What It Costs To Moor A Superyacht At The Monaco Grand Prix

Forget the F1 – booking a berth is the real race...

What It Costs To Moor A Superyacht At The Monaco Grand Prix

Image: Gareth Harford

Monaco. The billionaire’s playground. The kleptomaniac’s kryptonite. The ludomaniac’s lair. Superyacht city. Monaco is known as a fabulous place to spend money like wild (and to strut on a treadmill on the deck of your superyacht , whilst watching the F1).

Speaking of which, you might be interested to know how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco during the Monaco Grand Prix. To answer this burning question, DMARGE spoke to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci.

Balci told us just to book a fairly average berth in Monaco “for F1 week” was around 30 thousand euros “for a 35-meter motoryacht for a place which had no view of track but inside the port.”

Balci explained: “There are different parts in the marina which have different rates depending on where the yacht will be.”

yacht monaco price

“If it sees the track or not, price changes as well,” Bali told us.

“The berths which directly see the track were around 50-100K euro for the week, which is almost their yearly berth fee in a normal marina.” Candas Balci

Browsing through Reddit’s F1 Technical page, one user posts a link to a photo which purports to give a list of Monaco’s pricing for 2019. The prices which appear in the photo seem more or less consistent with the pricing Balci gave DMARGE.

yacht monaco price

Another Reddit user said: “My old landlord used to work on super yachts and also happened to introduce me to f1 so I can at least give you an anecdotal response. He said to rent the slip during the race week was around 100k and there was usually a 20k ‘offering to the port master’ as a separate transaction. He called it a bribe but I’m not sure it’s fair for me to use his characterization.”

RELATED: Hotel Staff Reveal The Wildest Rich Person Requests They’ve Ever Received

Forbes also wrote about this topic a number of years back. They reported: “To moor in one of the world’s most expensive marinas during high season, a superyacht owner can be expected to pay up to $4,130 per night, and during prime time events such as the Monaco Grand Prix rates can skyrocket to $100,000 or more for a five-day stay in Monaco’s prime berths.”

Monaco’s Port Hercules has 700 berths. Ac cording to 212 Yachts , “During the Monaco Grand Prix, the port is filled to capacity, with berths booked well in advance of the event.”

212 Yachts also says that to get yourelf a berth you need to complete a port application form. This is a highly competetive process.

“For the best chance of a successful application, it is essential to submit this form as early as possible,” 212 Yachts states.

“In order to do this, you must first select your charter yacht as technical details of the vessel must be specified on the form. Those directly associated with the Formula One, the Monaco Grand Prix and the event sponsors are fast tracked in the process, contributing to the extremely competitive nature of this process,” ( 212 Yachts ).

There you have it: you can add knowing how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco to your list of superyacht knowledge (which should also include knowing what it costs to spend a week on a superyacht in the medditeranean and why travelling around Europe on a superyacht is more stressful than you think ).

The best time to visit Monaco is during the summer months when the weather is at its very best and the waters are warm, ideal for maximizing the use of all your private yacht’s tenders and toys. However, spring and fall – the shoulder seasons – are also great times to visit, and a benefit is that there will be fewer crowds. The winter months are the least popular times for a Monaco superyacht charter, with most vessels in warmer climes, such as the Caribbean.

Winter (December to February):

  • Daytime temperatures are relatively mild, averaging around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Nights can be cooler, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius (41 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). If you want to enjoy a Monaco yacht charter, contact the charter experts at Moran Yacht & Ship.

How much does it cost to charter a luxury yacht in Monaco?

The cost of a luxury yacht charter in Monaco will primarily be determined by the size of the vessel, the itinerary, and the length of the charter. Expect to pay at least US$200,000 per week for a luxury boat rental in Monaco and over one million per week for the world’s finest superyachts. Moran Yacht & Ship excels at creating incredible experiences on the water aboard the world’s finest yachts. Our fleet of charter yachts features vessels built by pedigree shipbuilders, including Lürssen, Feadship, Amels, Nobiskrug, and Oceanco. Contact our team today.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance, or APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance, or APA, is designed to cover non-fixed costs, such as fuel, berthing costs, and food and drinks. Your luxury yacht broker will provide an estimated APA based on your needs. The APA is paid before the charter, and the captain will use the funds to cover your day-to-day costs. Any funds left at the end of the charter will be immediately refunded to you, along with a full breakdown of all expenses. During your yacht charter experience, you are free to ask the captain for details of the APA, including what has been used and what remains. The APA typically costs around 10% of the base charter rate.

