BROKER'S COMMENTS

Johan Anker was an artist in yacht design greatly concerned with the beauty of lines - BOJAR is a boat of such breathtaking and effortless beauty; she genuinely lifts the human spirit and perhaps defining the term ‘classic yacht’. A ballast ratio at approximately 50 / 50 she is an extremely effective sailing boat. Rarely off the podium at any classic regatta – at the RYS Bicentenary Regatta BOJAR proved an equal match for icons DORADE and STORMY WEATHER. In these days of restorations, it is rare to find a boat both so original and in such fine condition. With only a few owners throughout her life – the last but one for 28 years, the short Norwegian sailing seasons with winters in a boat shed will also have helped. BOJAR can be raced with family and friends or easily cruised by just two people - unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage. Highly recommended.

Historical notes

ANKER & JENSEN YARD No. 417 BOJAR was launched in 1937 as ILMEN V and was one of the last designs from the board of Johan Anker. She rates as a 10 metre class yacht, originally launched in 1937 as ILMEN V which was one of the last 90 square metre designs from the board of Johan Anker being built with similar dimensions to a F class 10 metre designed to cruise and race with the metre classes. Anker’s reputation is in part due to his incredible success in International Rule designs, his creation of the iconic Dragon One Design - and of all the famous designers of his era, he was arguably the best helmsman. Anker often watched the offerings of Messrs Fife and Mylne cross the finish line behind him - This “feel” for a boat helped him create some of the fastest and most beautiful designs of any period. BOJAR’s dimensions are similar to the 10 Metre class, but with the slightly greater beam, that her first owner Ludvig Swinndal had requested, in his quest for the perfect cruiser racer. In due course she passed to Ragnvald Jacobsen, re naming her BOJAR, and keeping her from 1941 to 1967. Jacobsen was also a talented helmsman, winning many regattas in the 5.5 and 6 Metre classes.

Construction and finish

BOJAR was built by Anker & Jensen of Oslo, one of the most prestigious yards in Scandinavia using materials and applying craftsmanship of the very highest quality. - Oregon pine 30 mm planking on composite hot dip galvanized steel and wooden frames - Oak keel, stem and stern post - Elm steam bent ribs - Teak deck - Traditional bronze fittings - Faired smooth topsides painted with Awlgrip

Racing notes

BOJAR had a long sailing career in Norway before joining the Solent based fleet of classic yachts in 2012. In Cowes she has participated in the annual Panerai Cowes and Classic Week regattas showing impressive form, which led to an invitation to the RYS Bicentenary in 2015. This event saw BOJAR racing against STORMY WEATHER, DORADE, ARGYLL AND TOMAHAWK as well as 20 of the local English based classics including CETAWAYO, INFANTA, OPPOSITION AND WHOOPER. Fleet and class racing at these regattas saw BOJAR achieve some impressive results against more modern designs both inshore and in the offshore conditions experienced in the Round the Island classic regatta races. This racing programme has provided a spectacular series of photographs that evidence the success of the newly designed sail plans and IRC 0.973 rating optimisation without compromising the originality or integrity of the 1937 build. SOLENT RACE RESULTS Summary stats 2012 - 2018 2018 - 1st place in 8/14 ( 57%) races, 1st or 2nd places in 11/14 (84%) races 2012 to 2018 - 1st place in 13/48 (27%) races and in top 3 places in 25/48 (52%) races Round the Island Classic Yacht races - First in class in RYS Bicentennary Regatta and three third places in the three Panerai RTI events held between 2012 and 2016.

Johan Anker 1937 Cutter “Bojar”

BOJAR was launched in 1937 as ILMEN V and she was one of the last designs from the board of Johan Anker.

Anker’s reputation is part due to his incredible success in International Rule designs, his creation of the iconic Dragon One Design – and of all the famous designers of his era, he was arguably the best helmsman. Anker often watched the offerings of Messrs Fife and Mylne cross the finish line behind him – This “feel” for a boat helped him create some of the fastest and most beautiful designs of any period.

