering in Costa Smeralda after their Mediterranean summer cruises: Dark Shadow, Magic Carpet Squared, the new Y3K Aori, Dangerous but fun, Highland Fling X, Indio and J One. The big fight was among the five 80 footers that had a tight competition, racing close to each other most of the time, so that the regatta final result was assigned only on the last day in a very narrow point range. J One had an impressive consistency and won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007 in the Wally Division, with Indio placing second and Dark Shadow third. Wally reveals its new 43m Wallyace superyacht design

Monaco-based yacht builder Wally reveals the design for its latest superyacht, a 43-metre Wallyace that would be its largest motor yacht yet.

Previously, the largest Wallyace delivered by the yard has been the 26-metre Wallyace – the first Wallyace Kanga was launched in June 2012. And its largest motor yacht overall has been the 36-metre Wally 118. The largest Wally yacht to date is one of its sailing yachts, the 50.5-metre superyacht Better Place .

The 43m Wallyace will be the biggest Wally motor yacht, and according to the yard, she is being developed for a client who requires the same characteristics as the 26-metre but in the 40-metre size range. Design is by Wally and Luca Bassani, and the five-deck superyacht would be built in steel and aluminium. With a wide 9.5-metre beam and high freeboards, the new design amplifies interior volumes and makes good use of the space provided while keeping her gross tonnage under 500 at 450GT.

The upper deck would be entirely dedicated to the yacht's owner, with 140sqm of living space comprising a suite with the bed facing aft for optimal views, office, two walk-in closets, his-and-hers with bath tub, and private deck areas forward and aft. The lower deck is dedicated to guests, with two VIP suites, two double staterooms and one nanny cabin, all with en suite bathrooms. The galley is also at this level, separating the guest area from the 38sqm tender garage amidships, which stows a seven metre tender, jet skis and toys. A sizeable 73sqm spa with a hammam, sauna, massage room, day head and Jacuzzi then opens onto the beach club aft. Crew accommodation for 10 are found on the tank deck level.

With a glass superstructure and full-height windows that open completely, the main deck is designed around open-air living concept. When the windows are open, as pictured above, the main deck living space totals 150 square metres. The aft table can accommodate 12 for al fresco dining, and forward on the main deck is a cinema space, day head and a spacious main saloon.

Wally has a Frers-designed 33.5m Wally 110 sailing superyacht in build , with delivery scheduled for summer 2016. The fourth Wallyace motor yacht is in build in Italy, and the third Wallycento sailing yacht is in build at Green Marine in the UK, with both scheduled to launch in 2015.

Visionary yachtsman Luca Bassani builds a family yacht that combines cruising comfort with the performance of the maxi. As an innovator he develops a number of novel features designed to make sailing easier, safer and more fun.