What amenities can I expect on a luxury yacht?

The type of amenities you can expect on a luxury yacht will depend on the size of the vessel, with larger yachts able to accommodate a larger number of amenities. Moran Yacht & Ship has access to a superb selection of Monaco motor yachts for charter, including the world’s largest vessels. Some of the amenities you can expect to find on our Monaco yachts for rent include hot tubs, swimming pools, dedicated cinema rooms, fully equipped gyms, spa facilities, water toys and tenders, helipads, beach clubs, and luxurious salons and staterooms. All our yachts are fully crewed, ensuring spectacular service levels that rival the world’s best hotels. Your yacht’s crew will go out of their way to ensure you enjoy unforgettable moments on the water. They will also boast intimate knowledge of Monaco and the French Riviera. If you are sold on a Monaco yacht charter, contact a luxury charter broker at Moran.

How many guests can I take?

Most yachts for charter can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests while cruising. However, there are some charter vessels that are able to accommodate a larger number of guests. A luxury charter brokerage, like Moran Yacht & Ship, can secure a vessel based on your precise needs. Contact our team today.

What availability is there for Monaco yacht charters?

While there is a superb selection of yachts for charter in Monaco, the best vessels are in high demand. We suggest booking a Monaco yacht charter as far in advance as possible, especially around key events such as the Monaco Grand Prix. However, last-minute bookings are available. Contact our team if you want to reserve a luxury Monaco yacht for charter.

Can I rent a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix?

Absolutely! A yacht charter for the Monaco Grand Prix is the best way to enjoy this world-class event. The yachts that are moored in a prime position in Port Hercules benefit from superb views of the racetrack.

What other events can I attend in Monaco?

Monaco offers a superb roster of prestigious events. These include:

  • The Rose Ball, held annually by the Societe des Bains de Mer. This high-profile event is usually held every March and attracts VIPs, celebrities, and royalty.
  • The Rolex Masters Monte Carlo tennis tournament, held every April at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, just moments from Monaco’s border.
  • The Monaco Yacht Show, held every September in Port Hercule, and a highlight on the annual yachting calendar.
  • The Red Cross Gala, one of the world’s largest charity galas. This glittering event is usually held every October.

A Monaco yacht charter is ideal for also enjoying some of the most refined events along the French Riviera. These include the Cannes Film Festival, held every May, and the Cannes Yachting Festival, held every September.

If you would like to charter a yacht in Monaco for any of the above events, contact the Moran team today. Our charter brokers will be delighted to assist you, including helping you to select your perfect motor yacht and arranging a tailored itinerary in this luxury destination.

What ports can I berth at in Monaco?

Monaco boasts several ports that you can berth in:

Port Hercules

Port Hercules is, without question, one of the world’s most iconic and glamorous ports. This natural, deep-water port is just moments away from Monte-Carlo, home to Monaco’s most extravagant amenities. With depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters, Port Hercules can accommodate the world’s largest mega yachts. The port provides a wide range of yachting facilities, as well as the superb Monaco Yacht Club, designed by the world-renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster.

Port of Fontvieille

This well-protected harbor is a smaller port than Port Hercules and is located in the district of Fontvieille, a vibrant residential and commercial area that borders France. Berths in this marina are all reserved in advance, and it does not accept transiting vessels.

Port of Cala del Forte

The Port of Cala del Forte is Monaco’s newest marina; however, it’s actually located just over the border in Ventimiglia, Italy. The port boasts world-class facilities, with a waterfront with luxury shops, restaurants, and a shipyard. Regular high-speed shuttles run daily between the Port of Cala del Forte and Port Hercules and are reserved strictly for guests of this Monaco marina.

How many crew members will my luxury yacht charter have?

The number of crew members will depend on the size of the vessel. At a minimum, you can expect at least three crew members, including a captain, deckhand, and stewardess, with the largest Monaco yachts for charter boasting a crew in excess of 20 plus, including dive masters and trained watersports operators, sommeliers, spa therapists, personal trainers, and a dedicated culinary team.

What currency should I take to Monaco?

Even though Monaco is not a member of the European Union, it has adopted the Euro as its official currency.