BOJAR’s dimensions are similar to the 10 Metre class, but with the slightly greater beam, that her first owner had requested, in his quest for the perfect cruiser racer. The current owner has owned her for 28 years, enjoying cruising and classic racing in home waters. BOJAR can be easily sailed by only two people, which is unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage.

DESCRIPTIONS

Accommodations & Layout

"BoJan" offers her captain and crew both an elegant and supremely functional layout.  She was designed to accommodate a family of six is style and comfort, but has berth space for up to twelve when including several convertible berth spaces and her sleeper sofa in the main salon.

Starting on the bow , she has a large foredeck area which has several seats with storage below, as well as her original Ideal electric anchor windlass, two deck mounted Danforth style anchors with traditional anchor hoist off the starboard bow, and her primary anchor secured at-the-ready in the stem.  Moving aft along the wide side decks, you are met with grab rails within easy reach atop the cabin, and a high side rail to keep you safely aboard in the seaway.  Stepping through the varnished door into the aft deck and helm area, you are met with a bright yet protected space.  The helm itself offers a large space for easy navigation with great sight lines and a huge seat.  Like many of the dual-purpose spaces aboard, the helm seat also allows the seat back to be moved forward to allow for the seat to be rear-facing, and it has drawer storage below.  To port is a mini-bar area with sink, counter, and an ice maker.  Opening windows & side panels allow for ample ventilation for this space.  Moving further aft there is a low table with a seating area surrounding it, and a fixed seat near the stern.  Access to the steering gear can be found behind this seat along with an additional cooler.  Her tender rests comfortably on davits over the stern.

Beginning below in the forepeak , you will find the separate stall shower for the forward stateroom.  This features a watertight hatch for access to the anchor chain and rode.  Stepping aft from the shower brings you into the forward stateroom.  It features two bunk berths to port with locker space at the foot of the upper berth as well as opposite to starboard.  Aft of the hanging locker is the head which features a toilet and sink.  Access is either via a door into the stateroom or by a separate door from the galley.  Stepping aft from the forward stateroom brings you in to the large U-shaped galley to port.  Set up in a commercial fashion, it offers lots of counter space for meal preparation, copious amounts of storage space for galleyware and food stores, a full size refrigerator and freezer, 4 burner electric stove and oven, and a microwave.  Opposite on the starboard side is a unique convertible space - it can be set up as a straight settee with a fold-down table, or it can be converted into another area with two bunk berths when additional sleeping accommodations are necessary.  Below the folding table is the Splendide vented washer/dryer.  Main engine room access is through the door under the steps which lead up to the main salon, and there is a secondary access through the starboard side of the salon sole for easy access outboard of the starboard engine.

Stepping up from the galley   brings you to the main salon.  A comfortable sleeper sofa is found to port, two chairs to starboard, and a custom Hi/Low (Castro Convertible) table sits between them.  There are also six folding chairs for use with the table in the high position for seating around the dinner table.  When not in use they conveniently fold and stow behind the sofa out of sight.  There is a large TV with Bose stereo on the starboard side forward, and ample storage surrounding the seating area.  Her interior is truly built for functionality which is part of why her owners have loved this vessel as much as they do.

Continuing further aft down a second set of stairs brings you to the hallway which has plenty of cabinet storage to starboard.  Opposite to port is the convertible midships stateroom which has a total of four separate berths.  If your crew prefers more privacy, there is a curtain which can be deployed to separate the cabin into two separate areas with separate entry doors.  In addition to the cabinet storage across the hall, there are plenty of drawers with storage in the stateroom.  On the aft end of the hallway is the second head which has a sink and toilet, and it shares a separate stall shower (Jack & Jill style) with the mirror image head further aft.

Her master stateroom is found at the very end of the hallway, and as you enter you will notice that it is a full beam master, offering a very spacious layout with lots of natural light through her large ports.  Hanging lockers and ample drawer storage may be found throughout and below the berth.  Her queen berth ensures a good night's rest after a fantastic day on the water.  Custom headboard affords access to an emergency exit aft.

Forward Stateroom

  • Bunk berth setup on port side with folding steps to top bunk.
  • Shower forward with access to anchor rode locker.
  • Hanging locker to starboard opposite berth, and deep storage area forward of top bunk.
  • Head with sink and toilet aft aft of the hanging locker with access from forward stateroom and from the galley.
  • Opening hatch overhead.