Can I visit France while on a luxury Monaco yacht charter?

Absolutely, a Monaco yacht charter is the ideal opportunity to cruise the stunning French Riviera and drop anchor at some of the Mediterranean’s most stylish ports of call. Popular spots include St. Tropez, Cannes, and the Cote d’Azur’s legendary Caps. Which airport will I fly into to board my private yacht charter?

Most charter guests will fly into the Nice Cote d’Azur Airport, an international airport in Nice, France. Multiple international commercial airlines fly into Nice Airport, which also boasts private jet facilities. The most seamless way to transfer from Nice Airport to Monaco is by helicopter. The helicopter can either land at the Fontvieille helipad or directly on your charter yacht if it has a helipad or touch-and-go facilities. If you want to enjoy a luxury yacht rental in Monaco, Moran Yacht & Ship can help. We can also assist with arranging transportation to and from your yacht. Contact our team today.

Monaco itinerary

Start your Monaco yacht charter in Portofino. Originally a small fishing village shaded by eucalyptus and olive trees, it's become a sunny and relaxing paradise on the Ligurian Riviera. Start your superyacht charter to Monaco here, where you can enjoy the exquisite swimming cove at Paraggi or the summit of Monte Portofino. Drinks at the famous Hotel Splendido overlooking the harbour are a must.

Porto Cervo

Following an overnight crossing, you’ll wake up in the capital of the exclusive Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo. The breathtaking views, crystal-clear water, golf, tennis, great food and night-life are the main attractions of this Meditteranean gem. Blessed with many beautiful sandy beaches, relax and enjoy playing with water toys in the magnificent waters of Porto Cervo. Cruise to Liscia di Vacca for a late lunch or for some tranquillity and relaxation time. This beautiful bay boasts clear turquoise water and is situated between the harbours Porto Cervo and Pevero. When the sun goes, head to Cervo’s lively marina for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Cala di Volpe

Arrive in the morning after a short cruise in Cala di Volpe, a beautiful wide bay fringed with sandy beaches and clear waters that’s perfect for snorkelling and watersports. Spend the day anchored off the bay of Cala di Volpe which is well protected from the wind, Its crowning feature is the spectacular five-star Hotel Cala di Volpe at the end of the bay. This hotel is overlooked by the Pevero Golf Course and on the other side are the fabulous villas of La Celvia.

La Maddalena

Start the day with breakfast on-board before enjoying the water toys in La Maddalena Archipelago. When you’re tired, it’s time to relax between Caprera and Maddalene, nicknamed ‘swimming pool bay’ thanks to its crystal clear waters. Stopover at the marine reserve of Lavezzi, known to divers as ‘Meruville’ due to its impressive tally of resident Meru (or grouper) fish. The reef comprises a series of rocky pinnacles coated in yellow cup coral, ideal for snorkelling. Spend the night anchored between Caprera and Maddalena.

You’ll arrive at St Tropez in time for breakfast. This modern version of a medieval town is popular for the line of stylish yachts along the quay and quaint terrace cafes. The small picturesque streets are perhaps more famous for the multitude of boutiques and restaurants than for any historical significance. Relax and enjoy watersports and swimming in the lovely blue waters of the Bay of St Tropez before cruising to St Tropez Port late afternoon ahead of sunset.

In the morning you'll have a leisurely breakfast whilst cruising to Monaco. Spend the afternoon enjoying watersports, swimming and soaking up the sun. Shop at the famous Cercle d’Or, check out the alleys of the old town or browse the galleries of the Métropole shopping centre and the Allées Lumières. For a night out on the town, the Casino and Hotel de Paris are all synonymous with Monaco. Go for drinks at the hotel’s famous American Bar, or try Louis XV by Alain Ducasse. You could dine at Cipriani to experience its luxury nautical theme and Mediterranean menu, or try La Trattoria by Alain Ducasse and its Tuscan-inspired Italian cuisine.

Your Monaco superyacht charter finishes at 12 noon. Depart and spend the rest of your day enjoying all that the Principality has to offer.

Superyachting in Monaco: Some Tips

Monaco immediately springs to mind when you think about luxury superyachts. It’s a destination in the heart of the French Riviera with the striking cities of Cannes and Nice close by. Monaco’s harbour is home to some of the most beautiful yachts in the world, especially during the summer months when the rich and famous flock to the region to enjoy a summer of spectacular events.

Noted mostly for its famous Formula 1 Grand Prix race which takes place in May each year, Monaco is also a superyacht hotspot and luxury yacht charter groups arrive in Port Hercules marina to the glitter of city lights. With its twisting streets, amazing restaurants, fabulous shopping opportunities and party atmosphere, Monaco should definitely be put on your yacht charter bucket list.

Port Hercules is well sought after as a place to berth, especially throughout the more popular months of the year. There are plenty of facilities here such as electricity, fuel and fresh water. What’s more there are also 30 berths for superyachts of 25m-30m and 20 berths for 30m yachts and over.

Whether you’re on a yacht charter vacation or visiting, the principality of Monaco is the place to see and be seen. The Monaco yachting season finishes in September with the Monaco Yacht Show, a prestigious event showcasing the latest superyacht concepts and launches – an opportunity not to be missed.

The best time to visit Monaco on a luxury yacht is from May to September. July and August are very busy months packed with local events at the height of the summer weather, while May and September play host to the motor race of the year as well as the yacht show. Both of these highlights attract thousands of people, so reserve a superyacht sooner rather than later so you don’t miss out on the delights of Monaco.

It’s worth leaving your yacht to taste the fine dining in some of Monaco’s best restaurants, such as the Louis XV restaurant at the Hotel de Paris. This is one of the grandest restaurants in Monaco which has been awarded three Michelin stars.

A less formal restaurant can be found at the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel, where guests can savour mouth-watering sea food while absorbing the spectacular views. As an alternative venue, Le Vistamar at the Hermitage Hotel overlooks the harbour for anther stunning view while dining alfresco from the gorgeous terrace.

For shopaholics, there are no shortages of shopping opportunities here. With its glamour and wealth, Monaco has the major fashion labels and high-end luxury goods. In the Metropole and Fontvieille shopping centres, there’s a huge variety of stores to choose from to shop till you drop. Jewellery shops stock famous brands like Bulgari, Piaget, Van Cleef and Cartier, so head for the Place du Casino for a day of indulgence.

When it comes to partying, Monaco just can’t be beaten. It’s a top Mediterranean destination for party lovers with most of the action taking place on the yachts anchored in Port Hercules. Over the Grand Prix weekend, Jimmy’z nightclub is a wonderful place where many of the rich and famous head to.

With so many places in Monaco to see, make sure to arrange your itinerary to take in Monte Carlo Casino and the Opera House. The Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum are two other popular attractions. Fort Antoine is an early XVIII century fortress which is now used as an outdoor theatre. Seating up to 350 people it’s a sight out of the ordinary. The Jardin Exotique is another destination worth visiting:, set on a steep cliff with lush, green gardens and a backdrop of the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea.

What to wear in Monaco largely depends on where you go. While swimwear is acceptable on board your superyacht or at the beach, once you leave your yacht it’s good etiquette to dress elegantly or smart-casual. One of the most exciting things in Monaco is to see how people dress when out socialising. It’s often like a fashion parade wherever you go, so put your best clothes on and join the party.

The traffic can be very congested during the hot, summer months so be prepared for traffic: If you were considering driving, getting around in Monaco is easier by taxi. Lots of people use Monaco’s heliports plus there’s a useful shuttle service between Nice Airport and Monaco itself.

Monaco is an important part of any French Riviera, yacht charter vacation on either a sailing or power boat. Despite the trend toward materialism, this tiny principality is steeped in history and natural beauty. Explore the old medieval town home to the Prince's Palace and the Oceanographic Museum; stroll through the exotic botanical gardens; take a swim in the heated saltwater pools or do a workout in the sport complex attached to the yachting harbour. Everything you need is in close proximity to where the charter yachts are moored as the principality is merely one square mile in total size.

Indulge in a bowl of the famous Soup de Poisson, at one of the lovely wharf side restaurants. Better still, step aboard your charter yacht and enjoy a glass of crisp, cold French Chablis, as you watch the glamorous world go by. From Monaco, head west along the French Riviera toward Villefranche or St Jean Cap Ferrat , followed by Nice , Antibes , Cannes , St Tropez and then on to the Iles d'Hyeres where you'll find some quaint and scenic anchorages, small villages, and authentic French restaurants. Believe it or not, they do still exist! Monaco is also a great northern point to begin a yacht charter vacation down the spectacular Italian Riviera .