Convertible Midships Stateroom

This stateroom aft of the main salon is on the port side and has four single berths.  There is a privacy curtain between if desired with separate door entry for each side, or the curtain can be left open to make this a large open stateroom.  Drawer storage can be found below next to the berths.  Opposite across the hall is a large storage cabinet and also the two aft heads.

Master Stateroom

Master stateroom aft has a custom queen berth with lots of built-in storage below.  Emergency exit is through the convertible headboard to the aft locker.  This stateroom was redone by the Bob Mathews/Mathews Brothers in Denton, MD who are known for their precise woodwork and marine carpentry.  The berth is flanked by two hanging lockers on either side for additional storage.

There are a total of three heads aboard.  Each has a Vacuflush toilet system.  Aft heads have a Jack & Jill style shower shared between them.  Forward head has the separate shower in the forepeak.  The holding tank was recently replaced and has a 66 gallon capacity.

  • The galley setup aboard mirrors small commercial style kitchens.  Stainless steel countertops, lots of storage throughout for dishware, galleyware, and food storage make this a great spot to prepare a fine meal for all to enjoy.
  • Refrigerator, stove, stove hood, and washer/dryer opposite are all very recent.
  • Opposite the U-shaped galley on the port side is the washer/dryer, folding table, and bench seat which can convert to a bunk berth with privacy curtain if desired.
  • Large stainless steel sink
  • Liebherr Refrigerator/Freezer
  • GE Spacemaker II Microwave
  • Hotpoint 4-burner electric stove and oven
  • Twin Volvo TAMD 122 diesels were installed new in 1993, and they are the third re-power for this vessel.
  • She will cruise up to 15 knots continuously, but consumes 16 GPH when cruising in the 11-12 knot range.
  • Dual Racor filter setup on each engine to allow filter changes while underway.
  • All new exhaust system was installed in 2000.
  • Spare set of wheels (props) included.
  • Engines have been cared for by her owners, her captain, and by mechanic John Kerry.
  • Recent items of note: she recently had one new injector pump installed, and also had new injectors installed.
  • Emergency engine shutoffs above aft steps

On the Water -- Bogart had Bacall, but he also loved his boat

The famous yawl, Santana, started out as a staysail schooner.

Designed by Olin Stephens, Jr., it was built by Wilmington Boat Works

in 1935, for William L. Stewart, Jr., a member of Los Angeles Yacht Club.

Santana is 55 feet, 2 inches in length overall with a beam of 7 feet, 11

inches and a draft of 7 feet, 11 inches. She was powered with a Gray 6-71

gasoline engine.

Stewart, president of Union Oil Co., actively campaigned his schooner

yacht in offshore races out of Los Angeles Harbor. However, about 1937,

he had Santana re-rigged as a yawl in order to be more competitive. In

1939, he had a new yawl built, the Chubasco, with expectations of winning

the 1939 Honolulu race.

During World War II, the Santana was acquired by Dick Powell, the

movie actor, who moored her off his Bayshore home. At this time, all

sailing was confined to Newport Harbor. Humphrey Bogart was sailing his

Albatross Class sloop, Slug Nutty No. 19, in the harbor and sailed with

Santana many times. Bogie fell in love with this beautiful yawl. In the

fall of 1944, he persuaded Powell to sell Santana to him for $50,000.

Thus began Bogie’s love affair with Santana, which lasted until his

death in 1957.

Bogart, a member of Newport Harbor Yacht Club, kept Santana on a

mooring off the clubhouse until 1950. Due to more wind at Los Angeles

Harbor and more competition in the ocean racing fleet, Bogie joined Los

Angeles Yacht Club and moved Santana to Los Angeles Harbor.

Bogie actively campaigned Santana in local and offshore races. He won

the Around San Clemente Island Race three years in a row and retired the

large perpetual trophy, which stayed on his mantle. After his death, wife

Lauren Bacall graciously returned the trophy to Voyagers Yacht Club, the

sponsors of the race, for competition again.