ClubSwan Reception - Yacht Club de Monaco

Another event of interest in Monaco is the Monaco Yacht Show which is held annually in September at Port Hercules. The show brings together professionals from the international luxury yachting sector including luxury yacht builders, brokers, designers, equipment suppliers, and service providers to show off the latest and greatest luxury yachts for sale in Monaco. The Show is the only one worldwide which is exclusively devoted to superyachts for sale and is the largest floating luxury yacht display in Europe of super and mega yachts.

As one of the most famous yacht charter grounds in the Mediterranean, Monaco and the French Riviera have all types of yacht charter available including motor, sailing, crewed yachts, catamaran, luxury yachts and of-course the ever increasing super yacht charter. The emphasis in Monaco is on larger private luxury yacht charters.

Monaco

The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have the lightest winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

Monaco Yacht Charter Enquiry

The cruise was fantastic and the "Impulse" is a truly comfortable and luxurious yacht and we all enjoyed our team there very much. Everything was perfectly prepared when we arrived and the crew was amazing --- Jolande is a fantastic and creative chef who created the most delicious food always wonderfully presented (I very much enjoyed joining her early morning in St. Tropez on her shopping tour to the fish market and other lovely butchers, bakeries and cheese shop where we found the most delicious ingredients for her magical cooking), Bernadette took care of us in the most friendly and attentive way and last but not least Tim, a very helpful and insightful skipper who showed us the most beautiful places. The "Impulse" is a wonderful yacht but the crew made us feel right away at "home" amongst friends. To make a long story short, the cruise was a wonderful and most enjoyable experience and I'm sure it was not the last time I spend time on the "Impulse". Where can I berth my yacht in Monaco?

Monaco is home to several world-class marinas, including Port Hercules, Port Fontvieille, Mareterra, and Cala del Forte.

Port Hercules

Port Hercules is a natural deep water port at the foot of Monaco’s legendary ancestral rock. The port boasts 760 berths, including 30 visitor berths, along with a host of services, including two private careening areas and two shipyards. The marina is flanked by multiple bars and restaurants, while the exclusive offerings of Monte-Carlo are just a short walk away. Adjacent to Port Hercules is the Yacht Club de Monaco, designed by Lord Foster, which offers a selection of refined amenities, including a gym, restaurant, library, and meeting spaces.

The marina boasts a wide range of facilities, including a shipyard, fuel station, charging points, a selection of shops and restaurants, and mooring assistance. At the Yacht Club de Monaco it is time for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge

Yacht Club de Monaco

TURIN, Italy, June 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Future of engineering focused on sustainable yachting. Everything's ready for the 11th edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge taking place from 1st to 6th July. Organising the competition is the Yacht Club de Monaco, led by its President HSH Prince Albert II: the key objective being to demonstrate the efficiency of alternative propulsion and hull design innovations. "Seeing how committed the new generation is shows how important it is to find answers to environmental issues," says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. The aim is put on a zero-emission event in terms of on-water mobility with over 50 boats attending. More than 700 students from 40-plus universities around the world (25 nations) have been working on their projects all year to earn their place and present them in the Principality. The Village showcases all the boats that are either on or about to enter the market, as well as prototypes, and is open to the public.

In the Energy Class, a category developed by YCM, contestants can for the first time add foils to their prototypes, like the British from Cambridge University Riviera Racing with their hydrogen-powered foiling catamaran. Among the 18 teams in this class, the French from Tameo Ensta/Monaco Marine from Ensta Paris will also be serious contenders with their three-engine project inspired by differential propulsion, a first for the Energy Class. In the Solar Class, 13 teams are in the line-up including the Spanish on Clean Energy Ship Uvigo from the Universidade de Vigo presenting a rather unique hull design with lines similar to a catamaran and impressive speed potential. It aims to be very stable when racing before deploying the foils to generate lift and fly over the water. Finally, in the Open Sea class for boats already on or about to enter the market, several units will be showing what they can do. The 15 registered teams include Deep Silence from Sialia Yachts, one of the largest full electric propulsion boats available on the market; and two hydrogen-powered boats, Madblue marine P-01 and Inocel-Poséidon, which will be supplied with hydrogen on 5th July by Natpower. The new electric, highperformance day boat, the Tridente, developed in ollaboration with marine technology company Vita, who are long-term supporters of the event, will also be present.

Supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, UBS, BMW and SBM Offshore, the event has attracted the attention and support of well-known names in the industry like Monaco Marine, Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Azimut/Benetti Group, Sanlorenzo and Lürssen, all keen to play a part in the yachting transformation. So for these young competitors there are opportunities to make contact with the industry by applying for job offers and internships via the Job Forum. At the last edition this facility led to over 80 interviews. There is also investment in time made by the professionals through the Corporate Mentoring Programme which provides bespoke support year-round by facilitating exchanges between the industry and universities.

This year for the first time, YCM is partnering with IEMA (International Electric Marine Association) by helping it organise its first Annual Meeting at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The event is multi-facetted, particularly on the water with a range of motorboating challenges such as the manoeuvrability tests, sea trials, speed record and the YCM E-Boat Rally. While innovative solutions are being tested on the water, students are also given a voice at the daily Tech Talks to exchange knowledge and experiences with fellow contestants in open source. As the focus is on progressing alternative propulsion, professionals get a chance to have their say at two half-day conferences: the first (Thursday 4th July) is on alternative fuels and cutting-edge technologies in the yachting field, while the second is the annual Hydrogen Round Table (5th edition this year) organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Monaco Energy Transition and YCM, which will address hydrogen innovation in the maritime and yachting industry.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is launching the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award, the prize being a grant of €25,000 for best technological solution in terms of energy efficiency and/or carbon reduction. The winner will be announced on 6th July and will be able to present progress on their project at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge for three years starting 2025.

Yachting: SEA Index® introduced in 15 Côte d’Azur ports

yacht-club-monaco-sea-index

Around ten new ports have confirmed their intention to apply the SEA Index® to their infrastructures. Good news for the Monaco Yacht Club (YCM).

The SEA Index® now extends beyond Monaco! Launched in 2020 by the Monaco Yacht Club and recently awarded the Capenergies label, the scheme has been introduced in 15 ports on the Côte d’Azur, between Menton, Saint-Topez and Bonifacio. Like Monaco, they have committed to the region’s ecological transition.

“This collaboration is recognition of the work accomplished by the SEA Index® since its creation. Our ambition is to bring on board the ports and marinas along the entire Mediterranean coastline and well beyond, creating a genuine network of committed maritime areas,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Monaco Yacht Club.

Eco-responsible superyacht honoured by Monaco Yacht Club

An energy consumption calculator

Applying a technical formula that calculates the energy intensity ratio based on data including the maximum power of the engines and generators installed, as well as gross tonnage and power, the SEA Index® tool can be used to estimate the CO2 emissions of recreational vessels over 25 metres.

Superyachts aren’t just for the super-rich: Hundreds of scientists have used them for ocean research

superyacht moored at marina

For almost two years, Robert Brewin collected data from the bow of a superyacht as it sailed pristine waters from the Caribbean Sea to the Antarctic Ocean.

The  Archimedes , a 222-foot (68-meter) “adventure” yacht then owned by the late hedge funder James Simons, boasts a gym, a jacuzzi and an elevator. But between 2018 and 2020, Brewin was concerned only with the boat’s Sea-Bird Scientific Solar Tracking Aiming System, installed to measure light reflecting off of the water. A senior lecturer at the UK’s University of Exeter, Brewin and his colleagues were analyzing microplankton — microscopic organisms at the base of the marine food chain — by studying the ocean’s color. The Sea-Bird’s readouts helped them verify satellite imagery.

Brewin’s was not your typical superyacht itinerary, but he is one of hundreds of scientists to have used an adventure yacht — also known as expedition or explorer yachts — to conduct research on the ocean. In a  paper  published in January, Brewin and his co-authors touted the potential of “harnessing superyachts” for science, concluding that “reaching out to wealthy citizen scientists may help fill [research capability] gaps.”

It’s a view shared — and being pushed — by the Yacht Club of Monaco and the Explorers Club, a New York City-based organization focused on exploration and science (of which, full disclosure, I am a member). In March, the groups co-hosted an environmental symposium that included an  awards ceremony  for yacht owners who “stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment.” The  Archimedes  won a “Science & Discovery” award.