The Cup is now raced each year in offshore races known as the Bogart

series. Santana participated in the first Ensenada Race in 1948, with

Bacall on board and placed first in class. Santana was entered in the

1947 Honolulu Race. Bob Brokaw, of Newport Harbor Yacht Club, the sailing

master on Santana, was given a large sum of money ($15,000) by Bogart to

make Santana “race ready.” However, at the very last minute, Bogie

unhappily had to withdraw from the race because of a revised shooting

schedule at the movie studio.

Bogie was a good sailor; his love of sailing began at the age of 14

when he learned how to sail on his father’s sloop on Lake Canadaigua, one

of the finger lakes in upstate New York. Bogart fully understood the need

to keep a sailboat in top condition at all times. Thus, he employed a

full-time professional skipper in Carl Peterson to look after Santana’s

In 1956, Bogie was diagnosed with incurable cancer. In September, five

months before his death, Bogie, in declining health, took one last sail

on Santana. He assembled his salty, all-male racing crew, including his

young son, Stephen.

They sailed out of Los Angeles Harbor to Whites Landing at Catalina,

where they spent the night and then continued on to Newport Harbor. Bogie

spent an afternoon and night aboard Santana, which was moored to a buoy

off Newport Harbor Yacht Club. He did not go ashore but spent the time

curled up in the cockpit reflecting on the many happy times that he had

enjoyed sailing in Newport Harbor. This was the last time the beautiful

yawl Santana was in Newport Harbor under Humphrey Bogart’s ownership.

At this date, Santana is in the San Francisco Bay area.

After a sinking in its slip due to a defective bilge pump, she has

been completely refitted by her current owner and returned to its

original schooner rig.

There seems to be a lot of life in Santana yet. * JOHN BLAICH is a

local sailor who chronicles the history of the yachts and boats that have

Champagne Conditions in Suffolk!

Post america's cup: although it has been a fantastic journey and congratulations emirates team new zealand, it's now time to drop back down (off the foils) to the reality of the common definition of boats. cytv presents and invites you to watch the recent suffolk yacht harbour classic regatta – the quality of racing, the attendants of so many beautiful classics and owners, absorb the relaxed atmosphere, it might even spur you on to pen this in for next year..

Press the play button above to watch this year's SYH Classic Regatta video.

Jonathan Dyke, Managing Director of Suffolk Yacht Harbour presents the 16th edition of the SYH Classic Regatta. He does this year after year with such warmth and diligence, making the event one of the most unique in the British classic yacht racing calendar. The race officer is both on the button, setting great courses and while showing a great sense of humour. The staff in the Lightship, which is the bar and restaurant that overlooks their marina and that hosts the social events, are hard-working and deliver a never-ending stream of food for the events' hungry sailors.

Jonathan is not only the thread that holds it together to ensure a wonderfully run event but also the link to the array of helpful boat builders at Suffolk Yacht Harbour . Specialising in classic restoration, SYH's boat building team have, as always, contributed in significant ways to helping owners overcome some difficult snags ahead of the event. In the film CYTV talked to Andy Easdown, who owns Sparkman & Stephens 41ft sloop ILLIRIA, a regular entrant to the Panerai British Classic Yacht Club Regatta in Cowes: "...we had a really difficult year this year to get to the start line.... Every year we seem to have something that causes a problem before the start." He goes on to explain the shaft and engine needed attention a couple of years ago, which the yard at SYH sorted out. This year he explains, he found rot in the mast.

"So the mast had to come back out, a massive repair, Robert the shipwright made a beautiful job of it. We got it [the mast] back in on the Thursday, rigged the boat on the Friday, we were at the start line at 11 O'clock this morning. So we always seem to be cutting things fine but the yard are tremendous in the way they've helped us."

– andy easdown.

Being a one-stop shop is essential at SYH. At many classic regattas in Europe and beyond, you'd find yourself having to move your boat "around the corner" or even further afield to be fixed and racing at once. SYH have on-site two chandleries including a traditional chandlery – Classic Marine as well as shop, engineers, marine electricians, riggers and sail makers – One Sails – who were actually on hand in case anyone needed help and repairs at the regatta.