“If a yacht is operating 365 days a year, rather than having it sit idle it’d be much better for it to contribute a positive return through science and conservation,” says Rob McCallum, an Explorers Club fellow and founder of US-based EYOS Expeditions, which runs adventure yacht voyages.

EYOS charters yachts from private owners for its excursions, and is a founding member of Yachts for Science, a four-year-old organization that matches privately owned yachts with scientists who need time at sea. (Other members include yacht builder Arksen, media firm BOAT International, and nonprofits Nekton Foundation and Ocean Family Foundation.) Yachts for Science will enable about $1 million worth of donated yacht time this year, McCallum says, a figure he expects to hit $15 million by 2029.

“There’s a personal satisfaction that we are contributing to something that is bigger than us,” says Tom Peterson, who co-owns an insurance underwriting company in California and has what he jokingly refers to as a “mini superyacht.” Every year for the past decade, Peterson has donated about 15 to 20 days of time and fuel on the 24-meter  Valkyrie  to scientists, who he takes out himself as a licensed captain and former scuba dive operator. He often works with the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, and allows researchers to stay aboard for days at a time instead of having to constantly make the 1.5-hour trip to and from shore.

To link up with scientists, Peterson works with the International SeaKeepers Society, a Florida-based nonprofit that engages the yachting community to support ocean conservation and research. “The more we understand things about the ocean in general, the better we all are in the long run,” he says.

When “superyacht” and “the environment” appear in the same sentence, it’s usually in a different context. In 2019,  one study estimated  that a single 71-meter superyacht has the same annual carbon footprint as about 200 cars. In 2021, another  paper  found that superyachts were the single greatest contributor to the carbon footprint of 20 of the world’s most prominent billionaires, accounting for 64% of their combined emissions.

“If you really want to respect the environment, you can just go surf,” says Grégory Salle, a senior researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research and author of the book  Superyachts: Luxury, Tranquility and Ecocide . Salle is open to the idea that superyachts could be used to advance scientific research, but says it’s contradictory for anyone to buy a superyacht and claim to be truly concerned about the environment.

McCallum says people who own adventure yachts tend to be younger than your standard superyacht owner, and have a particular interest in remote and pristine places. “They’re not the sort of people that are content to just hang out in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean,” he says. “Antarctica, the Arctic, the remote Indian Ocean, the remote Pacific Ocean, the Subantarctic islands… that’s where you’re going to find us delivering our services.”

Explorer yachts aren’t the only way scientists can reach those destinations, but demand for dedicated research vessels does outstrip available supply. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), arguably the world’s greatest collector of oceanographic data, has a fleet of  15 research and survey vessels  for the use of its scientists. Academic researchers can also apply to use the fleet, often at a subsidized rate. But scientists request roughly 15,000 to 20,000 days of boat time every year. In 2019, NOAA was able to fill just 2,300 of them, according to an internal study.

That gap is particularly problematic as the planet warms. Oceans provide services that scientists call “ existentially important ,” producing more than  half of the oxygen we breathe  and serving as the world’s  largest carbon sink . They also absorb  30% of our carbon emissions  and  90% of the excess heat generated by them .

G. Mark Miller, a retired NOAA Corps officer who was in charge of several of the agency’s research vessels, has a different solution in mind when it comes to bolstering ocean research: smaller boats, fit for purpose. Superyachts can cost north of $500 million, he says; “why don’t we build a hundred $5 million vessels and flood the ocean science community?”

After leaving NOAA, Miller in 2021 launched Virginia-based Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore with a vision of building a global fleet of research vessels and offering their use at affordable prices. He says hiring a NOAA boat can cost scientists between $20,000 and $100,000 per day. GMSO plans to charge less than $10,000 a day for most missions. The company says it’s close to acquiring its first three vessels.

Miller hopes his business model will help scientists conduct the work they need to — particularly in under-served regions like the Asia-Pacific — without worrying about getting a luxury yacht covered in “muddy worms, plankton goo, dead fish [and] whale snot.” He describes yacht owners donating boat time to scientists as “better than nothing,” and says it can help get regular people interested in science and exploration.

Christopher Walsh, captain of the  Archimedes , says he and his crew love taking part in science initiatives, especially when there’s an educational component. “I get a real thrill when we can stream to the classrooms — you can’t imagine the enthusiasm the kids display,” Walsh says. “That gives me a lot of hope for the future.”
